WSJ Pirate Weekly Shonen Jump [2011 - 2012] - Discussion and TOC Talk

    What is the ToC ranking?
ToC stands for Table of Contents. It's found on the last page of every issue of WSJ, but more importantly, the order the series appear in on the ToC is closely related to the popularity of the series. This is determined by polling the readers; there is a polling postcard in every issue of WSJ.

    Some exceptions etc:
    - For the 2nd-8th chapters, TOC is already decided, though it could change depends on readers' ranking.
    - The TOC is affected by the popularity of 8 chapter ago.
    - Shueisha's aiming their main target as elementary and junior high school students, thus, their votes weigh probably more than others (fangirls).

When did a series need to have strong sales to be popular? Those times are long gone.^^ And it's a vote of all those voted[>1% if numbers are true], not all readers so it will never present the complete opinion. Even if I'm not the target audience to some or they just don't appeal to me, I see why e.g. Reborn is up there.
i expected it to be the biggest because of how populer it is not because how much i liked it. and ever since arancer bleach has been tangling so it wasnt just the fullbring arc that made me drop it...though it did give it a heavy push.

Random question!! :) Since Hungry Joker won that competition (forgot the name XD), does that mean that it will become a series in Jump? Thanks in advance ~

I think it'll become a series on next spring at earliest.

Serialization is part of the prize for winning the Gold Future Cup. As Negative Syndicate said, it is likely to come in the spring, as all past winners did.

Is it really part of the prize? The likelyness of getting serialized is very high, like 99%,but not quaranteed. That's what I always thought.

It's not part of the prize; it is the prize. Golden Future Cup is not a competition about getting the prize money like Treasure Award.

    A thing.
For the 8 chapter rule the exact Kurogane's first rank shouldn't be this one in Jump #47 with chapter 9? At least if we follow the Nayrael scheme:

    Naruto 560 - 8 = 532
    Bleach 469 - 8 461
    One Piece 643 - 8 = 635
    Kurogane 8 - 8 = 0 (?)

    Just to say.
I don't believe in the complete reliability of this rule.

it's not a sure fire way to figure out the exact ranking of each chapter but it does give us a pretty good general idea of how a series is doing week by week. Chapter 8 showing the first ranking of Kurogane is based of an 8 week ranking system where the ranking of the chapter 8 chapters ago COUNTING THE CURRENT CHAPTER is. Others like to do what you are saying and go back 8 chapters not counting the current one. I prefer the former way but that might just be because that's how it was introduced to me over at LiveJournal *shrugs*

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

All the time I have always seen chapter 9 as the first ranked. This time, for Kurogane, the 8th.
Mine was just an observation. Like I said I don't think that this rule is an exact science

I was always under the impression that the 9th chapter is when the rank for the 1st chapter is shown, if you use the rule that is.
    It was fabulous max.

They don't get any money for their trouble?

I'm not sure if the mangakas get money for releasing their one shot in magazine (isn't mangaka get money based on tank sales?).

Also, I don't think the one shots from GFC gets special treatment as compared to other one shot line-ups. All of mangakas, especially newbies, try very hard to make serialization for GFC, and I don't like the one shots don't get anything because they didn't put their work in GFC. I think only special treatment that GFC winner going to get is they have much higher chance to get serialized as compared to other one shots.

I'm fairly sure (from Bakuman) that the mangakas get paid per page as well as by tank sales and the senior mangaka earn more money than the new mangaka. Also I don't think serialization is an official prize of the GFC, it is just given that whatever oneshot wins will get serialized. I don't think that it is 100% guaranteed that the winner will get serialized, but all of the previous winners have been so I would say it's safe to assume The Hungry Joker will be also.
