Or because it is the only dog we have seen so far in the story (at least who played a minimum of a role for a dog)

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

There really shouldn't be a complaint about art unless they're complaining that there is way too much detail compacted into each page and they prefer white background inkspills, and characters getting stabbed in the back images, proportional well drawn titties that take up the oh so valuable page count of WSJ manga's like Kubo Tite does. That's not really an insult towards Tite since there are people that really do prefer that type of artstyle over Oda's. There is a lot going on in the art for One Piece per chapter but I find that it is still way more organized than lets say Katekyo Hitman Reborn that has a lot going on artwise, but it lacks imagination and organization that I could careless about what's going on.

yeah, but as someone who happened to start with the anime, realising early on that the creators' idea of a soppy cliched storyline was a dog that sounded like a small child being stamped on every time it opened its mouth was one of the promising things that kept me watching..

ah wait, (only read the whole thing twice (lies) 3 times so far) there was a sea-king that looked like a poodle.. and a 3-headed zombie.. and a dog made of magma. Garp's ship if it counts.. some kind of giant sky-dog.. probably more..
waaaaa if someone was reading One Piece just for the dogs they would be satisfied I think this is still on topic for the art thread.

But yeah, as discovered by accident, the proportion of porn that turns up if you image-google Jewellry Bonney proves Oda's boob-drawing quota for each week is well-spent..

What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

Answer: None. It's perfect. If you don't think it is, just keep reading One Piece and you will see.

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

Most mangas today you can quite literally put characters from one manga into another and have the artistic style/feel of that manga itself not change one bit. Ie. Bleach and Naruto. But that cannot be done with One Piece. The character and environment design is far too unique for its time. I like Oda's "old school" art style if you will far more then the generic manga art style of today.

One Piece is a series created by a genius, it's a masterpiece, it's like a fine wine, it only gets better with time.

Oda's art style is rather unique compared to most manga. While it isn't as detailed as some art I've seen, (though that too is improving), the art style fits One Piece to a T.

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

The problem as many said is about the character designs, however there was another good comment that early OP is lacking in backgrounds and it's a bit empty, well, compared to current OP...
So people who complain about the art and who are dropping OP because of the art, haven't had the chance to see the art improving IMO...

Anyway...I don't like the art either...however I admit that it is rich, sometimes overwhelmingly so, but still the style is something that's just doesn't appeal to me...also don't get me wrong, I'm not secretly, or in any subtle way try to compare OP with the other big 2...there are other mangas out there as well

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

No one can deny that OP has fantastic background art, that's pretty much what I like about One Piece's art, however the background art can be way too messy. The rest is pretty average for me personally (meaning how characters are drawn). Keep in mind that like I said it's my subjective taste. The art is not One Piece's forté, that's the story. Other manga have it the other way around, or a mixture of both. I don't really have a real problem with One Piece's art, that's not why I read the manga in the first place. I'm rather indifferent about it, and sometimes I'm in awe of the background/area art. However what I do have a problem with is that Oda's art is sometimes too messy. He puts in so much in the backgrounds that it sometimes is hard to map out everything that is going on in the panels, that is for me personally one of the most annoying things about manga as manga is most of all a visual experience. When your visual experience gets downgraded it's rather annoying. Luckily this doesn't happen often anymore.

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

LOL, and it's THAT reason that makes me love OP over the rest. You have to stop and pay attention to every panel to really realize what happened. And even so, when there is something important, Oda uses well the resources of literacy and cinema using short planes and always giving the character the focus required plot-wise.
The mess around then only adds verisimilitude.

    The wind is blowing
    The sea looks red,
    a surging sea of flames
looks like the entrance to hell

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

Just as Uriel mentioned, Odacchi put's easter eggs like Pandaman in nearly every chapter, if not all, for the readers to search for. And it's not like he draws everything, I would love to see some of his assistents draw a one-shot/manga themself for once. At least he highlights moving objects and characters with a whte border.

EDIT: Oda on the pace, panel size and background

Oda: Yes, it is (laughs). I don't know, but I just can't help but draw a lot. The weekly format is set at 19 pages, but from the creator perspective I want to move the story along faster. I end up jamming as much as I can in there. There is also wanting to finish faster so I can relax.
    ....
Oda: I'm probably living in haste. My panels get smaller and smaller, and I don't draw unnecessary panels. My scenes are all jam packed. First of all, there are too many characters (laughs). The story is mainly about only 5 characters, but there are so many things I want to do that it ended up being the way it is now.
    _______
•••• I think one thing that you two have in common is that you strive to draw your comics to convey something you really want to say.
Oda: I know my images are extremely busy, but I really feel compelled to draw everything that's in there. Even if it’s in the way or whatever, it’s like, “This is the sound I’m hearing now!”
    _______
Oda: ... In any case, my One Piece serial is everything to me. When it’s done, I think I can begin my real life (laughs).
Inoue: What? You mean it isn’t now?
Oda: Right now I live for my readers. [ ]

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

Yes at times oda s art get messed up, but i think he draw it with a very free mind concentrating on story rather than details in the background or as one said before.. spilling inks on white background
For example, in gorosei's thread, people were trying to speculating the symbol shown in background of gorosei here http://www.mangareader.net/103-2340-...apter-233.html and here http://www.tenmangas.com/chapter/One.../209164-2.html.. however i dont see if oda has even tried to maintain the similarity in the two image for readers to speculate anything...

However when it comes to making characters.. woah i love oda.. whenevr a character is shown in manga its so traceable even 600 chapters back if it has been drawn by oda... small details like sabo s cup in luffy s flashback been shown .. and appearance of brook when laboon was introduced.. rayleigh been shown before as part of rogers crew,, and many more

True that Trafalgar Law. One of the many things I've noticed about One Piece is that you don't see these characters or settings anywhere else.

I'll agree with that. I also find the background art in OP to be amazing but sometimes there is a lot going on. The reunion of the Straw Hat crew is a perfect example. I have to be honest, I skimmed like five, seven, maybe nine chapters because there was so much going on in the scenes that it was hard to follow. My reaction was screw it. Let's just move this along until they're all on the ship and they've set sail.

Jigglies! Forget creativity, this is how Kubo sells Bleach.

The DOA effect right? I mean it worked for Tecmo, why not Kubo.

True. I'm reading KHR now and I've noticed that the backgrounds tend to range from lifeless to cluttered, especially in the fight scenes.

i have no problem with his art what so ever, i'd say his is better than most mangaka's where all there characters have the same face and body structure

Re: What exactly is the problem with Oda's Art?

Great variety, lots of details, but characters often look a bit ugly-ish. It's a matter of style as well, and when it comes to manga art, Oda doesn't rank pretty high in my book. However, I honestly couldn't care less about the drawings as the story and just the spirit of the whole manga is so awesome that I can't possibly hold anything against it. I even think that if his style were to be different, as in neatly drawn, proportionate, whatever characters we see in most modern mangas - it would lose its ... hmm spice. It just wouldn't be the same and a lot of the humor would drop out with it...
