Sony has published their rankings for the anime most downloaded in the Tokyo area to their Torne DVR kit for PS3 from September 30 - November 2. These are not national ranks, and only account for recordings using Sony equipments. Though by no means definitive, it is a nice look at what is popular this season. Manten, a Japanese entertainment site, posts Torne rankings every week. This is the first time ANN has translated them to English.
Kill la Kill seems to be getting more popular as the season progresses, with number of recordings rising every episode.

Kill la Kill was very heavily promoted before airing. It's popularity is not much of a surprise. Same with Kyoukai no Kanata. Do not forget that this ranking includes less than half of this seasons new anime. Being low on the list is still good, there are about 20 new series not even ranked. Non Non Biyori is "only" ranked 17, but the publisher has already announced that all six volumes of the manga have had reprints, due to the popularity of the anime. I don't know how much of a correlation this listing will have to BD/DVD sales. Remember that scales are heavily skewed towards titles that fans are willing to spend $60 - 80 for two episodes. IS2 has already had a BD sell more than 20,000 copies, the special edition of episode one that is currently charting. Galilei Donna is ranked ahead of it here, but I don't think there is much chance it's sales equal IS2's. I do think these rankings are a good general indicator of popularity, I don't think they are direct, hierarchical rankings.
Diamond no Ace airs from 8:30 - 9am on Saturdays. It airs at a reasonable time of day, there is less of a need to record.
Buddy Complex is 13. This should only reflect the first episode. Hamatora is not getting very much attention, in general, at least not yet. At this point last season I would have said the same about Arpeggio, and that ended up being one of the most popular new series. I wasn't impressed by Hamatora, but I wasn't impressed by Arpeggio either. Both happen to be by the same well known director. I do like Mahou Sensou, but am a little shocked to see it ahead of Nisekoi, Chuu2 Ren, and Hoozuki.

Torne download rankings from December 30, 2013 to February 2, 2014. The previously posted chart only ranked the first episode of new, winter anime.
