Hm, I can see where this is going, but I'll keep on a look out for the "translations in need of improvement" and "translations that I think are the best."
Hope this site improves after this project that you guys are working with!
Shirokuro, if you need a proof reader I can get you one :)
The system of having a regular critique tab for translations does not work, since it will either become full of "its nice lulz", or in the small chances there will be a competent translator who writes quite a piece, no one else will be able to see and draw experience and knowledge from it since it is hidden in some critique section of a translation.
Doing it in a public way, in a structured, manual system, is the only way I can see that it can be influential (which is the hopeful endgame).
But yes, I do agree that the one being critiqued should be allowed to decide if it is anonymous or not. And if the person submitting it is not the translator him-/herself it would be anonymous, although I guess personal turn-ins should be prioritized.
But seriously, I would be very surprised if the critique goes anything like "this sucks." Firstly, since that would be a pointless critique because it does not teach the critique readers anything. It will very most likely be gone through in a helpful manner, explaining what could be improved.
It is nothing to be afraid of, and if you attend University you should be used to oppositions, or if you are going to attend one, it is just as well that you learn to receive helpful critique from others; because no one is as good as they think they are, and will keep on fooling themselves into that until they are told otherwise.
I can admit that, myself, with certainty.
But I'm just speaking from my own heart here. I don't really know anything...
And yeah, I don't have any image what will you guys do.........
P.S: It's us who must improve, not the site, notice how people just click online viewing or direct download without really paying attention to anything else....
For series I really care about, if I think its required, I will offer my services- I won't offer if translations /do not/ require it (I'm pretty busy myself).
When I do proofread, all the changes I make are (I believe (of course this is just my opinion, but I think its a good one)) necessary.
So a complaint I have is that there are many translators out there who reject some or all revisions to the script...which is very disheartening, specially when time and effort has gone into it *and* the change is something like an "on" to an "at" or something- small changes that don't mean much individually but give the sentence much better sense (which the translator, up to their eyes in dual languages, may not be able to see at the time).
I know Japanese, but I'm not good enough to provide complete translations, my English is much better.
[ps the standard of my personal postings and the standard of my proofreads is quite different- in my posts I'm more casual, in my proofreads I'm trying to get it right lol]
