I think had he been killed Kishi would have brought back THAT murderer with Edo Tensei I feel. Since Manga's absolutely abuse the suspense technique known to us foreigners as ''Anokata'' mean ''THAT PERSON''. ''That technique'' and ''That person'' has been rinsed in this manga lol.

a lot of interesting theories here, but it says in his wiki that he was one of many casualties of the numerous wars with various tribes, clans and villages that were forming all around the newly founded leaf village.

We may see a flashback that has something definitive, but according to that (however true or not it may be) it was not one person, but many talented people, similar to the second raikage, who fought with an entire army to defend a weakness in his village and eventually died after days of fighting with unending waves of powerful ninja. Perhaps he was diminished as well due to the madara fight though.

This has been said here before, and was agreed it very unlikely as they are shown happy together in the photo with the Team Tobirama and the 1st Hokage in one photo when Hiruzen Sarutobi was a child.

Not impossible lol, it could be, but look at how honourable he seemed when he offered his life and handed the title of Hokage to Hiruzen on that mission. Did that guy seem like the guy to murder his brother?

Hashirama died young. So a heart attack is unlikely.

I don't think it is anyone that has been introduced yet, otherwise it would of been mentioned. So my best guess would be one or several of the deceased Kage. All the very 1st Kage, and the 2nd Kazekage have not been introduced yet, so any of them would be the best guess I reckon.

Tobi is Hashirama who has lost faith in humanity after witnessing the villages waged war against each other following the event in which he willingly gave away the tailed-beasts to all the villages equally. Later, he found out about Madara who was then still alive after the fight at the Valley of the End.

In exchange for the Sharingan from Madara, Hashirama gave away his cells which were subsequently cultivated and transplanted by Madara onto his own body. Transplanting the sharingan grants Hashirama the space-time technique, similar to how Kakashi obtained his following his own transplant of Obito's eye. Meanwhile, with the help of Hashirama's cells, Madara managed to evolve his EMS into Rinnegan. However, he didn't manage to live to the present day. Before dying, he gave the Rinnegan to Hashirama in exchange of Hashirama's promise that one day he would perfect the Rinne Tensei technique and resurrect Madara (because he knew that being a Senju, Hashirama would likely outlive him).

Present Day: Hashirama (now Tobi) begins his quest of unifying the whole world under one person (Moon Eye's plan), as he had since lost faith in the villages' ability in co-existing peacefully (even with all the tailed beasts being divided equally among them). But he didn't resurrect Madara, so when Kabuto summoned out the secret coffin he was unpleasantly surprised. Continuing with his own quest, he now races against time to defeat Naruto before Madara can find a way to break free from Edo Tensei (Maybe through Izanagi).

P/s: The Hashirama sealed inside Shinigami's belly was an eternal Mokuton clone. Lulzz.
