Shigeyuki Hayashi - Kicking Anime Up a Notch

+ posted by njt in Anime News on Sep 13, 2009 15:14

Joongangdaily.joins.com writes about how Shigeyuki Hayashi is trying something new in movie animation.

Famous for Metropolis, The Galaxy Express 999, and Neo Tokyo his latest work is called "Yona Yona Penguin". Working with a French production company called Denis Friedman Productions and the company Madhouse (seem to be seeing them a lot lately >.>), he uses a new 3D format which looks a lot like something out of Street Fighter 4.

Hayashi states: "This exciting blend will be presented as a new style of 3D animation never seen before,” as well as saying, "I reckon it’s about time to try something new.”

He spent a year hand drawing the production sketches and outline for the film, wanting to give it a touch of "Japanese flavor" so it can be told apart from Pixar.

Is he heading in the right direction? Check out the trailer and let us know what you think. Movie due out this Christmas.

i feel like this is a normal chrismas 3d animation(for japanese family only or lolicon?)weird charater not too special and not for my age group~it seem?

i also felt the cast-er sound don't match(???too clever control and not that cute?) by watching the trailer
they also show no sign of human activity(loneliness)(seem very strang and unhappy?)

i am hardly little impress ?how about you guys, any feel the same????
get me back the us/uk long thin leg charater~~~who i alway enjoy to watch

The character feel seems different from traditional animes. I would prefer the normal art style. >.>

I don't feel any difference from this style than other 3Ds out there, besides the large eyes. Perhaps it's because the video is too small to give it justice?

To me, the animation that truly had a unique touch were films like vexille and appleseed, being a sort of frankenstein of cell-shading and more traditional 3d.

I would love to see a truly street-fighter 4 style cell shading with sumi-e streaks. I guess something more akin to Okami, but that's asking for a lot, I'm sure...
