Oaky, i've reread the first 9 chapters, and have reached an obvious conclusion.
The series IS a comedy. when it's not going for straight laced jokes with a sense of ironic unfunniness, the series is a parody of so many 80s manga, and is aware of how overpowered toriko is, in a homage to older series taht pulled off the same thing with a straight face.

Re: Toriko by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi
If it's so bad than why do I constantly find myself wanting the next chapter so badly after reading the newest one? T_T
I don't like day to day stuff. I do enjoy Toriko's little mini-arcs. They interest me greatly for some odd reason. And they do seem to be in an older style. Well, I like the old Jump style. It has a slight Fist of the North Star vibe to it, but WAY less serious.
well you're less cynical than me and prepared to love a series without that sort of niggling doubt that always keeps me from just reading, and gets my critical mind looking at the aspects that don't work and so forth. i'm too much of a critic to just be a laid back fan. i'm envious that you can find such joy in it.
and the mini arcs are a nice approach, and the current arc holds promise, if only for the possible outcomes approaching
