Wah, one minute you don't find the time to post a reply and next thing you know is several days have passed. Gosh, how I hate the term paper deadline rush... sorry for not getting back to any of you guys sooner!

Being a self-taught learner has its own disadvantage though, for instance your learning process would be less systematic, and you may end up going nowhere even after quite some time (this was my personal experience).

I agree that many aspiring Japanese language learner are afraid of Kanji, but for me, that is the part where frustration and fun combined. If Japanese language has no exotic scripts, it would be not as much as fun, I believe.

    どうぞよろしくお願いします,プリンスさん!
I guess that's what you could call it, yeah! Though I will still need my JLPT certificate as an additional reference some time in the future. (I think I'll be going for the 2級 while I'm in Tokyo next year.)
I'd say it's most important to have some sort of teacher at your side to help you during the first few months/years. It's just so important to learn and fully understand the basics. If you screw up there you're practically doomed...

But after one has learned the ropes it's basically individual learning for everybody. At my university during the first two years we had 8 hrs/week of language courses. Later on, it gets less and less and nowadays I only tend to have around 3 hrs/week, which really is not enough to improve, let alone even maintain a certain level of language proficiency...

So at some point or other everybody is really confronted with the same problem here. Therefore, I know where you're coming from and share some of those experiences. : )

And kanji are yucky! *lol* I'm not really the hard-studying type, so whenever I had a Kanji Exam coming up I ended up learning several dozens (at some point even 200 or so) of them by heart the night before the test... and you tend to forget them easily if you don't practice them regularly, which is another problem.

I'll just hum along for now Wenger is....well he is what he is. Sells our captains and brings in shoddy replacement. We have established ourselves as the supermarket team of Top tier European football, along with Porto
Oh, f*ck them, really... They were playing like shit against Naples, had all the luck in the world against Barca (still can't believe it) and we virtually pwned them for like 119 minutes of the game but were just to stupid to score more often. (And apparently Heynckes and the guys never heard of this Drogba dude who's not too shabby with his headers... )

But that's stale news now. We will be back. Or in fact, we already are! The team has developed an amazing spirit and is currently in great shape. Kroos and Müller are on fire, Schweinsteiger and Robben are recovering splendidly from their injuries and other ailments, new players like Martínez, Shaqiri and Mandzukic were integrated in a swift, and even though we still miss the likes of Alaba and Gomez we destroyed our opponents in the league and dominated Valencia in UCL... I have a feeling this might finally be *our* year!

And yeah, so true about Wenger. I seriously love that guy but the way he handles player transfers is just... yeah. Pure Wengerism, words can't describe.
The big difference between Porto and your team is: the former make BIG MONEY by selling their players. Whereas I feel like RVP, Song and other players in the past (like Nasri for example) were sold underprice.

    Hey there thornofcarrion~

Thanks for stopping by! Yeah, sure took me some time. As they say, haste makes waste! (Well, or rather I didn't really feel like posting more about myself.)

Uh, manhwa... I have to be honest with you: I really, really, REALLY don't like them. Doesn't matter if it's officially released titles or webcomics, I can't seem to bring myself to enjoy them. (Especially artwise they feel a bit "cheap", or maybe that's not exactly the right word, I just feel like they are lacking something compared to the Japanese counterpart.)

There are some minor exceptions like the brilliant Shin Angyo Onshi. I also read KibaTabi (The Arms Peddler) and The Breaker which are both okay, I guess. KissWood was kinda enjoyable as well, if I remember corrently.

But nah, in the end it's really not my cup of tea. Hope that does not offend you...

You just broke my heart . I can understand though, manhwa art takes time to get used to it. Once you cross this barrier, you will surely enjoy them. I am sure you already heard of Noblesse and Tower of God. You can give them a try. They are better than The Breaker in my opinion.

    What is your favorite manga?

Well, I'm not so sure about that. I don't really feel the need to delve deeper into the manhwa scene. There are still plenty of manga out there that I need to check out and their number keeps rising, of course.
I do know Noblesse and ToG but I can't say I like either of them...

So before I keep crushing your heart into more even teeny-tinier pieces I'll better change the subject... manga, yes, love them! To be honest, I don't really have a favorite series per se. Once you've read your fair share of titles you just can't pinpoint the one, IMO. Therefore, I rather go for "Favorite Mangaka" listings instead even though that can be tough, too...

Last time someone asked me about this I named the following guys:
    • Asano Inio (Oyasumi Punpun, Sekai no owari to yoake-mae, Subarashii sekai - what a wonderful world, Nijigahara Holograph, solanin, Umibe no onna no ko)
If I were to name one person as my favorite mangaka it would probably be Asano. He's one of the best newcomers of the last decade and is just so, so, SO damn talented and gifted. (His subtle and emotional style and the touch of gentle melancholy in his works, combined with his distinctive art style... he's pure genius, hands down.)
    • Igarashi Daisuke (Kaijuu no kodomo, Little Forest, Majo, Hanashippanashi, Kabocha no bouken)
One of the most prominent faces of the La nouvelle Manga movement whose works are characterized by their one-of-a-kind spirit. Their closeness to and bond with nature are - for me, who was born in a big city and always lived there - a real adventure. Add the delicate stroke of brush, that sometimes even feels like its prancing over the pages and you got all those little masterpieces Igarashi puts out.
    • Inoue Takehiko (Vagabond, Slam Dunk, REAL)
This luminary of Japanese manga really needs no introduction. His work titles alone should suffice as a reason... - I own about every series or book he ever published, even the limited edition artbook that was only sold at his art exhibitions in Japan, so you should get the picture how much I adore Inoue's work.
    • Tsuruta Kenji (Omoide Emanon, Sasurai Emanon, Forget-me-not, Nippon Furusato Chinbotsu, Spirit of Wonder)
Another mangaka who's often associated with the La nouvelle Manga movement. In Tsuruta's case it's probably more about the artistic aspect and aesthetics, i.e. the visual component of his works that really blows me off my feet. But his quiet and haunting "voice" (i.e. narration/style of his storytelling) shouldn't be ignored either, of course.
    • Oda Hideji (Coo no sekai: Coo's world, Miyori no mori, Kakusan)
The fifth spot was a close call because I haven't read that many of Oda's series, as you can see. But what I know is nothing short but astounding! I can't say I have seen many mangaka who can create as imaginative worlds, which draw you in completely as a reader.
    • Honorable mentions ("close, but no cigar"): Furuya Usamaru & Matsumoto Taiyou

So, you do not campaign yourself for the Community Awards?

By the way, the list of your favorite mangakas is superb, glad that there is someone who appreciates their works.

    Hey there Dorakkun!

Well, to be honest I'm not sure how the whole campaigning even works...

And thanks for the compliment! I guess I'm somewhat of a "Manga Snob" and tend to seek the artsy, more sophisticated works rather than the blunt and/or dull entertainment. (Which, of course, can be fun at times, too!)
But it's so great to hear that we share the appreciation for those guys.

Well, just replace your awesome Don Draper sig with campaign message

I think becoming a Manga Snob is inevitable once you have read all the mainstream stuff . For me personally, I'd keep Matsumoto Taiyou within the list, but nonetheless I still wholeheartedly support your list.

In which part of Germany do you live in, if I may ask?

Ah~, now that makes sense! (I'm more of a Roger Sterling fan, btw. He's got so much style [] and gets by far the best lines on the show!)
I think I may want to try come up with a little something then. (But first I'mma head to bed now... I can't believe it's gotten this late again! )

Yeah, Matsumoto-sensei has done amazing stuff for many, many years. It was no easy decision and I'm pretty sure that list might change over future months/years over and over again. Like, maybe I will stumble across some brilliant new stuff or an author who missed the top spots publishes an amazing new work... who knows?

Oh, sure. Be free to ask anything! I'm from Munich. (Was born here and never lived anywhere else.)
Not sure how well you know your geography but to specify that a little more: It's in Southern Germany, quite close to the Alps.

From which of the many islands of Indonesia are you hailing from?

I'm more of a Christina Hendricks fan anyway since I'm a huge fan of hourglass body. .

Ah, I visited Munich once, and like any other cities in Germany, it's wonderful. I already reiterates it several times, Germany never bores me, probably because I'm a foreigner.

I'm coming from the most populous island, Java. Sure we have so many islands but sadly only a handful numbers of them are lived by humans.

By the way, you have a nice promotion sig.

Oh, I also love Joanie! She is my second favorite on the show... she's sooo gorgeous~~

Her French might not be much to speak of but her voice is angel-like... one of her best scenes. Immensely beautiful, yet so sad and lonely. THIS is art!

And you've been to Germany before? No kidding!? Wow, that must have been quite the trip. What exactly did you like about it, any aspects that struck you the most?
Java, I see. Wow, that place must be so crammed... you got, like, what? +130 million people there, right? And which city/region you're living in, if I might ask? : )

Thanks! It's partly thanks to your "encouragement". Thought I might give it a try.
Now let's see if it helps me taking one of those awards home. I'd love to snatch the Translator one but carlos is one hell of a translational powerhouse.^^

Hello scav and thanks for stopping by!

Well, my spam potential is kinda low, I guess. So the posts tend to be longer than just a hand full of lines...
And thanks for noting my signature. xD

Favorite smiley? Wow, that's a new one. I'mma have to think about it for a moment... I'm really digging Cookie Monster (in any variety). But , , and are also topnotch. I like quite a few, MH has a nice variety of them!

I mostly do translations of smaller snippets, like spoilers, interviews, and whatnot. If anybody on the Otaku Shoten has a question about some Japanese sources or so I'm mostly responding to that. I also do some semi-professional translations in German for One Piece, I'm the co-founder and co-owner of a huge German OP Database. And other than that I did some stuff from Shounen JUMP in the past.
I will most likely be doing more translations in the upcoming months. I'm already thinking about series I might want to tackle then, probably some Seinen stuff in order to practice and improve my reading skills. - Any requests? lol Is there a series out there you know, which does not get enough love translation-wise?

And about Manhwa... I don't know, it's just not my cup of tea. Plus, I know Japanese and enjoy being able to read something in its original language (same thing goes for books, TV series, movies, music, etc.), so that's another aspect. - And I certainly don't want to learn Korean. xD"

so you make a living by translating or its just a hobby? and nope im not the kind of guy who ask translation.

and no need to learn corean to enjoy manhwa. have you actually tried some manhwa before hating them?

Re: What you call 'love' was invented by guys like me. To sell Nylons.

Oh, you're right. "hurr" is da bomb! How could I forget that one.

    About Jazz:
You really think so? For me it just perfectly fits my love for melody and melodic compositions. It's a lofty and majestic kind of music with a feel of absolute grandeur. It helps me enjoy the moment, lay back and suck up every note played.
And I also love Hiphop, which of course takes influences from Jazz, Soul, and Blues and more than often even features samples of said musical styles. So I don't think it's that unusual really...

For now, I translate part-time. (In order to make a living and finance my studies at university.) Once I graduated I would love to become a professional translator, especially since I already had some experience in the past and even had the chance to build some minor connections.

And dude, I don't HATE manhwa. That's such a strong word.
I started out reading manga about 13 years ago. I first came into touch with manhwa around 2007-ish or so. It's only natural that manhwa wouldn't take the same role in my life. I have read 10-20 series, I guess. Like I wrote in this thread before, Shin Angyo Onshi is one hell of a series!

I think during that scene I was thinking "D'aww her voice is so cute" kind of thing.

Yes, I had some trips to Germany, sometimes its business, sometimes its personal, but I've been to Germany several times. I think I get a sense of... I don't know exactly but western Europe countries are most of the time more developed than the majority of Asia, so probably the sense of amazement.
Ah, my hometown is the capital city, but now I'm livin a quite place (still in Java) for this question I'm afraid that I cannot give you an exact answer

Actually it's very difficult for me to choose the best translator. I think I can feel their hardship when translating, and every translators in MH deserved to get an award.

By the way, it seems that you're really knowledgeable about JUMP. Are you subscribing to the magazine?
