If they attacked innocent people I'd just shank 'em.
Not really, that's up to the choice of every pirates. If I was the captain, I'd make sure they wouldn't attack innocent people, much like Luffy.
But then you'd almost CERTAINLY have a small crew just like Strawhats. Since there really aren't many pirates in this One Piece world who carry themselves like this way.
And with a small crew I strongly doubt that many small crews will survive situations like entering Thriller Bark lol.
Or having convenient family connections to a Vice-Admiral who has constantly been offered Admiral position so that when you bump into an Admiral you don't get killed or captured lol.
It's a big world out there though, you never know. I find it better to have a close-knit small crew than a large, cold crew. I'd be a pirate mainly for fun and for adventure.
Aren't you missing a few choice there?
I'm so chicken, that I would probably end up being something really boring, like a farmer or a fisherman.
Maybe a journalist.
But, IF I was adventurous, then I would definitely either become a Pirate or a Revolutionary.
EDIT: I just noticed that you gave us strength and powers in the first post, so I guess I wouldn't be a farmer/fisherman then!

If I'm aware of the whole world situation, then I would say Revolutionary. Unless I meet Luffy. The I'll BEG to be in his ship. If He doesn't allow me to join, then I'll follow them all over the world.
I'd be an explorer so I can have all the adventure without the baggage of Marines chasing me around. It will be fun to come across on an uncharted territory.
If a cool guy like Luffy offers me a chance to be a member of his crew, I'd say yes and will become a pirate. (None of the Strawhats started out as pirates save for Brook.)
Considering Luffy was a Rookie in Sabaody, it means Garp revealed to all the Marines the connection between Himself, Dragon and Luffy in Luffy's Rookie year.
So I guess everybody would know quite soon.

For those who feel Marines mean no freedom, that isn't entirely true.
Look at Captain Hina, Captain Coby, Vice-Admiral Smoker, all people who can be seen adventuring pretty much. THere are others I can mention.
As I said, if you enter the story at a decent strength level, so we're talking at at least Ensign strength level.
So thats the level we first see Tashigi at. Which isn't too much.
At that level she was on a ship touring the land.

The idea of freedom is my main reason for my vote.
From the chioces above only pirates, bandits and explorers have lots of individual freedom, all the others are somehow bound to a cause.
Anyhow you forgot to include the "bounty hunter"

Or Whitebeard, who lived well into his 70s/80s or something? Or Rayleigh, who's older than Aokiji?
Let's also remember that Ace died trying to save Luffy after getting pissed at Akainu insulting Whitebeard. Had Ace continued to run, he'd have likely lived. Is there any pirate that would stop running just because his captain got insulted? Or a pirate who'd sacrifice himself for someone else not even his brother by blood?
Not all pirates die young, and not all Marines make it to old age. Sadly though, we do have at least one instance of a pirate dying in his youth.
So the correlation is rather strong.
And I think there are many instance of Pirates murdering each other, and remember the Pirates that died in front of Nami at Skypiea? etc.
Its hard say which is safer since if a Pirate gets to catch a Marine or kidnap him... I think its safe to say the Marine is dead?
