Plenty of fantasy series are successful, but they don't explode the way it has. It seems like fantasy readers support the good stuff, but it doesn't expand any further than that. But occasionally you have something like ASoIaF that's everywhere. And then all the TV execs will be looking for something like it to adapt.
I havent noticed a lot of tolkien similarities but I didnt read it much. Some stuff naturally occurs as lotr is a seminal work in the genre and its really hard to get away from in even the simplest ways (unless your China Mieville). That annoys a lot of writers in the genre. If you have some time read this essay, the Epic Pooh, its a brilliant fuck you to Tolkien & CS Lewis by Michael Moorcock and has easily one of my favourite quotes:

    Spoiler show

Yea it depends on the exposure in bigger mediums but ASOIAF is everywhere because of the tv show. Not the other way around. It was big in the fantasy world before but this level of exposure it now has is a direct result of that show. There are a lot of works that are at the pre-hbo level fame that ASOIAF had, with some series even bigger (Wheel of time, The Dark Tower, Sword of Truth, Dragonlance, Riftwar). A lot of the time the switch to a bigger medium doesnt pay off though.

Re: Don't waste your life on the stepping stones

I meant it only in generalities. The length he goes to create a world that's quite unique with an extensive mythos all it's own. The use of certain imagery. Similar creatures, there's even direct homages paid to Tolkien in the naming of some characters and places. You can say many authors can go and create a world, but it's not as easy to make THAT interesting. It takes a lot of talent. I think Tolkien himself can even be cumbersome in that department.

Now, creating a setting is basic storytelling, but in works of speculative fiction, there's so much more to flesh out. And by doing that, there's just so much more meat there potentially.

I wasn't trying to say the series was this big without the show, don't get me wrong. You need a really great team and situation to adapt something worth watching. I think his history with actually writing TV shows helps him there. That doesn't mean he wrote or writes the books with that in mind, but there's something to it. They even let him write the teleplay of an episode every season. If GRRM didn't have that sort of thought and care for his stuff, he would have sold it off and put it on network TV. There's a ton of examples of authors selling their material off for the money. Who could blame them? But when they don't know the business, they're fucked.

But I guess there's always a reason why something is never adapted. Be it no one finds it worthy enough, or a JD Salinger kind of situation. That goes for any genre.

Re: Don't waste your life on the stepping stones

I started last Saturday - was supposed to on this Monday but they called me earlier to fill in for someone. Pay week was this week so they gave me a check for one day since I worked on Saturday last week. Which is super awesome since Im in need of it. ^^

Same line of work - I had hoped that the city job I applied for would have called sooner but they've only processed the application.
If they call - I might switch over to that. I also heard of an other opening for housekeeping for a nursing home / hospital facility. I might look into that as well.

It's actually pretty interesting / refreshing working in a new company and everything being new.
I was really not motivated or happy with the old one.

    Good luck -

I suppose something that pays around the same will be difficult or does that not factor in to the choice of a new or other job selection?
Can you not also go back to school and get a whatever that's need to be a full-time teacher than a sub? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the requirements. I think you mentioned working with the special kids.

Also - goodnight, I'm outta here.

Re: Don't waste your life on the stepping stones

I already got my teaching license. In order to sub as a teacher in several school districts over here, it is required to have a teaching degree; otherwise you can only sub as an aide or a paraprofessional. I think they changed the policy b/c a lot of people applied to be subs after the economy went bust. Unfortunately, I dunno if I could use my special education major for another job outside of teaching. >.>

    Good night

Have you ever considered the medical field.
Just yesterday, I ran into a mate of mine while doing an ER run and he was working as an ER Tech at a local hospital here.

Not that you have to pick that line of work per - se but perhaps something in the related field?

Yeah, I'm considering something like that. They have a pharmacy technician program at the local CC that I'm interested in.
