It seems like having a sad backstory is almost a prerequesite to being a Strawhats.
And each one of them seems to have a sad story to tell (some way more sadder than other though...)
So, I was wondering what was the general consensus on which which Strawhats as the saddest back story?
Here's a quick list (I might have forgot some things, feel free to let me know).
I might add some pictures later on if I have some time.
- Sabo's death
- Kuina's death
- His mother's death and his father leaving him.
- Her mother died, shot in the head right in front of her.
- She had to work for the murderer for years and start stealing to get money for him.
- Stranded on a deserted island, he ate all the food while the captain almost starved to death.
- After transforming into a hybrid, he was shunned by every deer.
- When he finally found someone to love, that person became sick and ended up dying from a poison that Chopper gave him.
- Everyone she knew as a kid was killed by the marines (including her mother).
- She's been targeted by the marines for 20 years, since she was 8 years old.
- His mentor died because of Franky's battle ships.
- His whole crew died one after the other
- He was stuck alone on a ship for 50 years, therefore breaking his promise to Laboon.
For me Choppers are the saddest especially these pages:
I had tears in my eyes after finishing that chapter.
Robin by a landslide for me but most of them have sad back story but for me the weakest are Sanji and Usopp backstory
The only one that made me actually cry was Robin's story.
In the anime, when she finally said that she wanted to live, the tears just came automatically:
It still brings me to tears just watching it again out of context!
So, I would say that she has the saddest story.
Although, she's closely followed by Brook.
The way that his crew all died one after the other while singing that song just haunted me for a while.
And after that, he was a lost soul for years, and even once he found his body back, he was still alone for 50 years...
Next would be Chopper and Nami.
Then, Zoro and Luffy.
Franky, Usopp and Sanji didn't really have a sad background...
At least, nothing comparing to the others.

If you will add Going Merry story on Usopp it will be close to Robin ^^
Chopper's backstory, especially in the anime, and the best part was Hiluluk's death (with that awesome music), as for Robin, it is sad yeah, but felt meh about it
Robin's one is the most tragic and the saddest. And Sanji's one doesn't follow the pattern; it's not sad but a mere anecdote that can recall with his former captain drinking some beer.

well as a story onto itself chopper does have many personal scars true but robin had the worse of all of the SHs. every single 1 of them at least had ppl that trusted and loved them til they became an SH (too cheesy i know). but robin didnt even had that. my vote goes to her cause of that. the only 1 who can rival it is brook thou.
P.S: as a backstory usopp had the lamest of all. not has the same impact of the others.
Zoro had the worst back story to me in my opinion. Not only was the causes of death lame we couldn't even see her death. Falling down the stairs.....it was short too in comparison to all the others.. I feel like Luffys their will be another flashback for Zoro with Kuina alive somehow because I don't know about you guys but that's been my pet peeve for ten years. Usopp's is just as bad but I feel it was a bit more developed. Sanji's backstory was more sad to me then Zoro's. It ended too abruptly and a lot of it doesn't make sense.
Chopper Luffy Nami Robin and Brook have the saddest back stories. Franky and Nami's were kinda the same to me while Brook and Robin's were the most brutal.
Robin's, I guess. Her mother was killed in front of her, hell, the whole island was killed off for an idiot's ambition and the WG not wanting people to know about the 'true history', and she had to run away from pursuers for her whole life, until the EL events.
Nami's and Chopper's follow closely - Nami also had her mother killed in front of her and had to work for Arlong, but at least she had someone left in her life to protect; Chopper was lonely before his DF, when he finally found a friend, he died and even partly because of Chopper, but Chopper kept going on to fulfill Hilruk's dream, and wasn't completely alone.
Well.. oh.. i thought this would be a thread about all the backstories. Not just from mugiwara crew.
But OK, From Mugiwara crew its in my opinion a tie between Robin and Nami.
Outside of Mugiwara crew for me its the Bond between Kraugara and Noland (Skypia Backstory)
I always felt that Kuina's death was the worst death in this manga...
It just doesn't make sense that the rival/love interest of Zoro died in a such a stupid way...
I'm amongst those that really hope that Kuina is still alive somehow... I'm even okay with her being Tashigi!
As long as she didn't die this way!
Robin is the saddest. She not only witnessed the destruction of her home and the people's she's known, including her mom and the giant friend, but she's lived mostly life of a loner, before and after the destruction. She was betrayed by people she helped, the Marines chased her for years and continues to do so, and she was always viewed as someone to hate. I think the SHP was the only crew to give her hope.
As for second, I dunno whose backstory was sadder - Brook or Nami's. Nami saw her own mom shot before her eyes to protect her daughters. Then Nami was forced to work for Arlong, abused, under the threat that Arlong would destroy the town and the ones she cared about if she didn't cooperate. Brook suffered loneliness for decades after seein all of his crew die.
Robins story broke me, when she was begging for Olivia to remember her I was scared for her but after Bellemere i wanted another mother to show that compassion that overcomes logic. She has nowhere to go back to I'm so glad the Straw Hats found her and saved her. Right on it's heels is Chopper, isolation is something i know only too well, as a black guy in South Africa who cant speak any of his native languages.
Hoooooly crap, every strawhat's background is really sad.
Robin's has got to be the saddest, she didn't even have a brief period where she had a loving home. Having a terrible foster home, then having everyone she ever knew massacred in front of her, then forced to grow up totally alone with an enormous bounty on her head, never safe, hunted by everyone.
Nami's would be next. She at least did have a loving home for a bit, but then watched her mom get murdered and was forced to work for the murderer, while tricked and abused, and everyone she knew held hostage.
This is getting too sad, I'll stop here.
