Is the Film an alternative Ending?
yes, since the anime is an auter anime, the story is completely different.
It is, you might want to read this:
Like the manga that inspired it, the film follows a magic academy's young teacher and his all-female class. The film is part of a double feature with Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven is a Place on Earth, and the two films will open together on Saturday.
Akamatsu had planned the film's story as another official version — "version B" or "another true ending" — of Negima's final manga chapter, and he said that the film retains that plot outline. However, he added that the story is a little difficult to follow, particularly in the first half, because the explanation of part of the story's premise had been left out.
Akamatsu suggested that movie-goers remember a simple summary of the story and note the announcement of changes on the film's site. In particular, he suggested that people remember three points: "Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony," "When the Probationary Pactio ends, only one person must be chosen as the partner under the Permanent Pactio," and "The classmates who are not part of the Permanent Pactio will lose all their memories of magic the next morning."
Auter anime? The other OVA did follow the manga though. :P
oops auteur anime, wrong spelling:
From the little that I watched (the first episode, and bits from others), the "OVA" does not much follow the manga, unless there's two anime series we are talking about. After watching the first episode, and I was like, "Screw this, going back to the manga". The rest of the bits where from looking at stuff from youtube, like the baka rangers sequence and some other cameos and memes.

The first one: Mahou Sensei Negima! did follow the original, while the remake from next year had an original plot: Negima!?. The OVA follow the manga storyline, are sequels to the first series though, as they all are based on their adventures around the magus world.
Here's the relation graph. http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=rel&aid=5868

hello, I am French, and translation of your discussion are bad! And I a big fan of Negima, and Natsumi is my favorite character! What will happen there with Kotaro?? She will keep her memory??
I apologize for the bad translation!
---------- Post added at 01:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:43 AM ----------
I do not understand the meaning "Surprisingly (to me, at least) Natsumi x Kotaro fans get a treat in the form of a meaningful discussion between the two, analyzing the weight and meaning of memories and the trial the students have to face. Kotaro and philosophy?"
He/She is wondering why the little kid Kotaru get's into a deep discussion about philosophy: the importance of dreams.
so we get the hayate movie all over the place, but not Negima Final??? T_T
Because it's not out yet, that questions was autoanswering, if there were, you would find some RAW out there. It will be included with a limited manga edition in the next couple months.
there was a hint of sarcasm in my post, some places report an august 2011 release, others say 2012, some say because of the issues the release was pushed back, others say its out already~
Time is nearing. annoys me greatly that i forgot to preorder this. damnit.
