And I think Zaraki and Unohana might have fought back then before she joined Soul Society, later Zaraki somehow lost his memory and his Zanpaktou - which could have actually really materialized as his vice Captain Yachiru. He named her after the unconscious Memory of Unohana.

As for my takes on this chapter...

I hope (maybe not likely, but still) that it was Yamamoto who gave Retsu that scar and not Kenpachi. Before Yamamoto took her into his newly formed 13 squads, she was known as the most heinous criminal around. What could have changed her mind? Only witnessing an even stronger power.
I hope that when she fought Kenpachi, she did so as she saw him as just a big threat as she used to be (similar mindset). She also spared his life, with little more than a tiny scar across his eye, and showed him that he is nothing compared to her. This would also be similar to Kenpachi showing Ikaku - and saving his life in the same way. Unohana would be suggesting to Kenpachi, that he has to improve to beat her - thus giving him a reason to try and get stronger (and becoming the only person he respects - thus naming Yachiru after her).
I also think that the reason she is in the 4th squad is due to Yamamoto wanting to keep her away from fights, so that she doesn't revert to how she used to be...
But I am glad that the fight has started, and also excited by what may happen to Ichigo and Renji...
    Also...
Following Zanpakuto training - what can Bonze and Senjumaru Shutara have to show - Body, Spirit and Zanpakuto being done - perhaps Reitsu? Combat training (seems a bit lame...)?
That's possible with Unohana and Yamamoto, and perhaps you are right...it would certainly explain why Kenpachi is alive after delivering a supposed "wound" on Unohana...

Shutara looks like to be the information gatherer type...so she might deliver important information about the Quincy, about how to fight them or something like this....as for Bonze...I have no idea...he looked to be in charge, so perhaps he will just escort them to the Soul King or something...

Yet, I also see an inner conflict. In spite of her tumultuous and bloodthirsty criminal past, Unohana managed to control her impulses and become one of the most feared captains. I guess that, like Ichigo, she conquered the animal within her and excelled in swordsmanship, fighting strategies, and mental discipline. Hope she'll teach Zarachi everything she knows. If he applies her teaching in his everyday life, a bloody hell of a fighter will be born.
    Welcome!! \o/

You are right about Unohana and her inner beast so to say...personally I'm hoping for exactly that power of composure and self control when I'm hoping for both to be alive at the end of their fight...

I agree, I don't think the Kenpachi training will result in the death of one of those two characters. I believe it is highly likely though that Retsu will bring Zaraki to a point where he faces death, and gets to decide, whether to cooperate with his zanpakuto/ausachi or die. And I believe it's not a coincidence this plot is shown parallel to Ichigo and Renji, who kind of have to change their attitude towards their zanpakutos' as well.

However, the next few chapters I actually expect to be focused on an other plot, maybe Urahara or the Vandenreich, until we eventually skip back to Soul Society and King's Realm and get some first training results. I hope The Kenpachi fight will not be offpanel'd though as I'm highly interested in that one.
    Thanks and welcome!

You actually reminded me of how I originally wanted to connect the story threads in this chapter...Kenpachi will have to eventually go through some changes as well, and I'm looking forward to what that could actually be...if the rumour is true and Yachiru is his zanpaktou spirit, then it will be interesting to see these changes

About the next chapter....I'm thinking that Ichigo and Renji will occupy it entirely...certain side plots are important and all that, but it's still their story line that has the most importance and thus, the need to advance...I wonder if Kubo will ever show Byakuya and Rukia in the King's Realm...

One slight problem (or perhaps 'problem' is not the right word) with the idea that Yachiru is Kenpachi's Zanpakuto is that it means that a Zanpakuto (Yachiru) is the master of another Zanpakuto...
This would mean that an Asauchi (her Zanpakuto) had adapted to Yahiru's power, which had adapted to Kenpachi's (as Yachiru would also have had to start as an Asauchi - also what about Kenpachi's blade that he used at that time?!??!).
    Interesting - but possible?
    Infinite RAGE!

Yeah, good point...I have totally forgotten Yachiru has her own Zanpaktou...that she has an Asauchi that adapted to her power, while she is a Zanpaktou spirit is possible, it's just a bit too convoluted, so it's very unlikely...
And to be honest, a Zanpaktou spirit should mirror the personality of the Shinigami, and that's another telling point
