does Shonen Jump accept work from people living outside Japan?

Hi everyone... I am interested in writing some manga for Shonen Jump and, since i live in India wanted to know if they would accept my work. I have heard elsewhere that they do not even bother to read work from other countries and would like to know if this is true. Also, if they are willing to accept my work, I would like to know if i could apply screentones and effects digitally as they need a manuscript... so would scanning the image and applying screentones and effects digitally be alright or not?

We had this discussion already, only in some other forum. Basically.

If you don't live in japan & and speak fluently in japanese, your chances of becoming a mangaka (espicially for WSJ) are... 'bout 0.0001%

If i find the thread i'll link it here.

P.S. Don't get to worked up over this. I too had this dream of becoming a mangaka... before reading bakuman

I seriously don't know if it is the real one or some troll but the editor in chief from WSJ supposedly started tweeting:

As for submission to our manga prize from overseas, we do accept them, but sorry, only in Japanese for now.

I also dreamed of one day publishing my very own manga series in Jump. Then Bakuman and gave me a reality check. Of course the series exaggerates in some aspects, but it's pretty hard to get your work published in the magazine. If you really plan on publishing your series in Jump, I suggest you learn Japanese (and not just the basics, you need to understand humour and other factors), work really hard on your artwork (like Saiko did/does), study other series to understand pace and panel placement, and then move to the country. I'm sure it's possible to publish a series without moving, but it would be pretty hard considering that you need to meet with your editor frequently, not to mention hire assistants (which according to Bakuman seems to be the editor's responsibility). It's probably much easier to became an illustrator and find someone else (preferably Japanese) to write the story. I still plan to one day work on a graphic novel/comic at least. Perhaps I'll publish a one-shot ?

It isn't "supposedly", it's real Check out the English Shounen Jump website. His twitter is featured there, which means it's genuine. Of course, it may not really be him tweeting (he may be too busy and it could just be a publicity thing, where actually it's some lowly secretary or something actually doing the tweeting, who knows), but the content should be accurate since it is the official twitter.

In other words, it is unfortunate but overseas works are not accepted unless they are in Japanese

Nonsense, you just need to be good.
It's not like publishers decide who to publish by picking someone with their eyes closed, they choose the most talented and skillful people. (Although after Swot, Meruhen, and Lock On, I'm starting to doubt that...)

this really sucks because there really is no other magazine like WSJ in the world their are plenty of companies that publish manga but none like WSJ.

Well instead of focusing primarily on Japanese manga, someone who's serious about publishing their ideas can look into their countries comic industry. There are plenty of publishers who will help promote a new idea. If it's popular locally you might even be able to get publishing deals in other countries/languages from their network of connections.

And to be fair, unless you're writing the next Dragon Ball Z or coming up with the next Pokemon, trying to find a publisher outside your home country is going to be a lot more difficult, especially without a track record in your own country.

Start small and try to work your way up the food chain.

Re: does Shonen Jump accept work from people living outside Japan?

Although it doesn't hurt to try to submit your work to Shounen Jump, as someone already mentioned, it would first be best to focus on your local comic industry. If you manage to sign a deal and you can first "strike it big" in your country, then there will be better chances of expanding to other countries.

It is admittedly true though that it would have to take immense talent for a Japanese manga company to even think about going through the hassles of working with a foreign comic writer when they have so many in their own country who not only speak the language but who already know the ins and outs of the manga industry in Japan (from having attended manga schools & working as assistants to major mangakas).
