I'm going to recommend Gintama too. It's really funny but still has good action.
Another comedy anime I like is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The TV series is complete although they are making some OVAs.
Hikaru no Go is a good serious anime that was not on your list. It does not sound too interesting from summaries, but the characters are what really make it interesting.
If you guys are still alive, here is the movie;
Here is a link for DL. Shamo.
I used to watch a little anime about 3 years ago but now completely read manga.
So, I would like some recommendations on classic, really really good or must watch anime. I don't care what genre (except bad mainstream ecchi/shounen ones).

Thanks guys for the replies. I think im set for serious anime. Any suggestions for really good slice of life or comedy ones?
I remember back in maybe 2002 or 2003 there was a dub of this anime I had an fascination with.
There was a main character who was a guy who was able to pilot this type of robot that originally only girls could pilot. And he's like protecting his city or somewhere with the other girls who can pilot the robots as well.
ONe thing i really remember is that there's a very hentai scientist who gave the guy a suit that makes him look like a girl complete with fake boobs too =D
anybody know what it is I've always liked it but i can't remember the name.
it was "Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure" its an alternate dimension tenchi muyo series
ya it is THANK YOU so much Atma you're awesome.
np its one of my fav 'lol' series i had rewatched it a few weeks ago lol
...with ships like those in Star Wars. Basically a space opera that is realistic and good, where we follow the character through training. Does such an anime even exist or is there only mecha? Only Space Opera I have watched was Macross Frontier up to ep 9 yesterday, but it was sort of boring. I also require that it looks like it was made this century, so no bad animation. I remember watching Cowboy Star (and liking it), but it wasn't Space Opera.
On another note any fighting anime that doesn't have a manga will also be welcomed.
You didn't like Macross? Well that's a surprise. Taking Mecha off of the list makes it much harder...
Uh...What about Tytania or anything by Leiji Matsumoto(Space Battleship Yamato in particular) should work.
