They are studying Rukh alteration so it is natural they have black rukh. Plus since it is a academy that researches in magic there are bound to be people who would follow any path to better understand the meaning behind magic even if it means to corrupt the rukh.

Great chapter, I felt like Titus feelings were delivered pretty well. What I found interesting is that "young Titus" wasn't portrayed as something human but rather as some kind of... insect? Wasn't sure how Mogamett would react towards something that clearly isn't what you would call "human" but it seems all that matters to him is if you're a magician or not.

That surprised me as well, it seems like Mogamett is well aware how dangerous it is. The only explanation I have in mind is that he's one of the guys who thinks that they control something dark and dangerous for a good cause. Or that they can gain something by experimenting with it. We all know how that usually ends though...

Anyway, it's hard to figure out Mogamett at this point.

Good point you marked there, K-dom.

I think this is strictly tied to Solomon's time. When all the magicians were able to rivalize with his forces. Dark Ruhk is make your own current of magic at your desire. This is teached to a part as a Wizard's knowledge but also is showed to us to understand how humans are great in doing choices in the stream of fate.

I also wonder what impact this chapter will have on the relation between Titus and Aladdin. Now Titus will probably idolize Mogamett like a god whereas Aladdin will probably have to go against him sooner or later

If Titus is being so grateful for the redemption made by Mogammet and after that contempt all Magi, I also could see that he would have to face to face with Aladdin as well. I'm just hoping that he would not turn to the Dark Rukh for help, that would be very sad, though since he is also a part of Scheherazade, I'd doubt such case would happen.

There's also the complicated portrayal of Sheherazade as Titus' mother and Mogammet as his surrogate father.

Sheherazade gave life to him, but is quite ruthless in taking it away again. She also makes it clear he's just a tool, like so many before him.
Mogammet is all kind, understanding and protective and wants to nurture him. The two classical roles have been reversed here.

Sheherazade is much more powerful, though, and Mogammet is content with using his power only within the Academy. With the Kou empire and Sinbad, there is plenty of room for conflict.

Aladdin is in a tough spot: he has already experienced the lifeforms that black rukh can create and now, with Titus, he has an example of what white rukh can create. Both are an abuse. In that sense, his stay at the Academy is a reminder that the world is not simply black or white (bad pun intended). I wonder if he's simply there as an observer or if he will actually choose a side. My (poor) guess is Sinbad will order him to return if things get out of hand.

With the power of creation of white rukhs, but with the limitation of human magic, through the human will of magi.
In that world, all are formed with white rukhs, all living beings can only be created with that white power. The difference withTitus is in the lifespan.

I honestly believe that the manga "Magi" is manicheaist, but not in a pejorative sense.
The author has the job of trying to make people understand that the target is not a bad thing and that there is difference between slavery and devotion to a higher power.

People can have varying shades of gray, but there is still white and black to form these shades.

    Re: Magi 165 Discussion/166 Predictions

Well, I catch the whole manga in 4 days. LOVE IT. I have too many expectations and I read just in time to speculate the most about what will happen, in the verge of the big war.

I don't know why people think Scheherazade is good in a country that allows slaves. I don't like her since the first moment I read about her. In the other hand, it's weird the case of Mogamett. You can't be right if you only consider one type of people as people. But the Rukh around him are not black and they present in the same way that gentle souls presents themselves. I don't have an opinion of him well formed yet.

And well, Titus case is strange. I wonder if He can live for long or not. After all, He said He can live only a part of the magic poured on him.

    ...So Exciting!
    The Sky is pouring
    The wind is blowing
    The sea looks red,
    a surging sea of flames
looks like the entrance to hell
    'Perfect', the captain said.
