Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2012-2013] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 4

My two cents on the 17 years thing:
I think there's also one quite pragmatic reason as to why this (arguably) seems to be a popular age with some Shounen manga protagonists. One thing you have to keep in mind is that in the current 6-3-3-4 education system of postwar Japan, being 17 years makes you a 高校2年生, i.e. a junior or 11th grader. That is a very crucial time in every student's life. It is the last year you get to "enjoy" yourself as a student, some even call it the peak of your youth (青春, seishun). After that, shit gets real and the serious side of life starts. The third year of high school pretty much only consists of studying and preparing yourself for the super hard and demanding university entrance exams. (Those who decide not to transfer into university will have to find a job and start working.)

As a matter of fact, most high schools thus forbid their seniors to participate in any club activities altogether. And even when they are allowed most students probably set their priorities differently.

So in that respect, the age of 17 and the time of being a junior/11th grader does in fact bear a certain special meaning of some sort.

    --

But then again, this is only of importance for manga with realistic settings, like school life stories or sport series. In a fantasy setting this shouldn't really play a role...

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2012-2013] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 4

Maybe you just picked people with 17 years?

I can name quite a few main charas that arent 17, for starters every spokon in JUMP (at least at its start).
    Big 3 started with 17, 12 and 15.. Right now 19, 15-16 and 16-17. Gon is like 12 IIRC.

Now the most populwr JUMP properties.
Kenshiro doesnt look 17 to me (may be wrong).
    Kenshin 29
    Jojo.. Dunno
    Yuusuke 15-16
Goku was like 12-13.. Dunno if he was 17
Light was 17 for some of DN, but most he isnt.
    Yugi 16-17
    Yoh
    Dai is like.. 12¿
    Taikoubou is 72 IIRC
    Seiya IIRC is 12-13

For rom-com, most MC have 16.. Probably so they can have club activities? I mean Mr Prince made it sound like if you are 17 in Japan you better be studying.
For coming-of-age stories it varies but I think the MC starts younger, i.e. Hikaru no go started with Hikaru at like 12.

But I have seen like lots of characters born May 5th.. I know boys day..

Rereading dramas post it seems he was talkign about second main characters, well I guess its so high-school readers can simpatize with them?

Toriko and Komatsu are both 25 by the way. Gin's age is never given, he's just said to be "in his 20's.".

In the 80's there was plenty of manga with adult heroes. So it seems that the model has changed from the adult the young wants to be to the teenager which they can identify with.

It seems likely. The culture in Japan and globally has changed a lot since the 80s, and there is a much more dominant youth culture nowadays. It makes sense to see this reflected in the output of teen works.

Japan seems to be more youth orientated these days. Even shows directed towards adults seem to have teenage protagonists, ones that attend high-school to be more precise.

its a simple formula. you kids like teenager, because they are somehow adult but not this stiff old kind. teenagers can relate to this age group easily, because its their own and adult have fond memories of their time as a teenager, can also easily relate to it.

Its probably something about Slam Dunk schoolarship, I have a couple of old issues (around 2005 to 2009 IIRC) and they had similar adds about Slam Dunk schoolarship, though I might be wrong.
