A surgical shounen title. This day and age, quite unusual--that's likely its appeal, too. Every chapter revolves around a surgical genius performing procedures well ahead of his time, to the amazement of his allies and enemies. While the series itself is full of anachronisms, it's still fun to read about surgical procedures and emergency care. Personally, I still think Blackjack is far superior in the surgical manga category but this one deserves some credit for trying.

And, if you read it for study purposes, there's a great amount of medical and anatomical vocabulary. Don't forget to read the snake corners with interesting facts and trivia you probably didn't know!

Overall, 3/5. It's still rough around the edges, and likely is pulling for survival in Jump. But if this title does survive, I think it has promise. Permalink " "

Asklepios is a well-written, yet highly underrated and relatively unknown manga published in Weekly Shounen Jump. It follows a boy named Buzz who is a surgeon in medieval times, known as "Asklepios" . At the time, the Roman Catholic church is in control of the government and only accept medical practices that they feel God allows them to perform. Because of this, the Asklepios' methods are considered heretical by the church and they are sought after for punishment. Even though Buzz knows that he is being pursued by the church's Saint Knights, he continues on in secret, doing what he knows is right.

I enjoy this series because of the true-to-life accounts of surgery. Some of the ways Buzz is able to help people are astonishing, including making a nose for a man from the skin of his bicep. Read this!
