Shingeki no Kyojin is on its way to becoming #1 in 2014

SnK's Volume 12 alone has FINALLY outsold One Piece's Volume 73, its best one in years.

Combined with the atrocious sells of OP's Volume 74 until now and the probability that Volume 75 wouldn't be any better, it is all up to Isayama to deliver a great Volume 13 to blow the competition out of the water.

    Here are the rankings:

    1. "Attack on Titan" vol.12 limited edition with an anime DVD
    (Hajime Isayama, Kodansha)
    2. "One Piece" vol.73
    (Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha)
    3. "To Love-Ru Darkness" vol.9 pre order-only limited edition with an anime DVD
    (Saki Hasemi/Kentaro Yabuki, Shueisha)
    4. "Silver Spoon" vol.11
    (Hiromu Arakawa, Shogakukan)
    5. "Hyakusho Kizoku" vol. 3
    (Hiromu Arakawa, Shinshokan)
    6. "Otoyome Gatari" vol. 6
    (Kaoru Mori, KADOKAWA/Enterbrain)
    7. "Saint Young Men" vol. 10
    (Hikaru Nakamura, Kodansha)
    8. "Dragon Quest x Yon-koma Manga Gekijyo"
    (Square Enix)
    9. "Black Lagoon" vol. 10 limited edition with an art work book and a bath poster
    (Rei Horie, Shogakukan)
    10. "Jojolion" vol. 6
    (Hirohiko Araki, Shueisha)

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin is on its way to becoming #1 in 2014

I am not surprised at all. I don't read much manga in general because I am very selective about what I want to read, so I know nothing of the other manga in the top 10 list.

However, it seems to me that the general opinion about the so-called 'mainstream' shounen manga is that they all have a hot-blooded hero that always prevails through sheer determination, a cool-headed rival/sidekick who acts with his head and still loses, and a pseudo-action attractive female satellite character who serves only as a love interest for the hero (and sexual object for the male audience).

Attack on Titan is a deconstruction of these characteristics. Eren is hot-blooded and determined, which certainly helps him, but do not make him invincible, Armin is cool-headed, ruthless, and despite his lack of physical strength, he is just as useful as the hero. Mikasa is an actual action girl, she is better than both Eren and Armin combined (Titan form notwithstanding) and she is reasonably attractive, but has realistic bodily features. The other characters are also very interesting.

What I want to say is that, it is obvious that people like this manga, because it is similar, yet different to mainstream manga. Attack on Titan teaches people that life is shit, but despite that, one must not lose hope and must keep on fighting. Mainstream shounen manga teaches people that one can only win if he thinks with his heart. Using your head automatically makes you cold and bitter.

I only know One Piece from that list besides SnK.

They should make more Anime adaptations to get me
started like Attack on Titan did or Gantz, Beserk, Claymore
and probably HunterxHunter too when the Anime ends.
Or maybe the have and I don't know about them because
    there is no hype?

Why not say it in the words of the Anime's first ending
"It's a cruel yet beautiful world"
Which isn't such an uncommon theme considering all
the postapocalyptic series (i'm not only taking about manga here).

You only say that because you keep loosing your Yu-Gi-Oh! duels.

Just noticed the title of this weeks Ninotaku TV (German Anime News) episode:

I would love to see a deserving series like SNK consistently do better than OP, but it's not quite there yet. OP is practically an institution in Japan, from what I've seen anyway. There's been a lively debate of this in the Oricon Weekly Comics Ranking thread btw. (If that link doesn't work, go to the thread, use the quick thread search tool at the top with the terms { snk "One Piece" } and you'll see what I mean.) Also, you may remember the conversation starting from here in the Hangout thread.

As for me, I'm rooting for SNK as a series with decently-rounded characters whose strengths, weaknesses, and personal quirks are more complex and diverse than average.

Yes, there are plenty of good books which explore the whole idea of humanity living in a post-apocalyptic world. That being said, if SNK were to be a book instead of a manga, I think it would still be pretty successful (although not as successful as it is as a manga). In my opinion, an excellent manga is one that would also be considered a good book, if it were turned into one. Besides SNK, the only manga that fulfill this condition (in my opinion, of course) are Death Note and Vinland Saga. The latter has technically a book version.

You have no idea how much I laughed at this one .

Also lets face it, One Piece is currently loitiring way too long on an arc, and introducing a bunch of wierd characters just to have a bunch of wierd characters. Arc Fatigue could well be setting in, whereas SNK is moving the plot along at a decent pace.

What does it mean? It means your about to get your butt kicked!
