    Oh. Good topic

There are so many manga tropes my brain is locking up. What about the friendly rival? Starts out as a competitor but when the real bad guys show up becomes the hero's ally. Isshida and Renji in Bleach come instantly to mind.

    Re: your favorite trope(s) ?

I love how Ouran Host Club blew up all the old shojo tropes: the reverse harem, twincest, the prince, the megane, the stoic, and the shota. The early chapters and anime were particularly brilliant parody.

Another trope: the plucky under dog. Every Jump action hero starts off as one, the weak guy every one underestimates but always wins through hard work and perseverance. The plucky underdog is friendship, ambition, achievement personified. It's almost shocking to read action from other magazines, where the heroes often start relatively strong and less is made of there underdog status.

This pretty sums up my favourites
I'd also include Ensemble Darkhorse and Large Ham on my list along with Ho Yay and Foe Yay.

    Cherry-blossoms

Quote Originally Posted by from tvtropes
A common symbolic element in anime and other Japanese media, falling sakura petals have several interconnected meanings, depending on who they are falling on and the context thereof. Cherry trees bloom en masse in early spring, usually in the month of April, but the white-to-coral petals shed and rot very quickly and the peak bloom is only a week or two. There is a celebration called hanami associated with the peak bloom, which often entails picnics and drinking with old friends under the cherry trees.

Sakura season is thus a highly visible sign of spring, the beauty of nature, renewal of life, and first love...but can also represent the transiency and fragility of beauty, life, and love. Since the meanings are highly romantic, the sakura motif is especially common in media aimed to the shoujo audience.

Japanese mythology often also connects cherry blossoms with death; a legend goes that originally, the flowers of the tree were white; after a body was buried beneath it, the petals turned pink. Anime will sometimes take this further, putting a body beneath a cherry blossom and turning the petals a deep red. (The fact that they last, at most, two weeks is a more mundane contribution to the symbolism.) When it doesn't show any romantic subtext, it can simply be used for a nice Scenery Porn.

As the Japanese academic year begins in April and ends in March, scenes of graduation from high school or the coming of a new transfer student are often given atmosphere with a liberal sprinkling of cherry blossoms in the air. In this context, sakura evokes both the "new beginning" of spring and the transiency of passing from one stage of life to another.

Sakura also happens to be a somewhat common name for women and men in Japan, and as such, characters in anime and video games will often show up bearing the name, such as in Naruto, Street Fighter, Cardcaptor Sakura (natch), and even Command And Conquer. See Sakura Girl for the full list. See also Petal Power for attacks that actually use Cherry Blossoms.

    Examples in Anime/Manga

And also the use of cherry blossoms. Even the opening song is about cherry blossoms.

You can't have a good romantic anime without cherry blossoms falling in slow motion! 5CM Per Second is even named after the speed cherry blossoms fall.

    Re: your favorite trope(s) ?

If you're talking about tropes in Ouran, then how could you possible miss out the cross-dressing trope, Kaiten? Hatori Bisco is the queen of that trope, what with both Ouran and HanaKimi involving a girl cross-dressing as a boy in school and spending much of the series trying to avoid getting found out, and the hilarity that ensues as a result

And yeah, cherry blossoms are a common accompaniment to either romance or the changing of seasons. Must have something to do with the color of cherry blossoms, and the shape of their petals And 5 cm/s made wonderful use of the cherry blossom imagery.

^ Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hanakimi) is by Hisaya Nakajo, not Hatori Bisco...

    Re: your favorite trope(s) ?

Oh, you're right! Now how did I manage to mix them up ... I was sure Hatori Bisco did another gender-swapping/cross-dressing manga... Obviously I was mistaken

Anyway, so as to make this post more on-topic Another trope I... Well I'm not sure if I can say I like it, but it is definitely a common one. The girly+vain boy. We've seen them everywhere and Yumichika in Bleach is the first that comes to mind for me

In the same vein, there is also the tomboy. I guess as a tomboy myself (sort of anyway), I tend to like them Again coming from Bleach, there's Tatsuki.

Breaking the fourth wall is one of my favorites. Adachi is the king of it, especially in Cross Game in H2. References about himself, promoting old series, adding random panels of himself.

She never did another cross dressing manga but Millennium Snow had vampires! I won't call it my favorite but vampires are definitely a trope.

My favourite trope is Lampshade Hanging. I love it when the series is self-aware enough to look at itself from a 360 degree view. That's why on a similar note, I also like Breaking the Fourth Wall. The funniest trope is Large Ham. As for characters, I like pairs who are in the Boke and Tsukkomi Routine.
