Yes, this is a thread about scanlations and the people who make em the scanlators. That includes translators also because they are the most important part of the team.
I've narrowed the reasons down to 4: Because its fun, because you like manga, for the fans and lasty (and my favorite) to boost your e-penis.
My reason was originally the 2nd, because I love manga. A lot and just wanted to give back to the community. Then I wanted to get more manga done faster, and attempted to join a lot of different groups. Sadly it hit me that I was doing manga that was already being done. So I wanted to do something new, but to do something new you need to make a group. Sadly making a group requires a certain ego and that leads to e-penis (though i'm not saying all group leaders are assholes but they do stuff that sometimes makes them seem like one.)
Let's see for my case. It would not be reason 3 and another reason that you have not mentioned and I like to add it in here.
After merely a few months here, I found out that giving back to the community and fans are not really the ideal reasons given to why we scanlate. Irate fans doesn't appreciate the releases and sometimes trashed them. ~.~; But the few good ones would just thank you and exit the IRC without even staying back in the channel to chat. ~.~;
E-penis 'nuff said. These are only for the egoistic scanlators. Getting your head big over an online project isn't really that important that these people might think of it as. >.>;
I don't translate mangas that I do not read. So yes, reason 3 is the most legitimate and appropriate reason that you have in the list. Also the additional reasons that I would like to add is that I love working as teams. I have not really have a good working relationship with people in the past but online projects changes my entire perception of it. ^.^
My reasons aren't on the list.
I agree with Dark-san's last paragraph. It's fun to work in a group and produce something that other people will enjoy.
And I actually started scanlating to stop reading manga. If I'm working on a manga, I have less time to read them. So I guess that's the opposite of reason 2?
Fans are nice though...
I would say it's the 2nd... I had thought of getting involved a long time ago, but was way too busy with school/rl, but finally got some free time. I like to see high quality releases so I'm always working towards that.
