    Kaiten's Anime Recommendations

Check here to read about anime I like.

    Pyscho-Pass
    Genre: Cyberpunk
    Studio: Production I.G
    Director: Shitani Naoyoshi
    Series Composition: Urobuchi Gen
Original Character Design: Amano Akira (Mangaka of Katekyo Hitman Reborn)
    Aired: October 2012 - April 2013

A dark, dystopian police thriller, Psycho-Pass mixes science fiction, mystery, film noir, and police drama. Fans of cyberpunk will love this series, one of the better recent examples of the genre. Written by Fate/Zero creator and Madoka Magica writer Urobuchi Gen, with original character design by Katekyo Hitman Reborn mangaka Amano Akira. Contains graphic violence.

    A Letter to Momo
    Genre: Fairy Tale
    Studio: Production I.G
    Director and Script: Okiura Hiroyuki

    Spoiler: summary show

A Ghibli-esque fairy tail, A Letter to Momo is a beautiful story about letting go, and moving on without ever forgetting. Touching, and often funny, Momo is a must see classic anime. Very much an under appreciated movie online, A Letter to Momo has been nominated for multiple awards in Japan.

    Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
    Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
    Studio: ARMS
    Director: Takahashi Takeo
    Series Composition: Arakawa Narihisa
Based on the Novels By: Touno Mamare

    Spoiler: Summary show

An unexpectedly original anime, Maou Yuusha turns action tropes inside out. Rather than action and combat, the focus is on the politics and economy of a fantasy world. The Demon King and Hero seek an end to the political and economic source of the war, and to build a society ready for peace. A very similar series to Spice and Wolf, also directed by Takahashi Takeo. The cast is spectacular, practically a voice actor all star team - featuring Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch, Code Geass), Koshimizu Ami (Holo, Spice and Wolf), Sawashiro Miyuki (Kanbaru, Monogatari Series), Saito Chiwa (Senjougahara, Monogatari Series), Tomatsu Haruka (Anaru, AnoHana), and Kamiya Hiroshi (Koyomi, Monogatari Series). The only fault I can find with Maou Yuusha is the animation. The backgrounds are excellent, but there are too many talking head scenes, and character design could have been more detailed.

ef ~ a tale of memories. & ef ~ a tale of melodies.
    Genre: Romance, Tragedy
    Studio: SHAFT
    Director: Oonuma Shin
    Series Composition: Takayama Katsuhiko
    Aired: October 6, 2007 - December 23, 2007; October 6, 2008 - December 23, 2008

    Spoiler: Summary show

A two part anime adapting the visual novels Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two, and Ef: The Latter Tale. The ef~ franchise are bittersweet love stories, focused on love, loss, and longing. The character design might be a little off putting, antiquated bishoujo art that has since gone out of style. The animation though is pure SHAFT, fans of Madako Magica and the Monogatari series will instantly recognize the studio's touch. 5CM Per Second director Shinkai Makoto helped storyboard the series. His touch is almost instantly recognizable. Ef thematically is very similar to his movies. Recommended for fans of Shinkai, Key Studio (Air, Kanon, Clannad, Little Busters), and SHAFT.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (Oregairu)
    Genre: School Life, Comedy, Drama
    Studio: Brain's Base
    Director: Yoshimura Ai
    Series Composition: Suga Shoutarou
Starring: Eguchi Takuya, Touyama Nao, Hayami Saori
    Airing: April 5, 2013 - June 28, 2013

    Spoiler: Summary show

A funny, sarcastic, somewhat bitter story about two jaded, cynical high school students. Yukino and Hikigaya are two loners, who like it that way, forced to take baby steps towards being slightly more social. Neither really want to change, both are forced, neither really take to it well. Part of the fun of Oregairu is the halting, fitful, incomplete, slow, and unwilling nature of Hikigaya and Yukino's character development. They change, but only slowly, without losing their wonderfully sarcastic humor. All of the characters, even the supporting cast, are fun, and a little more interesting than they at first will seem.
