So most of its early hype was fan-generated, rather than advertising-generated.

How a manga will get boosted sales will depend on how it well its anime will impress and convert new fans, rather than high anticipation from its existing fandom.
lol @ no hype for shingeki when it had a trailer like this.

It's impressive that Shingeki is now second in terms of combined sales. Even though the premiere of the anime played a significant role, it's still an achievement for it to sell so many tankobons in such a short period of time.

Seriously, is just me or everything is selling less or slower than normal while Shingeki sells more and more?

Not lower; just many series to get out of top 50 or not make into top 50 becasue more than 1/5 of 50 places are taken by Shingeki no Kyojin (and its comedic side-kick).

I did not say there was no hype. Please reread my post. The Shingeki manga fanbase was excited but their excitement is nowhere near the amount of hype generated when the first episode premiered. It wasn't merely that interest in Shingeki was doubled or tripled or even multiplied by 10.

In April alone, its Google Trends activity was as busy as One Piece. That's a massive amount of hype.

Even Kodansha wasn't prepared since they ran out of copies in just 2 months after the anime premiered and had to print an extra 8-9 million copies.

Also, in terms of advertising hype - apparently Devil Survivor 2 was more hyped by Pony Canyon before the Shingeki hype explosion on April 7-8. I can't totally verify this, but it seems true because according to their ANN pages, there's more Devil Survivor 2 pre-premiere news than Shingeki pre-premiere news.

    ---

About the comic ranking and Shingeki's squatting on about a fifth of it for over a month. Did One Piece or Naruto did something similar? I know Kuroko didn't.

I think Magi did the same when the anime started, but with consistently lower sales than Shingeki, if I remember corretly.

I believe Ao no Exrocist and Kuroku also did made the ranking over month. But, they never stay long like Shingeki.

    Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

These sales don't happen in a void. They don't tell the whole story, not everything is the same just because they are all manga and anime. SnK is a pop culture phenomenon in Japan, something that has grown beyond just a manga and anime audience. Magi and AnE both have been popular, but never crossed over the way SnK has. SnK's anime is significantly more popular than AnE or Magi's. The three anime are not actually comparable in popularity, or even close. Among recent anime, SnK compares better to K-On, Anohana, Steins;Gate, Madoka Magica, and Monogatari Series. If I had to guess (and that is all any of us can do), SnK's sales are being pushed by readers who typically do not read manga anymore, similar to One Piece's explosion in popularity a few years ago. Readers who would not buy AnE, Magi, or even Naruto are buying One Piece and SnK. SnK has become part of the wider pop culture, that's why it's sales have increased so much, and that is why catalog volumes continue to sell.

Kuroko's anime also was more popular than AnE and Magi, though not as popular to SnK.

Sorry, my mental calendar wasn't working properly. I forgot that Shingeki volumes has been occupying the charts since April, more than 4 months. Not just a month.

Has multiple One Piece (or Naruto) volumes ever occupy the chart for months? Maybe FMA or Death Note did something like it? Or Nana?

I think One Piece should had done so, perhaps during the years when it sold over 30 million copies.

Oricon ranking for manga started 2008 and those series are already popular when Oricon started.
