she's not lucy.
Well I am going to look at this from the perspective of appeal. Lucy is appealing to the eye. Her main purpose is to lose as much clothing as possible in each arc to keep the male audience satisfied.
I am serious about this, please don't delete. :P
Well, there is a gag about lucy losing her cloths at least once an arc but limiting her function to that is a gross exageration. She has always played her part in missions and can be a versatile combatant due to the varied powers of her spirits. It could not plausible be more obvious she is somewhat related to the dragons and the grand scheme of things considering her mother's death date.
New theory about Lucy!!: Lucy's memories about her mother's death was sealed by someone. This explains why Lucy didn't react at all when Wendy told her of the date the dragons disappeared. Layla must have been working with someone to keep Lucy away from the truth. What truth, I dunno. But we'll likely get it in the future. I'm also sure her dad also knows about it but promised Layla to keep it a secret as well.
BTW, this theory is not mine. Credits go to Moonlight Through the Water of FF.net
When did wendy tell lucy about the date the dragons disappeared?
Hopefully Lucy gets stronger in this arc somehow and shows if she has some relations with the dragons but I doubt it =/
her purpouse is to get kidnapped and unlocking natsu's true dragon slayer destructive potential along the way lol
The dragon thing is only a theory and there is 99.9% of probability it's not true.
Her only purpose is to get made fun of by Happy.
Other than be the 'new guy' and provide an insight to the world for us, I'm a bit confused as to her purpose. For a supposed main character, she doesn't have much to do with the overarching plot (search for the Dragons). I do think that there's a reason behind the way there's a Lucy mini-arc in between each major arc though. Maybe that is her overarching story, and/or it has to do with the Dragon hunt.
People tend to keep forgetting that Lucy's main purpose is telling us the story. Thus the reasons for her being the center point of side stories and such.
I suggest for those new to the thread... read the previous posts and you will have a better understanding.

Does anyone think that Lucy's mom might not even really be dead? Like did they ever mention how she died? What if she simply 'vanished' that day? I mean it's totally plausible to write off a missing person as dead, after all people go missing without finding a body all the time. It could explain why Lucy writes to her Mom as though she was still alive.
Lucy has to be in some way related to the dragons and by extension the main plot. Are you guys really telling me lucy's mom died exactly on the day the dragons disappeared, mashima made a point to show that and she is still not directly or indirectly connected to those events? Seriously, lucy has a moderately big role in the plot and most likely so does her dead mother.
Lucy is a big purpose...she narrates the story, she goes on missions with Natsu, her mother is somewhat connected to the disappearance of the dragons. I believe that her mother's "death"-if she even died- was the cause of the disappearance of the dragons since Igneel went to hiding and is trying to avoid humans (he said while talking to Wendy's dragon-sorry don't know name-) and plus why would they abandon their proteges-which i think to not hurt them since they like humans not like dark dragons(the one that attacked Gildhartz)? In general Lucy is one of the main characters of the series and probably will progress in the future.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned the fact that Lucy's blood appears to be special in some way, Angel fired that canon right at her and somehow the blood from her arm kind of redirected the attack.
It is obviously related to Lucy's mother, since her blood runs threw her veins since she is her daughter; just a random thought but maybe Layla was a Fairy or something 'cause she is definitely tied to the dragons in some way and I don't think she was 100% human.
I don't think it's related to the blood. The canon itself is a stellar spirit and probably has avoided Lucy on purpose
