And that’s the Lego Maniac!: One Piece 520 Review
Yosh, hello all on this fine Halloween Day (as of this writing, 10/31/08), wow talk about a good week for us manga fans. All the scanlations were done relatively quickly and we got it right in the middle of the week. A rare event but hey am not complaining. Also a source over at the Arlong Park forums infos that with this chapter, One Piece has officially surpassed its inspiration, the Dragon Ball series, in chapters (DB/DBZ told together: 519 chapters total). So congrats to Oda on overtaking his muse, here to hoping more success in One Piece and whatever direction he take it. That said let’s get to reviewing. Special thanks to Franky House for their English translated scanalation.
Now where were we?: Luffy’s execution got under way as Marigold and Sandersonia begun their attack on Luffy. Despite being able to dodge most of their attacks, Luffy’s counters had virtually no effect on the Boas. This is due to the fact he can’t bypass the sisters' haki which is keeping him from dealing direct blows. Hancock then orders the girls to kill him which they proceed to do so but first grab Margaret’s statue and threaten to smash her in front of Luffy’s eyes. Luffy yells at them to stop releasing enormous haki, identified as Haoushoku or King’s Dispostion, which halt the two from their action and faint most of the Kujas. Despite not knowing what he did, Luffy proceed to continue the fight by going to Gear 2.
One Piece 520: Gorgon’s Eyes (or Taming the shrews…er snakes)
Cover Time: Odd Fruits and Old Maid once more
Color cover time. Another maxing and relaxing cover by da which show the crew in another strange yet colorful environment, fruit related this time. The majority of the crew playing Old Maid (which isn’t the first time, they done so before in another cover), while Zoro, Nami, Chopper and Brook sample the fruit grown around them. Heh I would love to try some Melonana myself there (even though am not much of a watermelon fan =P)
Kicking it up a notch
Picking up from last week, we indeed see Luffy going Gear 2nd here, astonishing the crowd once more (and of course the Kuja misinterpreting Luffy for what men do) with the steam rising out of his body. Marigold and Sandersonia, while trying to tell themselves that Luffy can’t control his haki to be a real threat, seems to be still a bit shaken. Luffy may not have realized what he done but that doesn’t mean they can simply ignore the power he holds. Thus can’t afford not to be cautious either.
Now let’s try this again
Following on this, Sandersoina then goes to the big guns by forming her hair into snakes in a attack called Yamata no Orochi (which of course is based off the old Japanese legend), sending them toward Luffy which is interesting cause unless her zoan power grants her more abilities this is likely haki power which proves my theory last time that it can be modified. If so Luffy still has more potential in his attacks later on down the line. But for the time being relies on his G2 techniques which has actually given him the advantage. Sandersonia, despite being able to read his move, can’t keep up with him for her snakes to hit (which by the way has been strengthen to be as tough as steel). Allowing Luffy to pay her back for slamming him with a slam of his own. You know what they say, karma a jerk.
Marigold goes next by trying to swipe at him with her spear. Not that it did any good last time and certainly not now with Luffy in this state who proceeds to get behind her. He readies to attack though Marigold thinks that she’ll be able to deflect it again. Clearly she hasn’t been paying attention here with what happened to her sister and ends up paying for it with a Jet Bazooka. Nearly knocking her off the arena and breaking her weapon in the process. So it does look like his Jet moves have some effects after all on defensive Haki. Though Luffy will still have to put in a little more into the attack if he wants to get past this, we’ll see down the line.
We are not amused
The tables have certainly turned now as the crowd is speechless that Luffy, who not awhile ago was getting knocked silly, now has the Kuja sisters on the ropes. Hancock, surprisingly no longer showing her arrogant demeanor, tells the sisters to stop playing around. Which is enough to get them back into action albeit nervously. Looks like Hancock starting to grow up a bit here, up till now there never been an opponent she couldn’t easily subdue with her stone power. But upon seeing Luffy proving to be formidable she realizing the gravity of the situation, that there is indeed someone with greater power then her own that can possibly beat her. I don’t blame her for being serious now, the thought probably scaring the wits out of her.
Pulling out all stops
The sisters then go to their ultimate attack. Marigold setting herself alight (yet not feeling it) then forming Salamanders from the fire she produces (which may be more haki modification on her part) while Sandersonia tries her Orochi attack again as the sisters surround Luffy. This time giving him no place to run. Nice strategy on their part, they realize he beating them by being too quick for them to counter so what better way then to stop him then by taking away his space to move about.
But Luffy doesn't roll over that easy, he didn’t get this far by being predictable. He aims upward and fires off his Jet Gatling move blowing away the snakes and salamanders before they even have a chance to get within an inch of him, thwarting the attack utterly. Causing the Kuja crowd to pull out the expression we all love in these types of situations: slack jawed disbelief.
Luffy the victor
Luffy then does a split kick to the girls underbellies (even though its a small image, gotta admit look pretty slick) causing their upper halves to collide into each other. Sandersonia ends up getting burned as a result since Marigold is still on fire. They try to separate but find that Luffy somehow managed to tie their tails together (Which I knew was going to be coming sooner or later. How can you not have a snake fight and not have that happen). Luffy flashes the victory sign here which is rather odd of him, he never been much a gloater but I guess since he has an audience might as well play to the crowd.
Luffy the gentleman
Sandersonia in agony as the fire continues to burn her. In her frenzy she falls backward too fair and nearly goes into the spike pit (which would’ve pulled Marigold down as well) but manages to grab onto the audien stands to save herself. Luffy suddenly jumps onto her back which the Kuja think is him trying to finish her off. Sandersonia calls for Marigold to finish him. However Marigold realizes the truth of his action and lets her sister know: Luffy actually protecting them. The Kuja emphasize further, noticing that Sandersonia’s clothes have been burned off and her back is showing from her position. If not for Luffy, their secret “the Gorgon’s Eyes” would be exposed. Luffy, remembering Hancock’s words from when he landed in the bathhouse, reveals he never intended to kill the girls in the first place. Oda indeed told us that Luffy never kills his opponents and this is the first time he actually declares it out loud, a sharp contrast from the girls who were trying to do him in and even willing to hurt one of their own not a moment ago.
Once Hancock realizes what Luffy doing, she tells the Kuja to evacuate the arena which they all do so in a bit of mild panic. As they do Sandersoina ask why Luffy would help them since they were fighting just a moment ago? He answers simply, their secret and the fight have nothing to do with each other. How ironic, they were trying to kill him because he had found this out only to realize he didn’t give a crap about it. What more he actually helping them with their secret rather than let it be expose. Luffy may not know why, but if something important to someone he willing to go to great lengths that it stay that way and is not to be dishonored. A trait we all love about his character and one of the reasons that keep us coming back to the series every week.
So the witch…has a heart?
And finally we got a last shot of Hancock on her throne in the arena. Face covered by her hand and a few tears flowing as she cries to herself. Even for all her vanity and arrogance, she actually still a human being? Shock and awe, well that certainly stands things on it head neh?
And so…: Fight continues, Luffy goes Gear 2nd, manages to bypass the boa sisters' haki techniques and defeat them. The sisters' secret nearly exposed but Luffy helps keep it covered despite fighting one another, this action actually resulting in Hancock crying but why?
Fantastic chapter, even though nothing was revealed behind the techniques. We learn a little bit more about Haki through visuals which add to the mystery yet keep the excitement going. A great fight all around and even a little twist at the end with Hancock. Now we wonder what will she do now, will she help Luffy leave the island with this new development or otherwise? And what of Momoga, what he doing all this time and how will it affect the two pirates? Wish I had the answers but this is all we got for now. So until next time, keep your stick on the ice and try not to get too sick on candy out there. ;P
