I was reading some post and I can't imagine how people could said that this arc could've been better and that Nagato reviving everyone at the end just ruin his developpment because it was to quick.
Man, this arc was (well after the Sasuke retrieval one) the best in all the manga. It was in this arc that we saw all the ideal Jiraiya had and we finally began and finish to understant his point of view of the world.
Pain was the same as Naruto when he was young. He was a kid who had guts and a good ideal in life. When Jiraiya told him what was his main goal (finding peace) in life, and that he'll need his help to achieve it, he answer that all he want his protect his friend. And by following this ideal, he will find peace in the ninja world. He'll breat the curse and he will find the peace. When Nagato was young, he had the guts to never give up.
But the death of his best friend destroyed all of his hope. The pain he suffer was just to big for him to approve the ideal Jiraiya had. He just couldn't forgive the humans for beeing so selfish and stupid...and that even if you could understant people, it doesn't mean that you can forgive him and that revenge would be the only thing that you would want to achieve. This is how humans are. "Love breeds sacrifice, wich breeds hatred." This was Pain words and this was how he saw the world when Yahiko died.
And then come Naruto. Someone who, from his young age, already know a sort of pain call loneliness. Nobody wanted to talk to him, he was suffering from having no friend. No one wanted to accept him and he was always suffering alone. He had nobody to share his pain. So basically...he already knew a kind of pain, but not as strong as Nagato's. But then everything began to fall. He lost is best friend (just like Nagato lost his). He lost his Masters (just like Nagato lost his parents), and he village was destroyed. During all his training with Jiraiya, that pervy sage entrust him with the goal to find the answer that'll be able to bring peace to the world. His love for Jiraiya made him believed in what he believe. The day will come when people truly understant each other. The time will come when the chain of hatred will be broken, and peace will finally see the light.
Jiraiya ask Naruto that, if he isn't able to find peace while he is alive, it will be up to him. Naruto accept with pleasure. Even if he was naive the time he accept it, he never refuse this task, and during all his training with different masters, he always had in his mind the task if master gave him. When he learned about his Master death, when he learned what had happen to the village, in terms of pain, he was equal with Nagato. Without knowing, they were experiencing the same kind of Pain. Nagato hated Konoha as ever, and Naruto hated Nagato as ever. And the source of their hatred was: pain.
During the fight between two people with the same goal, given by the same master but interpretating in different ways, it was not only a conflict between a protagonist and an antagonist, but between two ideals. It was also a psychological conflict. One that think that peace can only be achieve by total pain and suffering and destruction, and the other that think that pain can be achieve by having the guts to never give up and to always try to find the peace by believing to your fellow nakamas. Despite the physical fight (ane AWESOME physical fight xD), this was the psycological conflict.
When Naruto finally defeated the 6th pain, he rush where the real pain was to discuss with him because there was two thing that were bugging him. The first was if he would've been able to throw away the hate he had for him if he saw his opponent face to face, and the other one was to know how a pupil of Jiraiya could've turn into a killing machine, knowing that Jiraiya instructions was never based of violence and fighting, but to peaceful way and understanding the other.
After hearing the story of Nagato, he fully understant his opponent. After hearing the pain he have gone through is life, Naruto finally understant why Nagato turned out to be like this. But he knew that this wasn't the right way of doing things. Naruto love and belive in Jiraiya SO MUCH that, even if he just listen to and incredible sad story, didn't want to throw out the instructions he gained with Jiraiya. He wanted to believe that one day, people will finally be able to understant each other. He wanted to believe that want day, the chain of hatred WILL be broken, and that peace will slowly but surely arrive. And he showed Nagato that the hatred CAN be broken by showing him PERSONALLY that he could broke it.
Nagato knew the hate Naruto had for him. He was the one who killed his master, who destroyed his village and who hurt almost to death the girl he appreciate alot (cause we still don't know if he love her :P). He knew what he caused to Naruto's life and the hate that Naruto built wasn't a little hate. By knowing that and by seeing that someone with such hate was able to destroy this sensation, and to move to other thing, this gesture made him realise that Jiraiya wasn't wrong when he said that people will one day understant each other.
Naruto understands Nagato really well, and by understanding him, decide to break that hatred. But Nagato wasn't convice in total when Naruto said him that he won't kill him, and that he will believe in Jiraiya. He chande drastically when Naruto said the same word he said when he was young. Naruto explain him his answer, saying that it is possible for someone to break that chain, and that one day, people will fully understant each other. He said that, even if he has to go to all kind of pain and suffering and battles, he will find peace because Jiraiya entrust him with the power to find the answer. Because he father believed in him, and because Kakashi believed in him to. He will not give up. I will break the curse. If there is such thing has peace I will find it. I won't give up
This was the statement Nagato said to Jiraiya. This was Nagato's goal all his life. Despite having all that pain, deep in his heart, he still remembered the promise he made to Jiraiya, the promise to find peace no matter what. Even if he has to go to all kind of suffering, he won't give up. Deap in his heart, he still wanted to accomplish this promise.
When Nagato realise that Naruto was the name of the book Jiraiya wrote. When he realise that Jiraiya was actually taking his own words to write the book, when he realise the importance he had in Jiraiya's life and the importance he words were. When he realise that Jiraiya believed in him to find the peace, and that he entrust all of his faith into him, that is when he began to change. He realise that what he did was a hole mess. He finally became a normal guy, and understand what Jiraiya wanted him to be. A man with a lot of guts, who won't give up until he achieve what he wanted to do. By seeing Naruto saying the EXACT same words he said, by seeing his determination to find peace, despite all the pain he has been going through throughout all these days), he realise that peace could be brought by understanding each other, and that the chain of hatred CAN be broken.
This was a HUGE developpement for Nagato. In only one or two chapters, we saw a completly different Nagato. People have to think above what is presented. Kishimoto isn't only (well now this is my perception) showing us a story to amuse us. He wants the readers to actually understand something through his story. He wants us to understand that in life, even though it can be difficult, you have to stick in your dreams. You have to stick in life and never give up until your dream is achieve. This is what he is showing us through Naruto character. He showed us that if we are beeing beaten by the reality of life and the difficulty of life, we could turn into monsters and we could change drastically. But that if you stick to your dreams, if you never give up, you will be able to overcome the pain life can cause and you will achieve your dreams.
When Nagato finally understood what Jiraiya wanted him to for years, when he understood Naruto perception of peace, when he saw that Naruto had broken the chain of hatred, and that he will devote his life in order to find peace in the world, even though it is complicate, he became a new man. He finally understand that all the action he took was really bad, and that even Yahiko wouldn't be pride of him. He finally understand what Jiraiya taught him and regret his actions. This is why he decided to revive all the people he killed in Konoha. He finally knew that what he did was really bad, and that he real fixe up his mess. He saw in Naruto a light of hope, and he decided to believe in him, the same way Jiraiya believed him (well believe Nagato). He knew that he was going to die by doing this, but the release he had when he saw the light of hope in Naruto was enough for him to devote his life to this child, who one day, will bring peace to the world.
Just before dying, Nagato told Naruto something really importants: Dying like trash. Neverending hatred, Pain that never heals. That...is...war.Naruto, this is what you must face. He told Naruto that if he truly want to bring peace to the world, despite having face the pain of losing all the friends he loved, he will have to face the reality of a war, and that if he really have the guts to never give up, he will suceed.
I will believe in you, Uzumaki Naruto
I know this post was long, but I had to do this. I had to show that the arc we just read and saw for like 6 months was one of the best. It showed us not only Naruto growth in term of strength, but in maturity. It showed us all the vision Jiraiya had of the world, it showed us how someone can turn to a real monster just because of pain and suffering and it showed us that, even though life his hard, you have to stick to your dream. This was a really nice arc, mature and fun to read.
Nagato reviving everyone at the end was awesome to. Now, we are about to see another incredible arc (well I hope) with Sasuke arrival. Kishi, dont dissapoint me xD.
