    Weekly Shonen Jump [2014] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 5

    What is the ToC ranking?
    ToC stands for Table of Contents. It's found on the last page of every issue of WSJ, but more importantly, the order the series appear in on the ToC is closely related to the popularity of the series. This is determined by polling the readers; there is a polling postcard in every issue of WSJ.

    Some exceptions etc:
    - For the 2nd-8th chapters, TOC is already decided, though it could change depends on readers' ranking.
    - The TOC is affected by the popularity of 8 chapter ago.
    - Shueisha's aiming their main target as elementary and junior high school students, thus, their votes weigh probably more than others (fangirls).

    Isnt it kind of early to say if Academic Hero is a big success? It seems like it'd be a Quasi success like WT.

    It's more just me hoping it will be more than just a quasi-success.
    World Trigger didn't do as well as Boku no Hero did early on though.
    If the anime doesn't give World Trigger a big enough boost though then there is no way it will remain popular enough to keep running for much longer.

    I think WT'll reach around 150,000 to 200,000 in sales after the anime which is plenty to keep it going in the magazine.

    I'm in the camp of "please wait a little longer before declaring Hero Academy a big success."
    Heck it could very well still be a failure, it's still relatively new. I'd kinda move that sentiment over to Hinomarou as well.

    Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2014] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 7

    Quote Quote:
    I think this literary masterpiece is best summarized as an intoxicating and hugely vibrant world full of immense and unmatched potential in which little ability label mechanisms can be used by people to enable them to use some ability (like drive). High Figh abilities are a class of their own and belong to only special people. The meticulously well-crafted and tenderly cool bumbling down on his luck, lonely, and bullied lead character stumbles into some bad dealings and then is propelled on the path of landing in between a cop hunting for these and a group selling them, thus launching us into a larger than life, wholly unique, and pretty stunningly novel adventure that looks to have huge potential on being as creatively fulfilling as World Trigger and its contemporaries. Its is a must read. Ive gone through it multiple times now myself as it is just that good.
    I'm caught between being kind of in awe that you got all of this from one chapter and being confused since it only sorta answered my question. I will say this. You have a gift for hyperbole that I have rarely seen before and will respect. Just....Jump isn't masterpiece literature. I love manga as much as the next person and jump is pretty decent at times but...no. Even if this series were a great hit it's still just...a manga. A Jump manga no less.

    From what I'm able to glean from that paragraph of...hyperbolic intensity, it sounds like it has a premise kinda similar to Stealth Symphony (at least with the character archetype for the protagonist), and a little bit of Psycho pass. I didn't like the former while I found the latter to be smartly written if not kind of emotionally disengaging so I guess I'm half interested in this. Assuredly not enough to get ESJ, but enough to at least read it raw and form an opinion for myself.

    ....I'm reading your post again and just...wow.

    Kuroko no Basket, Medaka Box and Nunaryhon no Mago survived for a long time and you call them Big Successes, but their ranking was similar with what World Trigger and Isobe are getting, so why think that they are just Quasi? Is even stranger when you get that World Trigger got an anime and Isobe has a especial place in the end of the magazine just like Pyu Fuku Jaguar. You should assume they will be Big Successes and not otherwise.

    Let's see the rankings(by half years):
    Kuroko no Basket -> 8, 15, 11, 11, 13, 14, 12, 7, 5, 6, 4, ENDED
    Medaka Box -> 17, 16, 14, 14, 8, 14, 15, 18, ENDED
    Nunarihyon no Mago -> 8, 16, 9, 4, 9, 15, 17, 18, ENDED
    World Trigger -> 8, 9, 12, Currently(13)
    Isobe Isobee Monogatari -> 10, Currently(11)

    About sales, World trigger is making similar numbers to Kuroko no Basket, Medaka Box, Nurarihyon no Mago when they were in their Volume 7, +100k by the second week.

    I very clearly stated that my criteria for a series being a 'big success' or a 'quasi-success' was based on how long they ran (with minor exceptions). It's not perfect, but I feel length is the best and easiest way to judge a series success in Jump for this type of thing.

    Isobe isn't a "quasi success", is a success or even big, has a special treatment like Jaguar, has 2 chapters every week, had a flash anime, color pages, very good rankings and very good sales for a gag.

    Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2014] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 7

    I also don't understand why World Trigger was included as a "quasi-success" and not as a "big success". Actually, I get a bit annoyed every time someone says something like that. WT already sells far more than any other series which are usually considered "quasi-successes", including Psyren and Muhyo to Rouji, and got an anime. If Hinomaru and Hero Academia were already included as "big successes" because their first few rankings show that it's probable, WT deserves to enter that category as well because it has already gone much farther in establishing itself in the magazine. I'm not saying it's impossible for it to suddenly end before its 3rd anniversary because this is Jump and we all know how unpredictable it can be, but by now it's much more probable for WT to be a long-term success. It already sells more and has better rankings than Sket Dance or Medaka Box had around the same length. People should get over WT's mediocre commercial start.

    As for Isobe, I think it's very hard to fit it in some category, because of its clear special treatment. It runs in a very different way compared to other series.

    We can't call Mitsubuki Condor a failure yet. Don't count it out.
