Gantz Origins
Oku Hiroya and SF Movie Stories
The Year is 1986.
This is the story of the young man who would one day create Gantz.
---
Ever since high school, I'd had a dream
A dream of joining a video rental shop
---
On the same day I joined, I decided to rent a porno (AV) and a regular movie
---
That's when I came across the film that changed my life
---

Chapter 1: Back to the Future
Down the Side:
Masterpiece Begets Masterpiece - An Encounter With a Fate-Changing Film
The series that sold over 15 million copies! Gantz volume 30 on shelves Wednesday, Jan. 19!
------------
The Gantz live-action film is almost here! Starring Ninomiya Kazunari and Matsuyama Kenichi. In theaters nationwide Saturday, Jan. 29!
Oku Hiroya
Bottom Left Bubble:
Even today, Oku-sensei keeps his eyes peeled for interesting films. Before he created Gantz, this extraordinary manga-ka found an extraordinary scifi movie! A time travel flick that's a masterpiece from the very first scene!
---

For my first porn, Kikuchi Eri's giant breasts sure made an impression on me
But that wasn't the movie that changed my life
---
I picked out Back to the Future on a whim
Because I remembered a friend of mine said it was good
---
It was the first video I ever rented
---
Now that I think about it, that's pretty lame
My first video rental was Back to the Future
---

I watched that part at the very beginning where Marty gets blown away by the giant speaker
And I remember thinking it had a good feel to it
---
I was kinda dumbfounded
I didn't know what this movie was even supposed to be about
---
And then this awesome car appears completely outta nowhere, right?
We're definitely building to something now
---
And holy crap! The car is a time machine!
Has a time machine ever been this cool before!? No way. Even today, there's still nothing that compares! It even leaves flames behind it after it disappears!!
---

Oh, check this out! This scene gave me goose bumps!!
You see this shot from the driver's seat
---
Then, just as they make the jump through time
The view through the windshield changes. It's so hyper-real!
---
The plot is that Marty travels back to the past and ends up falling in love with his own mother
But as things progress, he has to get his mom together with his dad, or else he won't be born
---
It was a total culture shock for me!!
It was so full of ideas! I'd never seen a movie this eager to entertain the audience! Is this Hollywood!?
---
Page 6
By the climax, I realized I'd been creeping closer and closer to my 14-inch TV screen
I shivered, I shouted, I sighed with relief
---
Some day, I want to make something like this!!
Hollywood rules!!
---
It introduced me to a fantasy world like no one had ever seen before!
It must've taken a lot of thought to make a fake reality that convincing!!
---
Page 7
If it hadn't been for this movie, my manga wouldn't have had the same style
Thank you, Back to the Future! Thank you, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale!!
*On the next page more in-depth info is revealed!!
---
Gantz may be a manga, but it's a manga designed to fit into the ranks of Hollywood films
But I won't be satisfied with a mere imitation! That's why I attempt to do things with it that Hollywood movies can't do!
