    Most moronic laws

Took them a long time Q.Q to repel a penal code that allows rapists to get away unpunished if they marry their victims! http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...r-teen-suicide

That's one of the most moronic laws I have ever heard in my life. Actually, I should compile a top hundred dumbest laws list.

As they say: Big Governments. Small Brains. Dumbest laws.

    All true!

    What do you guys think?

    Re: Most moronic laws

Well, my country's government is on its way to implement a number of laws and regulations meant to boost national production and decrease imports which sounds nice on paper but is the exact same thing that has been done multiple times and almost invariably failed. I know its "almost" however I have little to no reason to think we will be among the few countries that will actually be able to pull this off. Its like removing competition from the market is not an incentive for local producers to make better stuff or things like geographical location or available technology or funds where in direct relationship with quality and price.... Soon enough we will have higher prices and scarcity if things go like they have gone with other countries. Its like they forgot the government tried the exact same thing in the 70s and it also failed miserably.

edit: Oh, I forgot to mention the price controls. Price controls on everything they want to limit imports. Thats bound to make things even better.

In such countries, when a girl is victim of a rape, men don't want to marry such a girl in her later life, so the girl's parents, with sheer stupidity, force their daughter to spend the rest of her life sleeping with a man who raped her. I don't have statistical data but it stands to reason that such marriages seldom have a happy ending unless the girl consensually sleeps with her lover (and pretends to be a rape to avoid being called "immoral") to force her parents to let her marry him. It seems they'll revoke the law which is a welcome development, at least it prevents parents from making stupid decisions on behalf of their daughters.

As for moronic laws, our government is planning to keep track of all online activity of people, there goes right of privacy down the drain.

@kk You're right. Import protection kicks the economy in the butt, through higher prices and restricted consumer choice. Although national firms are protected from competition, there is still the issue of production costs and investments. Not to mention the dark cloud over the country's international relations.

@ Miyagi...I don't even know where to start. Only the morality behind the whole story irks the hell out of me. Not to mention the situation in itself. How on Earth can you call yourself a parent and force your child to marry an abuser (who will never stop abusing his victim). For fudge sake, this law is not punishing the abuser, but the victim. As for the ones not wanting to marry such a girl, screw them! They are also punishing her by silently rejecting and condemning her, even though she's innocent. Such a girl should remain unmarried. It's much better than being maltreated for life.

I agree with you, I just wanted to point out that the parents were as wrong as the law that allowed them to save a rapist. Being single is certainly much better than being married to a man you hate and the parents don't have the right to disregard their daughter's wishes in such a matter. I feel sorry for these girls who got married without their consent.

Parents don't want to lose their image and respect in front of others. For many in Muslim/Hindu culture, the daughter's marriage is important. The idea is that unwed daughter tarnishes the image of the family and implies bad things. It's a screwed up culture and outdated ideals and beliefs, to be honest.

    Re: Most moronic laws

Every culture has its traditions, which is not a bad trait per se, especially because they have contributed to developing a country's national identity. However, when these beliefs take over one's life in such a way that the person steps over basic moral and humanitarian principles without even contemplating about his/her actions, then the whole shabang is screwed up. What on Earth do these people think? Do they use their brains? They behave just like a bunch of stupid sheep, if you'd ask me.

Moving on...what do you guys think about this? I wonder how on Earth will it work out.

So the justice system will basically impose fines on those who do time. It doesn't sound right and I guess it's a great deal of money for most. If they don't do it already, they can provide an opportunity for those who want to work in jail. It can help pay some of their expenses and they can even save some money.

I think it's stupid honestly. That's a fairly steep fine for the average prisoner to pay especially if they are there for years. And isn't jail punishment enough? I'll never understand why some people think pulling someone out of society and locking them isn't punishment enough for people breaking the law (I doubt most have killed anyone...).

    Re: Most moronic laws

I just came across something that made me think of this thread:
    Quote Quote:
During a Lexington luncheon Thursday, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul discussed the possibility of cutting government benefits for unwed mothers who have multiple children, though the potential Republican candidate for president in 2016 didn't directly endorse such a policy.
    http://www.kentucky.com/2014/01/24/3...overnment.html
This is one of the guys from the Republican party currently expected to run for president in 2016. His Tea Party base will eat this up of course, but I doubt many others will...

    That is astronomically moronic

I wonder how the US. Census Bureau calculated the relationship of the families in poverty led by a single mother and that of the families led by a single father/ a couple. Besides, which other factors (if any) were considered when calculating those percentages?

Called me old fashion or even moronic but I do agree with this. To adults, second hand smoking can be seen as a choice. When someone is lighting up a cigarette next to you, you can leave and look for a smoke free place. However, when it comes to children, the situation is slightly different - it becomes compulsory smoking (at least, I see it that way).

The sad part is he probably fully realizes what utter nonsense it is as policy not only to hang everything on marriage, but to target women specifically (how about some accountability for deadbeat parents of either sex?). This is just about shaming single mothers regardless of whether they're trying the best they can (and making the children involved suffer alongside them). I've seen Tea Party types in some websites' comment sections advocating more public "shaming" and blaming the availability of divorce for practically every societal ill you could think of. This plays directly to them.

Hmm. I'm not sure where I stand on this one. I don't want to be around second hand smoke myself, but I'm not sure whether it's right to legislate the insides of people's cars (in ways aside from how it would affect others on the road that is). I do think it's essentially child abuse to have a kid in your car while smoking but not everybody has kids...

The problem with adults bein able to move away is that in some cases, he or she would have to go a bit far to get away from the smoke, and in many cases not possible when he's talking to whoever is smoking. If you're in a casino, it's hard to escape the smell of smoke. Why should we endanger our health just so smokers can get gratification doing something bad for THEIR health?

My city has had a ban on smoking in public places for ages now and I love it, personally. When I moved to Japan for a while, much as I loved it there, it was hard to get used to people smoking even in restaurants, all of a sudden. What that article is about, though, is inside people's cars. I could understand if there was a ban on smoking in cars children will ride in (though difficult to enforce) but this was a blanket ban for all cars as far as I saw, so I'm not sure how I feel about it...
