-> RTS Page for Naruto 313

Sure this happens on the threads themselves but this thread is to collect them all together. Let's talk about this weeks episode.

-What was hard/ confusing?
-What is creating problems with the fans
-What needs clarifying?

For me it was...

こいつ、猫舌じゃあねーのかよ
Though NGs rendering was quite good. :smile-big

and

すごい気になるな
Because Naruto use the same sentence last time. Did you use the same one for your trans?

and finally (for the fans)
オレたちのノルマはあと一匹…しらみつぶしだな
couldn't read that myself (last part) but NG has "coming the countryside".

Does this last quote mean the Xs on their map are the place they have looked already, or are they the sights of the jinchuriku?

One more point, if they are after (Naruto?) in the fire country you would have to assume the "your the last one" in 312 was not related to jinchuriki but instead a band of ninja who had been slaughtered? Very odd, imo.

Indeed, I was at a loss on what to use :s. Nihongaeri's usage and notes helpe clear things up though :).

While it's the same phrase, you can keep it the same or you can change it to match the character more... that's something people don't do enough I believe.

Some think the same japanese always requires the same English. One example that comes to mind, is the Naruto movie manga (I helped someone with the translation... though they didn't take all that I suggested) anyways, the princess character liked to use the phrase "ばかじゃない" and in different situations, the feeling/meaning of it would be a bit different thus needing something different in english, but the person kept it the same throughout... and I thought it lost the meaning that the person was trying to express as well as making anything other than "natural" english...

I took it as just a general "going through each place looking, but what I realized I lacked when I read NG's is that he captured em saying it in a "it's been a pain in the ass too" So not only have they been checking all the other countries one after the other, that they are getting sick of it... and that hopefully the fire country will be their last one (wether or not they realized that Naruto was there still or not is a hard guess, they could have gone through the other countries just looking for"Nii".... but yeah- not sure.

Perhaps it could mean she was the last of that clan, or perhaps the last of female jinchuuriki or... well we still don't know for sure what that comment was refering to...

Kakashi was copying Naruto.

Naruto got pissed off when an interesting conversation was cut off by an interruption. Then the same thing happened to Kakashi so he said what Naruto had just said. Kakashi has a thing for copying what people say.

Maybe you knew all that already :)

If you translated the two lines in different ways, the humour wouldn't get through.

nah I think if he intended to be JUST like naruto in a gag type way, he probably would have used the exact same line that naruto used...

すっげー気になるってばよ!

as opposed to

すごい気になるな・・・

But I dunno, that's me.. but as I see it I think it should be translated to match their personality as opposed to doing the same trans for both of them.
Also the fact that Naruto was saying it directly to Kakashi and how kakashi was talking to himself, could be reason enough to go with different translations there too....

that's just me though^^

well at least this chapter made sense of the "I want her to kill me" line from last week. He really *did* say that I guess since we see him being killed this week. I assume he becomes more powerful when he dies or something.

I guess, in the case of stupid sounding lines you've just got to ignore your brain and translate what's there.

Any word on the 二位 part yet? Name or rank?

I'm leaning more towards name...

I completely forgot to respond to this thread...

-The "cat-tongue" line...

This is what I felt was important about translating that line...
1. It identifies the nibi as a cat and also identifies the beast's attack as being very "hot"
2. It doesn't sound completely random to the reader
3. It's a play off of some established English idiom or cliche phrase
4. (This part is maybe the most important) It sounds ridiculously corny

Also as a bonus, if you can sneak mention of "tongue" in there somehow then all the better... I think it's pretty much impossible to do the above without making the line sound semi-forced, but I'm pretty happy with the translation I came up with (at least in the department of sounding corny, if nothing else)

-The Kakashi copies Naruto line...

Yeah, I just copied Naruto's previous line as is. I do agree with NJT that implementing some type of marker differentiating the speech-styles of the two would be nice, but, well, I'm not all that creative in that respect...

-The "lice-crushing" line...

I think the main problem of the line is do you interpret it as an assessment of want they have been and will be doing, or merely as an explanation of what they will be doing.

The Xs I interpret as just being places they've searched... and the "you're the only one left" from the last chapter I just interpret as "we've already killed all of the other shinobi that were with you". Obviously I don't have a crystal ball that lets me look into the future, though...

-Dogma?

I think I saw 戒律 translated as "Buddhist precepts" or the like in a few places... Its use here, however, just refers to religious precepts governing conduct in general, so not of a specific religion. I went with "dogma" because, one, I like the word dogma (just because) and, two, in my experience "dogma" has a tendency to be used with a negative connotation so I felt it fit Hidan's thinking of it as being a pain in the arse.

-Name or status?

I suppose, after thinking about it, that 二位 being a name isn't all that ridiculous given that corny names are pretty much par-for-the-course in Naruto... Still a bit unsure about it though... I just wish they wouldn't have tried to be "clever" and focused on making a statement that wasn't inherently ambiguous...

thanks for the input.

The cat part was good! I can't think of many cat idioms excepy "curiosity killed..." or "like a ...on a hot tin roof" but none seem to fit. こいつ、猫舌じゃあねーのかよ

No time for a cat nap with that thing around! (misses the fire)
woah! That was one hot cat-call! (crappy)
A fire ball?! Man, she's no scaredy cat!
man, look at what the cat spat out! (from "dragged in")
The cat that got the cream, huh? Or in this case the chillis!

I'm pretty sure nii Is s name now. I had a few people check it out. I think the grammar would fail if it wasn't....though I couldn't tell.

Something like "nii no yugito". perhaps?

Lice crushing sounds loike a dull task. I like your "combing" or perhaps "needle in a haystack" or something similar?
