There are three main characters in the series. Kai, the focus of the story, is a son of a prostitute and uses abandoned old piano as an escape from his harsh life in the underworld community of the "Forest Edge." Syuhei is the son of a world famous pianist, pressured into studying the piano since the age of four largely against his will. Ajino is a former world famous pianist whose reason for existence was destroyed in an unfortunate traffic accident. Then one day in a quiet, backwater town, the three of them kindle a passion for the piano in each other with a little help from the great classical composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and especially Chopin. The heart of the series is not the piano nor the Chopin that gets much attention. It's the exposition of character development and the interactions between the three that is the core of the series.
