Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

Well i really liked the first part of vinland saga but i found the slave arc(or whatever) really really boring. At first i thought it'll be only 3-4 chapters but its start to be really long.I wonder how many chapters we will wait before he start to fight for something again ( if he ever start to fight).

    I voted for standby. Farmland Saga has definitely been a little boring. And long. Ultimately it does feel like there is a point and I a may be look back with fond indifference to this arc. There were good parts too, of course. I wish he had at least shown a little of the action back in England. It wouldn't have hurt to cut scenes every once in a while. I'm also annoyed that the beginning of Farmland Saga was the exact moment we ended up launching the forum ^^;

I actually like it a lot. Yeah its a lot slower and there's no action but I still think its really interesting even if it is a tad slice o' life-y. Its a nice break from the constant frantic action at a break-neck pace that's been going on since the beginning. I'm probably being slightly biased since I only caught up with the farming part quite recently so I haven't really had to wait months on end while Einer and Thorfinn planted that wheat crop. It helps that I actually prefer passive Thorfinn over crazy-single-minded-stupid Thorfinn of olden times

Re: Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

It's fine imo, so I do like it. It is absolutely different from the "prologue"-part, but still interesting. And it really feels like the second part has only been introduced so far, but didn't yet pick up the pace which it will have soon.
It is quite sad to me that it certainly won't ever return to how it was before, but that happens with every story at some point.

Also, there were many important characters of part one which haven't been seen yet again. I'm sure they'll play a role again though and that's why I believe that the story will show more action soon.

I do understand that many readers might get a little annoyed when such a slowly progressing part is so long and chapters are being released only monthly. Yet I'm absolutely sure that this part will appear much better once it's completed. For the overall work, a temporary change of pace can be very good imo, and the second part still has great qualities. So once Vinland Saga will be completed -or at least progressed further-, it will feel like a better part than it does now.
Given that my predictions about this are right, I'ld even say that this is very well done by the authors. Constantly keeping up a great pace only to make every volume filled with action will appear worse than the current course of Vinland Saga in the end.

Re: Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

started to read yesterday and im sad now cuz i went trough it kinda too fast... now i need to wait for more (( But i rly love it from the start to the end of chap 71.

I must admit that maybe the tempo was a little bit slower in second part then in prologue, but it was interesting to see new faces like Snake or that old Iron man Maybe we see a little of war coming up there in the next few chaps

Re: Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

while reading the farm arc on a monthly basis it felt very unsatifying. i went back and read the whole farm arc until the latest chapter and i have a newfound appreciation for this manga. i loved part 1 but i love the second part on a whole other level.
the second part is just as much a battle as the first part its just that the fields, weapons and enemies have changed. i think this manga is much more appreciated when read in volumes rather than individual chapters.

on thing is for sure, once the manga gets over i am really going to relish reading it in one.

Re: Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

I may be the nutjob here, but i love this part even more than the part1. In fact, it saved this manga for me. I was starting to get choked with all those politics and kings, losing the initial beauty of this manga that lied in the normal ppl and in normal life. But i'm a little confused about the philosophical parts still.

The new arc lacked the pace it had in the previous arc but its understandable. Thorfinn's character is developing. The new arc is a ladder-step for Thorffin to hind himself a valid reason to live on. The new arc has a different feel and I like it. I can't say I like it more than the first part though.

Blah. Its been like a year and a half of farmland saga. I personally find it boring and tend to skip alot of pages. People argue that Thorfinn is getting character developement, but I disagree on this. It took like 10 chapters for him to Understand tools and the wisdom behind it. Its only really been the last... 3 or 4 chapters of him finally making progress. The last 2 have kind of gone absent minded it seems. Im definatly not enjoying the pace anymore. Im prayin we get a move on before I drop it, because the art is amazing and the story CAN be just as good.

Re: Do you like the second part of Vinland Saga?

I love Slave Arc. You know, many story writers just let characters change their mind or let them find a reason like "Yeah, I want to protect -blah blah- so I have to live..." and other shonen-like idiotic concepts (Yes, I'm reffering to you Fate/stay night VN. General idea and art are pure win, but actual plot and character developing are pure fail. I'm sorry fans, but I just needs something of opposite case. Which reminds me... I still haven't see anime or manga adaptation... nah, let's end this little offtopic.). What I want to say is that Yukimura's character developement is really well-thoughtout.

Take Thorfinn. He was happy little boy with loving family but then his father died by the hand of some filthy pirate. He was small and still naive child so he fell into despair and find his goal in that damn pirate, Askeladd. Then his goal disappeared and he became empty man, hatred was everything he had... and it was gone, just like that damn filthy pirate so Thorfinn fell once again into despair, but this time into true despair. He became an empty man. I think that if he hadn't met Einar in the Ketil's farm he would just keep cutting trees...
But Einar... He started to fill this empty man with emotions, beliefs and hopes. And Thorfinn began to think about life, about his father, about friendship, about his own acts which he did in the past and about true meaning of 'true warrior'. And old master slighty leads him on his way of small understanding.

Now that I think about it character developement is really foolish way to put it... It's not something which should be phrasing by this two words... I would call it... Yes, like I call the process of characters growing up in Planetes... It's simply 'life'. Nothing more and nothing less. I really love how Yukimura write Vinland Saga. I love Slave Arc. You know, every time I read Vinland Saga I'm telling to myself "This is 'my' manga. Vinland Saga is manga I've been searching for. Medieval age, Vikings, realism, great art, awesome story and really nicely done characters."

I'm sorry, It's long and probably very boring and maybe written like in "stupid fanboy" style. But I really love VS, still I'm not so stupid to tell that it's definitely best and everyone has to like it. I know that many (but many...) readers are complaining about pacing, but thats the one of aspect I admire. Yukimura write things in realistic way and you know... in life nothing happens in two days (well, you know what I mean)... like Thorfinn would be damned in misery and after he meets Einar he would claim his new goal instantly... keep this in shonen pretty please (I'm not ironic).

By the way, I love medieval and it can be realistic or fantasy, I don't care. I love Vikings, knights, mages, dragons etc. It's not like I hate sci-fi but stories from the past-like worlds are my true cup of tea. (Nah, I still love Planetes and especially Elfen Lied.) Just a little offtopic again.

EDIT: I wanted to ask, since I read some posts... Do you really read Vinland Saga because of fights? I personally read it because I find it perfect in every way and I don't mind if Yukimura would keep fighting from VS. Still I don't think that will happen. Thanks for eventual answers.

^ Nah i don't read it for fights. The fights were really good, but VS has better things to offer to its readers.

I liked this arc a lot...I always like unpredictable developments and this certainly was...and the art has definitely improved, which is good for characterization...

I would like to see details in how Thorfinn ended up on that farm though

I think those were already shown. We saw Thorfinn beeing sold as a slave, very likely as a result of Askeladd's actions, after all Thorfinn appeared as some kind of ally of his ultimately. Probably he was so broken down at that point that he didn't even bother defending anymore.

We might see details of that one day, as some form of flashback recapping his developement at that stage, but I think that is rather unlikely.

Farmland Saga is excellent. It's great seeing Thorfinn's character develop. Einar is awesome sauce.
Canute's rise to power and his kingdom building is fun to watch. It's a lot of setting up but it does
a darn good job of it. Since I know the pay off is gonna be brilliant it makes me like it even more.

    Respect the wheat.
