Title : Kekkaishi
Mangaka : Tanabe Yellow
Original Publisher : Shogakukan
Serialized by : Shounen Sunday
Genre : Shounen, Adventure, Supernatural

Short Summary

By night, junior high student Yoshimori Sumimura is a "kekkaishi"--a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. By day, Yoshimori's got some other demons to battle: an addiction to sweets and a seriously crotchety grandfather! Yoshimori's pretty 16-year-old neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, is also a kekkaishi, but their families are feuding over who is the true practitioner of the art.

So with the first fansub of the anime available now; I thought I'd help create some awareness of this brilliant shounen manga.

It's pretty popular in Japan right now, where its at it's 14th volume atm. But most people outside of Japan hardly know about it.
Viz licensed this pretty early on (they probably saw its potential very soon), so just when the scanlations were being released Snoopycool already had to drop it. (btw Viz is at volume 7 now, and its a great release)

I honestly cant recommend this manga enough. If people say Reborn is a hidden gem in Jump thats underappreciated; Kekkaishi is Shonen Sunday's diamond in the rough.
If you're not swept away by it right away, that's prefectly normal. I mean, what shounen series does start off spectacular?
But either way, give it some time, and forget what you know about most shounen-cliché's. It is totally worth committing to, I give you my word.
The theme might have been done several times before; demon-hunting and all that. But the approach is so refreshing in that it really takes the time to fully establish the world of Kekkaishi and what the characters are all about; before getting into the really serious stuff. You might think its not going anywhere in the first 4-5ish volumes. But believe me, when you've read beyond that you'll see that there was a LOT of foreshadowing. You just dont know about it yet

I personally adore the character interaction in this manga. They're all very colourful in their own way and Yoshimori and his gramps are just a hoot.
Ps. Castle cakes ftw!

I hope you check it out, and see in it what I do.
And I'm usually not crazy about seeing shounen series adapted into anime. But the anime of Kekkaishi is SUPERB.

Finally! Someone noticed about this manga. A very good plot and character development makes it one of my favourites. You should try it if you haven't.

I've only read up to chapter 15 and when I checked an anime blog that reviews the Kekkaishi anime today, it appears that the latest epsiode is also in the point where I am. Might check on the fansub later

OT:
Reborn a hidden gem? Haven't read it but because it has an anime, it might be worth reading/watching after I read all 260 HxH chapters, Kekkaishi and King of Thorns this coming Christmas break. And I also promised myself to check Mushishi.

Well, thats what they say about Reborn anyway. I cant call it nothing more than a quote, cause I'm personally not a fan of it.

Kekkaishi is great ^^ i wish i could get the raw anime without using BT seeing that i can't use BT....so i haven't seen the anime yet in the short run. But the manga is really entertaining though! i love the artwork too! Tanabe has definatly got something going for himself.

I'm bumpin this because this forum needs more Kekkaishi love lol. I'm only up to what has been released by Viz but the manga is so good. The anime adaption is done very well also (KEFI and Yoroshiku have the first couple episodes out.) And it seems everything KEFI picks up is good so everyone should give either the manga or anime a shot. Anyone have a link for the japanese manga covers passed volume 9?
