#10 EVA
p3
The one who came to the vast and endless space is...?
p4/5
2
p1
No. 3 container secured!
Make sure you bring it back safely, Yuuto
p2
I know
box: Core Space Academy Extravehicular Activity Training Station
p3
p4
Contact
p5/6
Make sure you secure the retrieved object firmly
Yeah yeah
//Kasugai-san, you've been talking a lot like a mother lately
Wha...!
3
p1
H- How rude!!
I'm just thinking of everyone...
p2
I'm kidding, I'm kidding
//I understand
Thank you, Kasugai-san
p3
...
I... If you understand, then it's fine
p4
Give me the location of the next object for retrieval
Roger
//You check the propellant as well
p5
Quite a decent performance, Subaru
Thank you very much, Instructor Shitara
p6
...But
Why are we doing this kind of a debris collection exercise?
4
p1
After the space elevator was completed and it became easy to get into space
It became possible to systematically dispose of the debris...
p2
But it turned out to be the opposite
Precisely because it became easy to get into space, this training became necessary
p3
The opposite...?
p4
Certainly, given the current ease of reaching space, the disposal of things like satellites that have outlived their span, that we couldn't do in the past
Is now possible to do both systematically and safely
5
p1
However, as a great number of people have moved to reside in space, the amount of garbage has increased
It's natural for garbage to increase where people live
p2
Well, most of the garbage is properly disposed of
p3
But because anyone can take a leisure trip into space now
There's garbage that gets thrown out without being disposed of
p4
These are objects we pro astronauts collect in the early stages
This training is for that purpose
p5
I see
So there are jobs like this as well
p6
If you keep looking only toward deep space, your place to return to will get demolished by the debris
I get it
6
p1
Even I
Think that now I have to seriously realize my full potential!!
p2
Hmmmm
p3
Yuuto, I got the retrieval object. I'm sending the coordinates.
//If you retrieve that one, today's exercise is done
Roger
p4
So it's on the opposite side of the station from here
p5
Excuse me, I'm off
Yeah
p6
7
p1
p2/3
Kuh
//Whoa
That was close!!
I rushed too much
p4
That's it!!
p5
p6
Alright!!
This is the end...
p7
8
p1
Uwaaah!
p2
Shi...!
What's wrong, Yuuto!?
p3
What are you doing!? That was dangerous!!
p4
Minorikawa!!
Hmph!
//Early bird gets the worm
p5
p6
There's no early or late in debris collection!!
9
p1
What does a class dropout understand!
p2
Go mooch off your daddy, Junior!
What did you say!!?
p3/4
Minorikawa, you bastard! I'll kick your ass!!
Yuuto, calm down. Your oxygen consumption has increased
!!
Dammit!
p5
What, Minorikawa-kun again?
Yeah
10
p1
He's always getting in people's way
p2
But I wonder why Minorikawa-kun is in class B?
If you look at his grades, he's class A level
p3
That's...
//Because he doesn't have the cooperative spirit
...True
p4
Anyway, since today is the last day of EVA training, let's finish the rest quickly
Roger
p5
p6
The return shuttle will depart shortly
All ASCANs are to board and stand by
p7
Huh, Yuuto!?
Bathroom
p8
We'll go on to the shuttle then
Yeah
11
p1
Haaa~~~ A lot came out
p2
Huh!?
The shuttle entry is locked?
p3
Over here, Yuuto!!
p4
Is that shuttle No. 2?
You were late, Yuuto, so No. 1 has filled up already
What about Gaku and Shibata-san?
They're in No. 1
p5
p6
We will now return to the GEO Station
Everyone, check your seat belts!!
12
p1
p2
Commencing deceleration!!
p3/4
p5
...
p6
I'm still not used to the concept of *decelerating in order to catch up* to something in orbit
p7
The laws of motion in orbit
p8
Floating in space doesn't mean that one is outside the force of gravity. Even in a geostationary orbit 36,000 km above Earth's surface, there's a constant force of gravity equal to about 2% of what one experiences on the surface itself.
And yet, the reason you don't fall to Earth is that because you keep moving at a set horizontal speed, that velocity and the force of gravity balance each other, keeping you revolving around Earth. That circular path is called an "orbit".
13
p1
When two objects are revolving in the same orbit, the way one catches up to the other is by decelerating rather than accelerating
But why is it necessary to decelerate...?
p2
When one accelerates in orbit, the balance between the velocity (centrifugal force) and the force of gravity is disrupted, and the object shifts to a higher orbit
On the other hand, if one decelerates then, pulled by gravity, one shifts to a lower orbit
p3
The distance between two objects increases when the orbit gets higher, and decreases when it gets lower
In other words, decelerating and shifting to a lower orbit allows one to revolve faster and consequently catch up sooner
p4
In short, the inside route is faster...
p5
!!
p6
What!?
14
p1
Debris alarm
p2
Debris!?
p3
We're approaching a cloud of micro-debris!!
We'll run into it if we stay on this course!!
p4
Kill the reverse thrust!!
Break out of the orbit that will lead us toward the debris!!
Roger!!
p5
p6
It's not working, we won't make it in time!!
We'll brush against it at this rate!!
p7
Accelerate and increase altitude!!
15
p1
All hands, brace for impact!!
A sudden depressurization is possible, so put on your helmets!!
p2
D- Debris...
Are we going to be alright!?
p3
Calm down
If you deal with it like you've been trained, there won't be a problem!!
p4/5
p6
Accelerating!!
16
p1
p2
Guuuh...
p3
I- I knew it...
There's a lot of debris still left
p4
Sensors can't pick up micro-debris
At this altitude, the speed is 3 km/s
//Normally, the bumper would protect us, but...
p5
Here it is!!
p6
p7
We made it!!
17
p1
p2
We're passing by the debris cloud
No effect on the ship!!
p3
p4
!!
p5
No
Oh no!!
18-19
Shuttle No. 1...
20
p1
No. 1 is taking hits!!
Hull breached!!
//Depressurization confirmed!!
p2
Gaku!!
Shibata-san!!
The unexpected in space! And then... death!!
