It's pretty surprising how sharp the drop off is after Jump and Magazine. Obviously they're the big two, but nothing else really seems to even come close.
It's also interesting how many magazines with popular series don't seem to capitalize too much on that. For example, Cookie only sells 160,000 copies even though NANA's volumes sell well over 1,000,000 copies? Obviously there are a lot of graphic novel only readers, but it's surprising that there's such a large disparity.
Personally, I felt that only NANA in Cookie is worth reading, the rest just don't click. I would rather save the money and get the Nana tank. And compared to Hana to Yume, Hana have more interesting series such as Skip Beat, Hoshi wa Uta. Maybe it's a girl's mentality to buy something that has more value for money or tanks which they can keep forever

Cookie mostly puts out high drama, soap opera - ish manga. They've never had a hit outside of Nana. And Nana is as big as it is now based on the success of the movie, rather then people finding it through the magazine. Betsuma and HanaYume really control the older teen market with LaLa not far behind. All three appeal to adults as well. While each generally lose college age readers, they do better with post - graduates then any josei anthologies. Each produce a remarkable number of hits, it's surprising that their magazine sales are falling. Their tankobon sales are as strong (or stronger) then Sunday and Magazine.
CoroCoro in the #3 spot really surprised me.
i never new it was that popular, but then again, it does have quite a monopoly over pre-shounen kids.

Corocoro is always really high, it's very old and very popular. The results for Ciao and Chu Chu, young teen shojo magazines from Shogakukan, were not released. Both sell around a million copies a week. The rank is a little off because of that.
No, it's not you, Gangan is not there. Nothing from Square/Enix or Akita Shoten is there. Rival is not either. I presume sales information was not released to the public.
That is a shame. I'm actually interested in how much Gangan sells. If the entire magazine was actually popular I mean and people aren't just buying the Tanks of FMA and Soul Eater.
Sunday's sales have been falling quickly the last few years. They're circulation was still over a million in 2006. There problem is trying to be all things to all people, to appeal to younger teens and older. Jump concentrates on younger, Magazine on older; the two never directly compete for the same audience. Sunday has to compete with both.
I've always been fascinated by the "great seinen race to the bottom". Young Jump and Young Magazine both used to sell over a million, both are losing audience, and every few quarters will trade positions. Whichever one loses readers faster becomes the second most popular seinen anthology. WYJ was more popular than WYM just two quarters ago. WYM lead the quarter before that.
Nintendo DS, PSP, cell phones, the internet
I think some of us, myself included, in the west give the magazines a more hallowed place within the industry then they actually hold. They are magazines, something cheap and disposable that you read once and throw away. With modern technology their are to many other ways to distract yourself when you would normally get a magazine. Tankobon are different, they cost more money, look nicer on a bookshelf and are made for some semblance of permanence. So while the cheap magazines have given way people still want to read books of their favorite series.
Also I think the massive magazine circulation of the early '90's was a bubble. More magazines were being produced then could be sold but with the perceived, Dragonball read manga boom book stores and markets were happy to order more. By the mid - '90's the series that carried the boom were gone or soon to be and the illusion couldn't be maintained. Japan's economic collapse and lost decade began around that time, surely that didn't help.

Weeky Jump, Young Animal Arashi, LaLa and Asuka are the only magazines to make gains this quarter, Korokoro did last quarter but fell this quarter. Betsucomi, LaLa Dx, and Dragon Age all remained stable.
Sunday's sales are very low, it not even passed 800,000 sales. I think Sunday needs more new generation of his series.
