Do you think that we, anime and manga fans, are to be considered nerds?

I only read three mangas. Am I a nerd? Heck no, otherwise a person reading different books must be a book nerd and every potter reader must be a nerd.

The only difference is that manga is seen by some as a childs book because in some countries, the anime-form appears to be for kids because the telestation which shows the anime cuts the "brutal" scenes and changes the texts. Its really bad here in Germany.

Little do they now that its actually not suited for little kids and the people who think that its for kids have to be declared a nerd. Oficially, Naruto for instance is a manga for adults and young-adults (teenager starting 15-16)

After all, if manga readers are nerds, every football, hockey, socccer, basketball and baseball fan has to be a nerd too, if we follow that logic...everybody has to be a nerd somehow.

This is to be answered easy: have you come across nerds who don't read manga and who don't watch anime? Yes... Well then I am sure you'll come across people who read manga and who watch anime who aren't a nerd.

It's a hobby nothing more nothing less, my life is too social (going out with friends, doing sports,...) and I have a lot of other interests (cooking, politics,...) to say that I am not a nerd -> even if I post here a lot

Well,well,i don't know if i would consider myself a nerd.On the one hand,I mean,i read manga and watch anime and discuss them.I even have some anime games,even though it's just one series i buy.That's about it actually.I do color manga pages,draw fanarts and even work on my own manga,but that's more because i actually am an "artist",so i practise with fun and all that.I'd like to make a living with manga and actually draw manga for money.
On the other hand,i don't have any anime figures or t-shirts.I don't go around shouting RASENGAN!!!!"!!11!,don't say Baka and Kuso all the time and i don't make videos of me making Chidori.
Similiar to shinsengumi I see manga and anime as a form of art,which i enjoy a lot and which inspires me,mainly because of the creativity,which i don't see in most of the western comics and shows.

Mmmmm i dont consider that by reading manga o watching some anime im a nerd. First of all, at least im reading not like most people that are glued to a TV set. The thing is having balance, having more activities that reading manga and watching anime.
Such as traveling, sports (actually doing it not just changing the channel to ESPN) having a girlfriend also helps to not be label as a nerd lol!

Lol it never bothers me when ppl say that im a geek or a nerd or nothing i just tell them that im damn proud. and they can go f*** themselves if they dont like it.

though ive learned in my 25 years ive learned some important lessons.

1. The media only ever tells one side of any story and there only trying 2 sell you on reality.
2. always try 2 see things from other peoples perspective before you act on anything.
3. dont ever take a person at thier word ( this was a hard learned lesson)
4. help people out when u can, but know when not 2 help them aswell

eg. im a barman in profession, and recently when the management changed, the new gaffer asked me 2 do the lines (Cleaning the beer lines usually a good use for a massive smash up 50 pints of lager down the drain every 2 weeks some goes in our mouths tho) a pain in the ass when your cellar is down 2 flight of stairs and that was fine but then she kept asking and i kept doing and before i knew it she wasnt asking me 2 do it anymore but telling me to and its her job not mine so the moral is yeah help out, but sometimes dont help out aswell, because u will get walked all over.

5. Dont expect strangers 2 treat you fairly, cause if u do your a fool.
6. Life's what you make it, it dont matter what your into whether u love anime or football or anything at all, dont be ashamed no matter what u like.
7. watch out for people who say thay are your friends but only exploit you.

how 2 identify such a person.

they always want 2 come round and they dont ever leave. always ask 2 let money and always try 2 lay the giult trip on you when u dont want 2 hang out with them.

What classifies someone as a nerd?

Some people will call someone a "nerd" because they study a lot and get good grades. Others will call that person diligent and intelligent.

While some may consider enjoying anime and manga "nerdy", I really don't. Then again I'm biased because I enjoy most works of fiction and enjoy science fiction and fantasy and what not.

Long story short, I think everyone has a little "nerd" in them. People will try and deny it, but it's true, we all have our guilty pleasures that others will consider weird or in this case, nerdy.

i don't know... some people call a nerd anyone who reads a lot, studies and is what i would generally call book-smart, but others believe that there has to be some extra talent and not just books. in any case, if someone wants to be identified as nerd and that's what makes them happy, that's fine with me but forcing any characterisation down on people's throat is just wrong

IMO I think what would classify you as an anime/manga nerd is if your a 30 year old man who still lives in his moms basement playing with action figured of Naruto and Goku and Cosplaying by yourself.

I think for me, you become a nerd about it when you start taking the things you read and watch and start trying to live it. For me I read it and I watch it and I discuss it. I love it very much and I sometimes may get all giddy like a child when something epic happens, BUT THATS IT. My everyday life doesn't consist of me running around my house doing kamehameha waves and yelling Bankai. When these wonderful fantasy worlds that we get to enjoy start inflicting with your everyday life, then your a nerd in my book.

I don't really find it nerdy to discus manga online, I find out a lot of useful facts in series that help me find a new way of looking at it. Although with that being said there is a limit if you start to discussing manga pairings (when anyone else would properly spend time thinking of their own love life, am I right?) or start to freak out over who would win in an imaginary fight between fictional characters that is treading into nerdy territory right there.

I just read it enjoy it and than thats that!

One last thing to add I know many people do find anime childish but I thought people would think above that now, sure over half the stuff is directed at kids but there are a lot of series that are not. It really it's own medium, like regular television programs it varies alot from one piece, deathnote, bebop and pokemon.

I think of manga as a format to distribute stories with it's own unique visual style.

Anyways, I really don't see how anyone posting in this forum can be considered anything but a nerd. It's not just an appearance thing nor about studying, if you post here and in general discuss comic books (graphic novels my ass, they are fucking comic books regardless of shounen or seinen) then deep down you are a nerd in some form.

Depends but I would say no theres nothing wrong with liking some animation or comic I mean I like even western comic books and still noone dares to call me a nerd its all about how you represent yourself amongst people since if all you have for talking subject is anime,manga,comic books etc yes I would say you can be referred as a nerd sorry for the cold fact but still nerds arent even bad I mean their cool in my book
