Re: Favorite New Anime - Spring 2013

I voted for Railgun S, Hataraku Maou-sama, and Oregairu. Railgun S has been brilliant, the Sisters Arc as intense as I had hoped for. More than just a mindless action, director Nagai Tatsuyuki perfectly depicted the emotional stakes of the arc. Hardly surprising, coming from the director of AnoHana. Hataraku was a funny series, with a cast of memorably eccentric characters, and sharp dialog. Oregairu was also a very funny, sarcastic show, with a surprisingly vulnerable side. The three main characters were all unforgettable, and deeper than they first seem. Personal, teenage insecurities were the source of the shows sarcastic sense of humor, many of the characters used humor as a defense mechanism. Working through those insecurities (with varying degrees of success) was the main purpose of the show.

Shingeki no Kyojin was something of a disappointment. Not a bad show, but flawed. I don't understand why so many cost cutting measures were used in such a high profile show. Every episode is loaded with stills, unanimated, motionless scenes. Many scenes have only minimal animation, close up shots with only hair blowing, or staring eyes. Every episode begins with a story recap, shaving a couple of minutes off of each episode.

I wouldn't call Suisei no Gargantia a disappointment, but I did not love it either. The story was great, the pacing great, the animation spectacular. But I found it somehow cold and clinical. I had trouble feeling any sort of connection to the characters or their world.

I enjoyed Red Data Girl more than it seems most of the internet did. It got off to a little bit of a slow start, but developed into a very good story.

Re: Favorite New Anime - Spring 2013

I voted for four Anime as my favorites:

    1. Railgun S - The long awaited sequel does not disappoint, although some may feel the story is getting darker compared to the first season and presence of a particular character is "destroying" the momentum of the cast. Excellent cast, excellent animation, as well as great story line. It reminded me how much I love RailDex universe in general. Misaka Mikoto (and Saten) is just a better protagonist compared to Index.

    2. Oregairu - Was one of the biggest surprise of Spring 2013 for me. The animation wasn't something special, and glancing at the very first time, I wasn't sure I would love this Anime as much as I do now. It's one of those anime where every episode offers some insights, despite being inconsistent, about live in general. It gives us the comedy we love and truth, no matter how small, beneath it. It's just perfect.

    3. Hataraku Maou-sama - Comedy wise, it's just great. It has great cast, and the dialogue between them are well-made, so funny. One complain I might have is towards the end of the season, the ending is kinda lackluster, but I really doubt people would not like Hataraku solely because of its ending.

    4. Yondemasu-yo Azazel-San Z - I'm a huge fan of the first season, and the 2nd season is just as fresh as ever. Racy, dark, adult comedies which are so twisted mixed with good cast, I don't know what happens anymore; I'm too busy laughing.
