Hong Kong Gets Manga on Their Mobiles

+ posted by njt in Manga News on Sep 4, 2009 17:34

Wiredvision.jp posted on their site about Hong Kong launching their first ever mobile manga portal. BitWay working along with SmarTone is making this happen bringing titles such as Naruto, and Dr. Slump translated in Chinese.

A similar case happened with Docomo launching a Europe based cell phone comic service back in June.

It being a few months since then, can any of the Europeans out there tell us how it's been accepted? Are there many people downloading and reading manga on their phones? Or is it a pretty rare thing?

i don't know about using manga on a phone. but i do use it for the psp, which is mobile. i'm sure if i had a phone that had the picture capabilities that my psp has i would read manga on my phone. (like the iphone, new google phone, black berry storm)
its a really fun concept i remember going to school and reading manga on the bus ride over, fridays were amazing, i'd be jumping out of my fricking seat reading the SJ weeklys.

I just think this is a useless idea. I'd rather have a paper copy then a digital copy any day. I get my "fix" online every week with digital copies sure. I also however get the actual manga when it's in my area and I have the money for it.

Never would you see me paying for a digital copy of Manga when I can get the paper version.

It also depends much on the mobile that you are using. Not all mobile have a wide screen like those of Samsung Omina or Iphone. And I rather not have my manga being seen in such a small screen in those of Sony Erisson or Nokia.

Are we going to see them in panels or pages? How much does the end consumer have to pay? There are still lots of questions left unanswered for this one. Unless a good economic business model is come up, I doubt the users will be willing to pick it up.

Granted I'm one of those old-fashioned folks who only uses their phone for calls and to stumble through the occasional text message, so I'm not the best judge. Though it would seem that so much detail would be lost on such a small screen, especially with some of the splash pages.
