Whyd they darken the cover so much? Logo looks great.

Visually it has every single problem any work by Horikoshi has, but the superpower stuff kinda fits those design flaws much better than in his previous titles. Cautiously optimistic.

Having not read Bulge in the last <2 years, I take a peek at the first few pages and immediately I recognize the art as very closely resembling Bulge's. Heck, you could take the main character's pose to the right of the second page, colour his hair blue and change his wardrobe, and you'd have Astro. That monster in the background of the cover page, the one with the braids of hair flying in all directions and a disproportionately large, blunt nose pointing upward, looks like he could be the biological father of one of Astro's adopted children (his name is Suntara, if you bought volume 1 of Bulge). On page 16, Izuku Midoriya, the main character, exhibits a horrified facial expression that's almost an exact copy of Astro's face on the lower right corner of chapter 9, page 10, only slightly more intense. Or, take the image on the centre left of chapter 6, page 15, and place it just before the horrified Izuku image, and you'd have a perfect sequence of Astro/Izuku turning their head in horror. And Katsuki Bakugo, that 14-year old with the spiky light-coloured hair, has about the same facial proportions as Tiamat on that same page.

I was really hoping Horikoshi would have evolved in some way, something along the lines of Ashihara evolving from Rilienthal to WT, but as far as the art goes, it looks like a carbon copy of Bulge, down to the exact same details. It's like he plagiarized himself or something. I really don't know if this is going to work out anymore, even if has been six years.

By the way, wasn't there another oneshot sometime in the past few years in which every character was a superhero and it took place in a school setting. I think it was by Hirakata, right? Probably just a coincidence, though.

You and your rapid fire replies. I haven't finished editing my comment yet. >.<

Of course it's not, but along with the story, which most of us can't even judge yet, it's definitely a major component of a manga. Bad art is bad art, and it's not going to contribute to a good first impression, any way you try to put it.

Okay, maybe the art of the manga itself isn't that bad, but it's a disappointment when comparing it to Bulge and finding it not only not evolving in any way, but repeating the exact same style, detail by detail.

Actually, I'm taking the "not evolving" thing back, sort of. Almight, that big superhero in the latter half, does look very detailed in his own, unique way, but I'm still concerned that maybe Horikoshi is putting so much effort into making Almight look so flashy that he ignores improving anything else, kind of like what he just did... that, or maybe the gritty, exposition art is really just part of his art style.

nope, but it is like 80-90% of what a comic is. Without it it'd be dialogue, sound effects and captions, after all. And to expect success from a title the art HAS to have something more going for it. Even gag manga have a certain flair or style that makes them stand out, and there art's far less of a priority.

    -----------------------------------------------

FOAM, I totally didn't think about it but you're onto something, Academia does share a lot of ground with 31 Heroes, setting-wise/weak main character-wise. I wouldn't think too much about it until I've properly had a chance to read it, but it's totally worth noting all the same

What do you some of the design flaws were for Omatagadoki Doubutsuen?

Was an poorly conveyed comic whose plagiaristic elements were its downfall. And without art it wouldn't have existed.

Same as with Barrage. Overcomplicated designs coupled with poor storytelling. Those are just givens with this creator, it seems.

    Overcomplicated?

I like Horikoshi's art style. His art reminds me of Takei's. There's a nice Toriyama and Tezuka influence to his art, a nice throwback to the late 90's - early 2000's, before everything became bishies.

It's a personal choice, but I'm not seeing bad design work for any of the superhero characters in that chapter. I'll have to refresh myself for Doubutsuen and see if it has that problem......
