I just got back from spending a week in tokyo.. and it was pretty weird.
In addition to having no trash cans, I was quite surprised..
While in Shinjuku, I recognized certain areas as being in Izumi's 'Shinjuku Massacre'. I was walking around, and I was like, oh hey, heres that spot the lady got her head shot... and heres where that guy's brains went flying..
Pretty crazy how accurate and high quality the art in Gantz is. Thats what happens when you go by photographs and computer models I guess.
Well the way they do backgrounds in Gantz is quite unique , Hiroya's assistants actually takes pictures of areas and model it into a drawing like form. Which makes them pretty realistic.
Hope you enjoy the trip!
Man im gelous. But it shows you how much Oku wants to make this series great, and how he doesnt want to make any mistakes and make as great as possible.
yeah, definitely high quality production.
oh yeah, and allow me to brag for a bit: round trip tickets from LA to Tokyo were $684 total, including taxes, gas, and a $100 discount on Korean Air. I went with the travel company H.I.S., and they hooked me up.. so if you are really looking into a trip to japan, you can spend a week there for like $2000 total. Or less if you sleep in capsule hotels and mcdonalds like I did. (oh yeah, 7/11's rock-- they were the only place my american credit card was accepted lol).
It was exceptionally cheap because I came in on a thursday right as Cherry Blossom season was ending, and right before Golden Week.
Oh yeah, and here are some of the pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/25528257@N03/
this picture here:
was taken from the bridge thats in the backround when Izumi first starts shooting people, facing the opposite direction. I totally forgot to take a picture of the stuff that was in the manga!! hahaha
Cool man thanks!
oh yeah, and definitely buy the 'making out in japanese' book, even if you already know some japanese. its full of useful phrases for getting around, being polite, meeting girls, getting out of fights, getting into fights, and everything else. It doesn't have everything, but it has a LOT of useful japanese!!
Lol. Actually, it's fairly common for most mangaka (who don't do crazy fantasy stuff) to go out and do research and incorporate common areas around japan in their work; you usually see it happen most often in the romance/school life settings than anything. And it's definitely going to happen if the story is set in japan; I know for a fact that mostly every racing spot in Initial D is a real road in its prefecture in Japan.
That also happens in the manga. Remember when Tae goes out to take some photos to use as a reference for her manga.
Try going to Osaka next time. I'm sure you'll find a lot of familiar places.
