So with the first fansub of the anime available now; I thought I'd help create some awareness of this brilliant shounen manga.
It's pretty popular in Japan right now, where its at it's 14th volume atm. But most people outside of Japan hardly know about it.
Viz licensed this pretty early on (they probably saw its potential very soon), so just when the scanlations were being released Snoopycool already had to drop it. (btw Viz is at volume 7 now, and its a great release)
I honestly cant recommend this manga enough. If people say Reborn is a hidden gem in Jump thats underappreciated; Kekkaishi is Shonen Sunday's diamond in the rough.
If you're not swept away by it right away, that's prefectly normal. I mean, what shounen series does start off spectacular?
But either way, give it some time, and forget what you know about most shounen-cliché's. It is totally worth committing to, I give you my word.
The theme might have been done several times before; demon-hunting and all that. But the approach is so refreshing in that it really takes the time to fully establish the world of Kekkaishi and what the characters are all about; before getting into the really serious stuff. You might think its not going anywhere in the first 4-5ish volumes. But believe me, when you've read beyond that you'll see that there was a LOT of foreshadowing. You just dont know about it yet
I personally adore the character interaction in this manga. They're all very colourful in their own way and Yoshimori and his gramps are just a hoot.
Ps. Castle cakes ftw!
I hope you check it out, and see in it what I do.
And I'm usually not crazy about seeing shounen series adapted into anime. But the anime of Kekkaishi is SUPERB.
