Naruto/Sasuke rivarly isn't taken from Dragonball, but from Slam Dunk.

Naruto is the one who is at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak, like Hanamichi Sakuragi, while Sasuke is the genius, the most talented one, the dark, broody and fascinating loner like Kaede Rukawa.
Like Hanamichi, Naruto has no luck with womens, is "hated" for his loudy and idiotic appereance which is likely a mask for hiding his tragic past ( Hanamichi lost his father, while Naruto's story everyone knows ).
Naruto makes Sasuke his rival in an one-sided rivarly, like Hanamichi does with Rukawa, since his object of affection loves Sasuke ( Haruko, in Slam Dunk, is Hana's crush but loves Rukawa which, like Sasuke, do not return her affections ).
Same as Hanamichi and Rukawa, Sasuke and Naruto both doesn't stand the other apparently, yet they aknowlegde and rely on him, culminating, when they cooperate, in a mind-blowing teamwork.

1. Goku and Naruto both fought (and are fighting) the villains who were responsible for the death of their fathers.

Note: They also both transformed during this fight. Goku turned into a super saiyan for the first time and naruto took his kyuubi power to a new level.

2. Rikodu sennin and the first super saiyan are both being spoken of in the same manner in the beginning. (as if they are myths)

3. naruto and orochimaru stared at eachother for 50 minutes in a special anime episode and goku vs freeza's 5 minute battle took a 7 or something episodes......

4. Powerful people in dragon ball z pushing an opponent away with their ki reminds of me shinra tensei

5. Rock lee and the saiyans both used an added weight training although not really that similar

6. Both series had fighting tournaments that were interrupted

And there is probably more, or is this just character comparison?

Vegeta and Sasuke are completely very different in a number of ways.

Sasuke's motivation for everything is for revenge, he wants to avenge his family.

While Vegata served Freiza is ultimate goal wasn't revenge, it was power.

And whereas Sasuke has become controlled and lost his marbles, becoming irrational and controlled by revenge, Vegeta was the opposite. Vegeta was always thinking, he was incredibly intelligent and never let things get out of control he when Babbadi (sp0 controlled him, Vegeta's sheer will was too much. He said something along the lines of (you may take my body, my mind, my spirit, but you'll never take my pride!) Vegeta was much more prideful than Sasuke although it is something they both have in common.

Sure they have similarities, but that is only because they are both antagonistic characters and villains at different points.

I agree: I thought about their similarities too,but I ended up realizing that they are very different. VEGETA is proud,the proudest! sasuke is just an idiot who wants revenge. I think a character like VEGETA isn't in anymanga,not even in OP,Hokuto no Ken or Slam Dunk (Rukawa).

I think Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk similiarites in any shounen manga are to be expected.
The two of them are in JUMP's Top10 most successful ever so I guess it would be a good thing to have similarities to the two.

I think the biggest difference between Sasuke and Vegeta is that Sasuke is Naruto's rival and not the other way around like Vegata and Goku. Goku was always stronger than vegeta and in the end of the manga blew his power lvl out of the water. While Naruto might currently be more powerful Sasuke will without a doubt catch up. So much about naruto's life, motivation, and story has been about his rivalry with sasuke. Goku could give a hot damn if vegeta died or not...well he would care but he wouldn't do this ---> Now thats what i call love

Some of the OP's points are valid, but others are unrelated to DBZ or are just standard shonen tropes, or are generally reaching.

Also missed the really obvious direct reference: The four-tails is a great ape named Son Goku and his host is named Roshi. Goku also owned the four-star dragon ball.

Regarding "6. Judgement Similarities." -- Yama is a figure from mythology that appeared in both DB and Naruto. He also appeared in Yu*Yu*Hakusho, which was another inspiration for Kishimoto (Kurama is inspired by and named after a YYH character).

Regarding Naruto / Sasuke / Sakura, that's the typical three-man setup for a shonen series. Naruto is the hero, Sasuke is the lancer, Sakura is the heroine. It's fairly common for lancers to do a face-heel turn (turn evil).

eeeeexactly! every mangaka admits that he takes inspiration from AKIRA TORIYAMA ,and there are a lot of references to Slam Dunk as well.

these two series could not be any less similar, i have read every chapter of naruto and the rivalry between sasuke and naruto is NOTHING like kakarot and vegeta

well DBZ was a hit around the world. so why not make something different but can remind us about DBZ. so kishi make naruto that look like DBZ is some similar ways.

naruto see sasuke as a rival.
vegeta see goku as a rival.
but in this situation naruto is vegate who have more energy then goku. but naruto got goku stamina who make him the fusion of both.

imo,one piece is more similar to DRAGON BALL than naruto. the main character is an idiot but is the strongest man (luffy and goku) amongst those who are around him. whereas naruto and slam dunk have got a main character who is an idiot,but who will become the strongest at the end.

That's true, however, Kishimoto HAS talked about the influences of other works on Naruto.

Naruto wears orange because of Goku did, and the Four Tails and Roshi were based loosely on Goku and Muten Roshi.

A lot of Naruto's abilities are based on the character Fusuke from the manga Ninku.

Sasuke is based partially on the character from the manga Sasuke, by Sanpei Shirato.

Kishimoto said he got the idea of the Kyuubi from Yu Yu Hakusho, which he named after Kurama.

Gaara's base transformation seems to be based on Tetsuo from Katsuhiro Otomo's manga and anime film Akira. Kishimoto has also said that Akira is his favorite movie of all time.

He's taken inspiration from various novels, including the The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya, Journey to the West, and The Koga Ninja Scrolls.

There are many ideas taken from Japanese and Buddhist mythology in the series.

He takes inspiration from many different movies. For example, some of his costume designs were inspired by The Matrix.

He also emulates the styles of different directors, including Takeshi Kitano and Quentin Tarantino.

The manga series Akira, Jin-Roh, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninku were all major influences on his art style, as Kishimoto used to read them over and over and copy the scenes and characters to practice drawing.

Those are all true facts about Kishimoto's inspiration not just on Naruto, but as an artist.


The series also follows several tropes that are typical of the shonen genre and ninja stories, which are not direct references to anything. Sasuke's personality, style, design, and abilities are all part of the standard "lancer" character archetype, for example.

Why must every shounen-action manga be compared to Dragonball Z? It's tiresome, boring, and demonstrates a total lack of imagination. Dragonball comparisons are analysis at it's laziest and least creative. Can we all agree to retire cliche Dragonball Z parallels in favor of cliche JoJo's comparisons? Hoshin Engi comparisons are cool too but not to many noobs have heard of that one.
