Re: The Movie Thread! - Continuation

Well, I didn't like the web shooters in the comic books either lol. Its not quite something I found to be a flaw in the movie itself, it is just a version of spiderman I dislike in comparison to other versions. Seriously, peter being antman makes far more sense than being spiderman so far. I grew up watching the animated spiderman series and I always hated how he would just run out of spiderwebs.

Well, aunt may didn't quite have a chance to be more developed. The focused more on the uncle ben relationship which makes sense because we already had 3 other movies which were all about aunt may. Still, odds are peter's relationship with aunt may will be more developed in the next movies. Even if she did not get quite the focus uncle ben got she still made a terrific job, there is a lot of potential there.

Was he really dumber? And to be fair, this was a younger peter who was just at high school. The peter from the other movie was several years older and was a college level student. I would argue this peter was even smarter than the one from the previous movies.

Did peter complete the formula or did he just give the formula he found to the scientist? I got the impression he merely found the formula in the papers his dad left behind.

Six stunning pictues from Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful
    Spoiler show

Need to write some short reviews to the dozen movies I got to watch over the last two weeks. :E

So has someone seen some of Akira Kurosawa's "modern japan" movies? I still have half ot the collection waiting to be watched, but I want to keep a bit of time in between them. Is there a recommendation with which to begin? Ikiru seems to be the most praised of those.

Got done with my second last[out of eight] Bunta Sugawara movie The Man who stole the sun[Taiyô wo nusunda otoko]. It's about a school teacher who steals some Plutonium from an atomic plant and builds himself his own a-bomb, being the 9th power in the world to own one. Don't want to spoiler much more than this picture will likely do. Just found it funny when you think about Oda's muse for Akainu, the Red Dog. And it's the first one without the Borsalino counterpart Kunie Tanaka.

Re: The Movie Thread! - Continuation

Watched The Dark Knight Rises today. Maybe I was expecting too much from Nolan this time, since this is the last Batman film that he directed, but TDK Rises is still inferior compared to its prequel, IMO. I get a feeling that TDK Rises has the same blueprint with TDK, and instead of repeating its success, it fails to meet my expectation. The sub-plot can be confusing sometimes, since the movie is generally fast paced. The thing that I could praise from this movie is the first half of the movie. After that, the plot twists and the ending are not as good as the first half of the movie. Bane really has a lot of potential to be the main antagonist, but then again, he doesn't left any creepy impression on me like Joker did.

I also saw the Batman tonight. Main problem was straightforwardness and predicatability. It wasn't that complex at all. Also some moments of the dialoque felt a little silly, and at times it was so serious of itself it was unintentionally amusing. However, the story kept me interested for the almost 3 hours, which didn't feel like 3 hours at all. That is always good. The flow of the film worked quite well. I liked Bane as a villain, and bits with Gordon and Alfred were again amazing. Selina Kyle was on the borderline. I've never been really fond of Hathaway though. Action was cool and it had many gorgeous scenes. And how much they used real people and places instead of CGI is impressive, and I sure do tip hat to Nolans opinion on 3D.

All this stuff about it being perfect film which changes the watchers worldview and that Nolan is some sort of semi-god with a golden touch is bullshit though. Nolan is very good. Particulary with detail and mythological storytelling. But just no. It was touching at times, but it didn't change me or evoke massive emotions. It was a good film. Very solid package. Also gotta give a nod to the sound design. Brilliant. Music was conveyor belt Zimmer, but as always, it works. I liked it, but I didn't find best films of all time caliber like many others seem to think.

To be fair, Nolan had big shoes to fill after DK. However, I always found DK overrated too. I actually rate all three films in about the same line. DKR might actually be my favorite of the bunch. It is just... The Joker is always The Joker.

I actually enjoyed TDK Rises. just the right amount of story and action and badass. Plot's not too complicated- succinct pace of the movie, etc.

on another note, does anyone have a review of Brave? it looks really sweet.

Brave? Is that the redhead mulan? Well, wikipedia would tell us that overall the movie was well received. 77% positive reviews on rotten tomatoes, 3 out of 4 stars... Can't say I would go watch that particular movie though.

I don't care about these run of the mill animations anymore. There's too many of them. Complete over-saturation.

But it is Pixar. Only mistake on their record is Cars and the sequel.

I do agree that Brave doesn't seem as original and creative as most of their ideas. As said, it seems like basicly Mulan in celtic setting. What pissed me most, that it has been out in States for weeks I guess, but it isn't coming here untill one and a half months. Not like I'm sure if I'm gonna watch it though.

Even so...and I know fans of these types of animated films will say there are differences between the the companies, but it's all one big colorful blob to me. Only some here and there look interesting to me.

It'd be cool to see some hand-drawn animated films again. I was actually planning on watching Winnie the Pooh but then I realized I be the only person my age inside the theater...

Indeed. For that, I sort of hope that the Bone or Blacksad film projects would rise from the production graveyard.

Talking of animated features, I'm quite curious of ParaNorman. It looks so good it's hard to believe its stop-motion. The story though.. It's borderline wheter it's gonna turn out kinda cool, funny and funky horror stuff with plenty of cult references, or just another childrens supernatural detective. Like the art style of it a lot though.

I haven't watched Brave yet, but I didn't feel the similarity with Mulan.

When you think about it, almost all of these princess stories are about changing their destinies, and that's about it. So other than that major plot device, I feel this movie had a unique twang to it. not story-wise, but I thought the Celtic setting is sort of cool and "new". And the soundtrack sounds amazing.

    Lincoln (2012)

Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln
    Directed by Steven Spielberg
Screenplay among others by Tony Kushner (Munich)

I wasn't following this project up-to date. I saw some productions stills somewhere, but didn't expect this movie to come out this year. This is quite a positive surprise. I thought this year was only about TDKR and Avengers, basically comic heroes.

I love history, Abraham Lincoln is my favourite American president. I also like DDL. He is known as a real character actor. I hope this movie does well. But honestly, seeing the cast, I have no doubts. I smell a few Oscars.

This movie has the potential to be fan-freaking-tastic. The cast is pretty exceptional looking and it's Spielberg......oh and DDL....has he ever been in a bad movie?

I'm surprised it's him. The only movie I can remember with him on it was Last of the Mohicans.
