Re: General Anime and Drama News and Announcements

I don’t even know what Star Driver will be about and I’m already sold on it just by knowing that Bones is the studio that is going to animate it. Yes, that is how much faith I have in the stuff Bones animates . I have enjoyed many of the series animated by that studio (OHSHC, FMA, Soul Eater). However, as naïve as this may sound, I was secretly hoping that the next BONES project would be another season of Ouran High School Host Club.

I hope not. Bake was huge, maybe usurping Haruhi as thee TV anime of recent years. If it is long enough for 12 episodes it will be on TV. I'm already fanboying.

Bakemonogatari's Last BD Ranks #1 with 51,000 Copies
6th volume sets TV anime record for 1st-week sales, topping 4th volume's 48,000

    Quote Quote:
The marketing survey firm Oricon reports that the sixth and final Blu-ray Disc volume of the Bakemonogatari anime series sold 51,000 copies to rank #1 on the sales chart for the July 26-August 1 week. The much-delayed volume sets a television anime record for first-week sales; the previous record-holder was the fourth Bakemonogatari volume, which sold 48,000 copies. Altogether, the six volumes in the series have sold 325,000 copies.

The sixth volume includes the final two episodes of the series, which were streamed and not televised before the home video release.
In first-week sales, the first Bakemonogatari volume sold 29,000 copies, the second sold 39,000 copies, the third sold 41,000, and the fifth sold 46,000. An anime adaptation of Kizumonogatari, the prequel volume to NisiOisin's original Bakemonogatari light novel series, has already been green-lit.
Ads Streamed with Hugh Laurie's House, Tezuka's Black Jack

1st collaboration between overseas live-action series & Osamu Tezuka's anime

    Quote Quote:
Geneon Universal Entertainment began streaming two commercials that combine the American live-action medical television series House and Osamu Tezuka's classic medical manga/anime Black Jack on Wednesday. ( http://www.geneonuniversal.jp/movie/...e/movie4.html# ) The titular doctors House (played by British actor Hugh Laurie) and Black Jack appear together in the commercials, which are the first collaborative efforts between an overseas live-action television series and a Tezuka anime.

The first 30-second commercial is the one that is actually running on the CS satellite television system's Fox channel in Japan. The second 73-second commercial is the extended web version. The premise of the commercials has Black Jack flying to America (with his young companion Pinoko in tow) as Dr. House's potential new team member. However, the two maverick geniuses do not necessarily see eye-to-eye at first. The voice actors who dub these two titles into Japanese collaborated on the commercials.

Geneon Universal Entertainment is the DVD distributor of House in Japan, where it is known as Dr. House. Wednesday happens to be the DVD release date for the fourth season of House in Japan.

Baka and Test Gets New OVA Before 2nd TV Season

2nd TV season of school fantasy battle comedy already slated for next year

    Quote Quote:
The October issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shonen Ace magazine is announcing on Thursday that production on a new original video anime (OVA) project of Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts has been green-lit. The OVA will be released before the second television anime season, which has been slated for next year.

The first Baka and Test — Summon the Beasts anime television season adapted Kenji Inoue's fantasy romantic comedy light novels, and it aired in Japan from January 6 to March 31. The story centers around Akihisa Yoshii, the "baka" of the title. His magical academy rigidly divides up the student body into classes based on the results of tests. The prodigies are in Class A with reclining seats complete with air conditioning, but Akihisa is in Class F, the lowest rung of the school ladder which is furnished only with low, decrepit tables and worn-out straw tatami mats. Akihisa decides to rally Class F to take on the higher-tiered classes and seize their perks. Class F uses its summoning powers in an all-out battle for school supremacy.

Funimation licensed and simulcasted the first television season in North America.

Paradise Kiss Manga Gets Live-Action Film Green-Lit

Keiko Kitagawa, Osamu Mukai to star in fashion story from NANA's Ai Yazawa

    Quote Quote:
The October issue of Shodensha's women's fashion magazine Zipper is announcing on Monday that a live-action film adaptation of Ai Yazawa's Paradise Kiss manga has been green-lit. Keiko Kitagawa (live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon's Sailor Mars, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift's Reiko) is starring in the film, and she also adorns the cover of Zipper's October issue. Osamu Mukai (Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, Beck) will co-star, and the rest of the cast includes Natsuki Katō, Aya Ōmasa, Kento Kaku, Shunji Igarashi, and Yūsuke Yamamoto.

The original manga centered around a high school student named Yukari Hayasaka (Kitagawa) who is discovered by "Paradise Kiss," a group of up-and-coming fashion school students including Jōji "George" Koizumi (Mukai). The students transform Yukari (now nicknamed "Caroline") into a fashion model, and she discovers a new passion for a future career and potential romance in her personal life.

The manga ran in Zipper from 1999 to 2003, and Shodensha sold 6 million copies of the five compiled book volumes. Tokyopop began publishing the original manga in North America in 2001, and MADHOUSE's anime version aired in Japan in 2005. Geneon Entertainment (USA) licensed the anime for North America in 2006, although Funimation has since released the anime in DVD box sets.

The Hollywood Reporter magazine posted an article in 2009 about Fox International's negotiations for a Japanese-language, live-action film adaptation. According to the magazine, Fox International would be working with Japan's IMJ production company to produce the film with a budget of US$3 million to US$4 million, but these companies have not been announced for the current project.

Yazawa also created the NANA manga about polar-opposite roommates in Tokyo, and that manga has sold 34 million copies so far. IMJ and the Japanese TBS television network adapted NANA into two hit live-action films, and Aniplex and Madhouse adapted it into a television anime series. Viz Media is releasing the NANA manga, as well as its live-action and anime adaptations.

    [Via Mushi]

    Update: More background information added.

Update 2: The film will open in Japan in 2011. Eiga.com notes that Mukai is literally Kitagawa's sempai; Mukai is four years older than Kitagawa (who turned 24 on Sunday), and they both have attended Meiji University in Tokyo. Eiga.com also states that over 5 million copies of the manga have been published, and the story has been translated into 10 languages for America, Italy, Korea, and elsewhere.
