Since pretty early on it's been revealed that only half of the Kyuubi was sealed within Naruto (actually, very early on). If you don't need anything special to contain it, then why go thru the trouble of reducing it's chakra to 50% before sealing the remainder in Naruto? Him being an infant is no excuse. The Ichibi was sealed in Gaara when he was still in his mother's womb. Also, the fact that Gaara's bijuu is the Ichibi doesn't mean that, since it's a weaker monster, it wouldn't be too strong to seal in a fetus. The hachibi was sealed in Killerbee when he was still a kid, and the Hachibi is just one monster down from the Kyuubi. So if we go by the amount of tails, the Hachibi comes in second place.
The nature of the Kyuubi's chakra is likely to be the reason. It is a poisonous chakra that reduces the life expectancy of its jinchuuriki. That's probably why an Uzumaki was also the best container. Their longevity most likely nulls or greatly reduces the degenerative factor of the Kyuubi's chakra (along with the special chakra that the previous two jinchuuriki had).
We do know when the Whirlpool country was destroyed. If Kushina saw it as a child, that places its destruction within a certain time frame, even if the event isn't discussed in detail. Wars happen all the time in Naruto. Why is it necessary to enter into every single event with superfluous detail? Kushina's revelation explains to the reader how everything happened in the series and why it happened.
Disapproval of how things unfold doesn't make them plotholes.

Does't matter what gender they are, hot heads like Kushina tend to lose control of their emotions very easily. Tsunade nearly broke Jiraiya in half when she caught him peaking. Sakura has Megaton Punched Naruto a couple times when he pissed them off.
For other examples of women that lose control very easily, just look at any Tsundere character. Naru in Love Hina is a really good example.
We don't know if Kushina ever went to battle while using the Kyuubi: she was a very strong shinobi even without it's powers, and Minato was on her team right IIRC.
Also, don't forget that jinchuriki normally didn't leave the village, and when they did, they had specialized escorts (Naruto's is an exception due to his relationship with Tsunade), so she probably never needed to use it since Minato already wtfpwns most oponents easily.
Mito sealed it within herself to help her husband. Kushina was tested to have a powerful chakra she could even produce chains from it. Her being abducted is testimony that she is rare. I think it is very rare for a kyuubi host the best choices were female at the time.
Though the hokage could have applied more protection. He could have stayed. Minato wasn't prepared for war and what if the kyuubi did pop out they would need all the help necessary.
Maybe the male members of the clan didnt share the strong chakras suited for the supression of the ninetails. all we know for sure is that kushina and Mito were the only two seen as appropriate the house the ninetails. We also know that The Eddy village and the Uzumaki clan were wiped out when kushina was young because the fourth hokage claimed that she grew up without a village and as such should know that pain.
It could be that no one else was alive from the Uzumaki Clan that could have held the kyuubi and so she was chosen by default. However, I believe that she was purposely chosen because of her special chakras. Look at how she can easily dominate the kyuubi.
No other ninja in the manga has shown the ability to bitch slap the kyuubi so effortlessly. She is a great kunoichi. If naruto can become stronger than her, he'll be doing just fine.
Mito wasn't chosen to be the jinchuuriki. She chose to seal Kyuubi in herself to help out Hashirama. It was only Kushina that was chosen. It wasn't because she was a woman, rather it was due to her strong chakra, which she herself said was special. If there was a male with better chakra, he'd have been chosen instead of Kushina.
It's all about selecting who's the best candidate, nothing to do with gender. Especially after what happened or nearly happened with Mito, they wouldn't risk putting Kyuubi in a female without a good reason.
