Collective Reading of NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND by Hayao MIYAZAKI

Are you interested on reading (or rereading) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by the great Hayao Miyazaki? Would you like to read and share your comments and impressions with others? Then you are very welcome; this is the thread for it. We will be reading and commenting that comic since now, April 9th/13, and for the next weeks.

As a note on this initiative, some days ago the project Collective reading of an Old (complete) good comic began. A group of members decided to participate, nominate and vote some old comics considered classics in the genre. We started some weeks ago with the reading of Planetes by Makoto Yukimura. That was the most voted comic. The second one was Nausicaä, and this is the thread for its collective reading.

In the collective reading of Planetes we were using an schedule which was 2 volumes per week. From that experience we could know that the schedule is not necessary. We only have to use spoiler tags on the comments we are posting, with a little title indicating what chapter or volume our comment is about, like either of these ones:

Using this format we won't need to agree about a concrete schedule for the reading, and everyone will be free to read at his own pace. Our reading will be collective because since April 9th and during the following weeks, we will be a group of people reading the same manga and commenting on it.

Also this format will protect your reading from spoilers you don't want to read about chapters you haven't read yet.

The movie only covers 2 of 7 volumes. So look forward to it, they're fantastic. Wish they'd get animated as well at some point.

The movie was great by itself, from the perspective of it being an adaption, it was not that good since the manga is so much better. I hope many people will participate in reading this.

Didn´t you feel that the movie is somehow incomplete, especially towards the end?

Like i said, without having the manga background, the movie is actually quite good. The manga on the other hand is a masterpiece.

Ok, I will read the last two volumes I bought in US, since the brazilian publisher (bastards) dropped this series in volume 5.

Bastards. But so far for the 5 volumes I've read this is one great masterpiece. It has, in my opinion, somewhat of an european drawn style.

As a kid, Miyazaki used to watch lots of Russian movies and shows, which influenced his drawing style (just look at old those old people with long beards).

I am all ready to read and watch it... Thanks to ukimix signature i got here.. Saw the wiki page and it has the cover of second volume... I could not help but notice that the anime movie's "Kiki's delivery service" Kiki character design was very similar to the girl in the cover and thus went back and checked to find out that the writer and director of kiki's delivery service is also Hayao Miyazaki ...

I don´t know what you have planned but i would propose the similar schedule, namely 2 volumes per week. The first 6 volumes have an average of 150 pages per volume while the last one, the seventh, has 230 pages, so it would be logical to split it up that way.

We used the schelude-way in the reading of Planetes, with no much comments. I wonder if the few comments had to do with the schelude for posting comments: "I have this comment but I can't post it now because of the schedule, etc..." So lets try to do this second reading with out schelude to see if it works for better. I'm proposing it, in the first post: to use the format with spoiler tags to comment volumes or pages. That will give people the freedom to comment when they pleases to do, and it will serves the same purpose of the schedule in giving the people the chance to read the comments they please to read.

Just finished reading volume 1. Here's a brief thought of mine, rather, my impression on the volume generally.

Okay, this is my second time reading this volume but then since it's been a long time ago, reading this still brought awe to me. Especially the world building that Miyazaki did. He sort of mixed all sorts of stuff like Industrial Revo with a touch of fantasy and doomsday and war and politics. What more could you wish for?

Though I admit Nausicaa isn't something easy to read since you really have to go through the pages really carefully since the drawing style was not like that of a conventional manga. IIRC, Miyazaki didn't use nib pens and inks or such but only pencils. Yes, PENCILS! So you will really get all confused with busy scenes like that of the sky battle at the latter part of volume 1.

Well there's really not much to say about the plot for now since volume 1 to me feels like just an introduction so I'll leave that for now. Off to volume 2!
