Here in Sweden melodic death metal is pretty big. From the top of my head I can mention In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork and.. well, I suppose there are a lot more. There are countless less known bands following in the footsteps of In Flames and At The Gates.
I'm visiting Gothemburg after New Years, I hope there's something going on there ;_____________; Damn Dark Tranquility is gonna play some days after I arrive! >.<
Btw, not talking about Sweden now though...how could I have forgotten about Borknagar, Norther, Agalloch, Arch Enemy and Swallow the Sun on my favourites list. ;_;
Btw guys, those who have an account at last.fm can join the MH group there (http://www.last.fm/group/MangaHelper....fm?setlang=en), take a look at everyone's lists and reccomend stuff, take a look at it! Let's push some metal on those statistics! >D

So I ended getting into Insomium thanks to a few of you guys! . Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Like I said earlier Melodic Death Metal isn't as easy for me to find here in the states but for you Europeans its like everywhere, lol. I ended up getting their albm Above The Weeping World from 2006 I believe and I'm really liking it a lot . I also noticd in doing my research of them that they are coming out or have already come out with a new album calld Across the Dark sometime this month. Does anyone have it and if so how is it?
If you want to start on Melodic DM, try Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Hypocrisy, Norther and Dark Tranquility ("The Episode" album). If you want something a bit more complex, Opeth's "Blackwater Park" and "Deliverance". :3 I dunno this Insomnium yet, gonna check. :x
lol at never heard of Insomnium, they have some excellent stuff
Oh, there's another Melo-death band I haven't recommended yet. Kalmah. They're a bit heavier than most bands I listen to but I love their use of keyboards.
In the defense of Epica, the style relies of orchestra more. It is also easy to misjudge because the popular songs are generally the songs without death growls. IMHO Epica is nothing without the grunts. I guess it's a big mongrel, but I hardly see it as girly-operatic stuff. Epica isn't even as operatic as old Nightwish. Old Nightwish relied on heavy guitar and the operatic vocals of Tarya. So I dispute your characterization.
Within Temptation is also quite different from all of the above, pretty much because Sharon's voice is significantly dominant over all other instruments. Not really operatic, but certainly more popular and closer to rock style. I grew bored with them years ago, but I still feel they are unfairly generalized - after all, these bands are all better than listening to your retarded classmates play "Barbiegirl."
Melodic death metal's okay.
Great thread!, I also enjoy metal music and im always looking for new bands to listen to. I listen to many bands, always Iron Maiden, i recently broke an arm and im forced to do cardio indoors, which sucks, but i started listening to some speed metal to keep up the rhythm. I’m starting to like this music, especially Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica.
a few metal bands i've been listening to lately are born of osiris, arsonists get all the girls, suicide silence, and a few more. anyone else like this kind of metal?
seems like you have all been talking about a whole nother area of metal, arch enemy, inflames, and swedish death metal, im not to big on that stuff.
Other than Melodic Death Metal I like quite a few Metalcore bands like Chimaira, Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Himsa(they broke up ), etc. I like some progressive metal too like Mastodon. So yea I just don't listen to Melodic Death Metal, lol, its just the topic that came up ATM .
