I wanted a place to discuss one of the biggest developed characters in Naruto. Lets review how he's grown and how much room he has

Ok well Shikamaru is one of the only characters to actually have a predetermined lover. Yes and we all know who it is and well for all we know they already tied the knot

Though the real reason I wanted to make this thread is to discuss his strategies. Firstly, how did he know that Hidan and Kakuzu were going to go exactly where his families forest. For a genius he sure got lucky. So, I'm hoping this doesn't become a flam thread of Shikamaru. Though I dont' think that'll be too hard since there are a lot of his fans in this forum so speak up.

Besides Kabuto, he's my favorite character. He definitely shows that power and strength isn't everything. He used his intelligence and analytical skills to beat Hidan.

Man, if Shikamaru had a larger chakra supply he'd definitely be a very strong Jounin (I predict him becoming one after this fight is over). His shadow techniques are probably some of the strongest techniques (especially the one that can bind the opponent's neck). That's probably the only thing a little bad about Shikamaru's fighting style: Limited chakra supply (His speed is good and no one can deny it. He friggin dodged Hidan's attack and was quick enough to place blood on the tip of the scythe).

Shika is just the greatest when it comes to using his brain and tricking his opponents into his plan without them finding out whats going on. Shika is by far one of the smartest ninja in konoha. Even thou he only has a handful of jutsus he knows how to make them work, and how to counter his opponents.
And with the lastest chpts, we can really see what Shika can do when he really gets fired up.

I don't think there is any reason to suspect that Shikamaru is married yet. Given his mysoginistic tendencies, I can't picture him running into wedlock so young.

Also, Hidan and Kakuzu ending up in his family's forest is just a rhetorical device. Clearly the likelihood of this happening is rather small given the size of their country and the randomness of the location where Hidan and Kakuzu could have re-entered the country. Shikamaru, if he were a real life genius, would have probably taken this into consideration and therefore formulated a strategy that didn't rely so much on the small possibility they would be battling Akatsuki on his ideal choice of battleground. But, Naruto is not a real story, and this was necessary in order for a relatively low ranking ninja to be able to defeat an S-rank criminal. That's all there is to it, because otherwise it makes no sense.

I would add to this thread's topic the potential Shikamaru has to become Hokage. This is based somewhat on my personal beliefs that Naruto is going to die at the manga's close (hence all the Yondaime comparisons.) If I am correct, Konohoa will have need of a proper Hokage from Naruto's generation, and I think that individual will be Shikamaru. He was the first to pass the Chunin exams, he successfully led a shotai unit against two of the most dangerous ninja in the land, and he has, as you pointed out in your romance comment, somewhat established diplomatic ties with another village. Additionally Asuma comes right out and says Shikamaru has this potential, and usually in a story such remarks aren't meant to be ignored. I definitely feel Shikamaru is one the only ninja besides Naruto unto their generation with the potential to lead Konohagakure

Well we don't really know how far Shikamaru walked Hidan to get to his clan's forest. Besides, Hidan told Shikamaru (after they were called back to do the Akatsuki sealing) that they'd be right back to finish them off, so you'd have to figure that Kakuzu and Hidan would return to around the same area they were when Asuma was slain. Anyway, I'm sure Shikamaru could of taken Hidan down without being in his clan. I mean if he just put a tag all around Hidan's face, then Hidan would be in a very sticky situation.

My personaly prediction about Hokage. Hmm, as long as Naruto has the Kyuubi inside him then I doubt he will be Hokage because he will be more of a threat. If Naruto can get the Kyuubi out of him without dying then yea he'll be Hokage. As long as someone like Sakura isn't Hokage, then I'm alright.

But, I think unless Shikamaru like fully masters the shadows and gets a title of "Master of the Shadows" or something, I don't think he'll be Hokage. Yea he can lead and has a lot of battle intelligence but he also needs the power. But I would love to see Shikamaru have more chakra capacity and fully mastering all shadow jutsus.

We don't know a lot specifically about Shikamaru's chakara reserves. We do know he repeatedly used his strongest jutsu against Hidan without fully tiring (i.e. hitting zero and dying.) Even as a child he was able to extend himself in the Konohoa invasion arc after battling in the chunin exam. So, with what little there is to go on, he seems hardy to me, at least as hardy as Sandaime.

Secondly, although we didn't see exactly how far he ran Hidan, we know it wasn't clear across the country. If you look at the scaled maps online, the Fire country is rather large, so running Hidan a mile or two essentially doesn't control the randomness of his plan. Like I said, it was just deus ex machina for a kid's story. But that's all right, Naruto rules regardless

Oh and I didn't mean tied the knot as married Temari but as in... well... he is 15/16. He's at the age where kids do start having sex. I know that its kinda taboo I suppose to mention this but I wouldn't be suprised if he slept with Temari. He's a guy she's a girl, she likes him and he likes her. He was her escort and well >.> if any character in Naruto was to have sex first it'd be him I believe. Ninjas are people too.

What I was getting at was that Shikamaru knew the area around where Kakuzu and Hidan would return. Kakuzu and Hidan said they'd return around the area where they had slain Asuma so Shikamaru took the location where they'd reappear into consideration and it happened to be near the forest but I'm sure he could of just brought Hidan to any secluded place, blown off his head and then carry his head back to Konoha. Like bind him with that Shadow Jutsu he used in the end and (if he didn't have access to all those tags), just use one or two tags, wrap them around Hidan's neck and then sever his neck with them.

I for one am convinced that shikamaru had many backup plans for every thinkable situation. We just saw one of them played out and we think it is a coincidence that he defeated hidan. I say It is not a coincidence neither is it luck, this was just one of many possible ways shika thought up to finish off this guy. Some times it would be nice to see people put a little creativity into understanding the plot as opposed to expaning all their available energy to find plot holes and things to critisize.

Perhaps the Nara's forest is very large. (Maybe the fire country's forest is the Nara's forest. Or most parts of it.) Shikamaru would had assumed that Hidan and Kakuzu would not head in the same direction again.
After Ino had found those two, Shikamaru would had been able to plan better. They may had let Hidan&Kakuzu travel further, closer toward where Shikamaru plan/wants them to arrive at.

I don't think Shikamaru has low chakra. More like medium?
He could be faking that makes it seem like he has low chakra. (Which I believe he did during his fight against Hidan.)
Or that he doesn't use his chakra down to a very low point. Always leave enough to do a few more jutsus.

I don't think we're not criticizing the plan that played out? At least I myself isn't trying to. Just discussing, and trying to analyze/understand what happened and why..


Shikamaru has the potential to become a Hokage, but he wouldn't and shouldn't because... I don't see him actually taking on the Hokage role. Too lazy? Need some kind of KO technique?
