Ice Revolution
act 8: A Sky So Blue
[Side text: Regardless of Kaoru's feelings, Masaki glares at Saaya...]
2
Flashback!Kaoru: I think that you could give her the sense of security she needs... really help her work through this. // I just couldn't manage to heal her wounds...
Saaya: ......What...... // ...were you doing?
3
Masaki: ............It... // ...It's none of your business... what I was doing.
Saaya: ......... // If you've got the time to be messing about, then make sure you get in plenty of practice. // An amateur like you needs all the time in the rink she can get.
Masaki: ......t up...
Saaya: Huh?
4
Masaki: I TOLD YOU TO FUCKING SHUT UP! // (..................)
Saaya: Uncouth as ever, I see... // Is shouting at people all you're good for?
5
Masaki: I hear...... / ...you got those legs of yours injured, huh?
Saaya: ...Wh... // Why do you know about...?
Masaki: Well, you know what...?
6
Masaki: I wish they'd never healed.
7
Nao: ! // Masaki?
8
Nao: Oh, you silly girl...... // He never actually said one way or the other, did he? / I think it's a little early to go deciding that Kaoru has feelings for that Saaya girl.
Masaki: ...But... // He looked so damn
worried about her...
Nao: Guys like him are kind to anyone and everyone. // He's kind to you as well, isn't he? // ...Why are you still looking like that? // Oh, of course... he's going off to Canada, isn't he.
9
Masaki: To be honest... // ...that's a bit of a relief...
Nao: ......... // What do you mean?
Masaki: ........................ It's not like... I ever had a chance with him. // So I figure... maybe it's better for him to just disappear completely...
Nao: ...Have you even been listening to me? // You can't say for sure that you don't have a chance. You're never going to get anywhere if you lose all hope this easily.
Masaki: ......
Nao: Oh, I see... / So your feelings for Kaoru were never that serious after all? / I must say, I'm disappointed!
Masaki: !
10
Masaki: That's not true! / I really do bare about him! / That's not gonna change, no matter what! // I love Kaoru, damn it!! // (............But... But Kaoru......) // Just now, Katakura was...
Nao: Yes?
Masaki: She was so damn cute, I couldn't take it...
11
Masaki: That long hair, that milky skin, those huge eyes and slender limbs... // Everything about her just screams "feminine"... and it makes me so jealous... // Any guy would fall for her... it's only natural. // And Kaoru's no different... // No matter how hard I try, I can't match that... // It's just... not fair...
[TN: *slaps Masaki* You're at least ten times as cute as Saaya is.]
Nao: .........
12
Nao: If anybody's "not fair", then it's you, Masaki.
Masaki: ...Huh...?
Nao: The beauty that Saaya possesses is something the achieved through years of effort. // Whereas you... you only achieved what you have right now thanks to my help. // You see? Kind of cheating, isn't it?
Masaki: .........
Nao: All you're doing is selfishly deriding all the work that she has put in. // Unreasonably deciding that you can't match it.
Masaki: I'm not -
Nao: And out of that spite towards your own shortcomings, you had the nerve to tell that girl...
13
Nao: ...that you wished the wounds that had cut so deep they drove her to distrust the rest of the world... // ...had "never healed".
Masaki: !!
Nao: Consider that a little. // If you were placed in her situation... // How would you feel?
14
Masaki: I'm... the worst...
Nao: As long as you understand.
Masaki: Wh... What should I do?!
Nao: First of all, you should apologise to Saaya. // Apologise sincerely and frankly, as many times as it takes for her to forgive you.
Masaki: ......... // Right!
Nao: And then, one more thing...
15
Nao: Work as hard as you can at your skating.
Masaki: Skating...?
Nao: No matter what you may think... // When you skated out there at the Ice Show... // You were utterly beautiful. // Far more so than Saaya.
16
Masaki: (!)
Nao: Besides which... // You enjoyed it too, now, didn't you?
Masaki: (..................)
Nao: [aside]hm?[/aside]
17
Masaki: Thank you, Nao-san. // I'll work... // ...as hard as I can!
Nao: Hahaha... // Now that's the Oosawa Masaki I know.
Masaki: (Striking out at Katakura... // ...that was a moronic thing to do. // I have to apologise!)
18
Masaki: (Katakura... // Is she not here today?) // Agh!
Sanjou: You're...!
Masaki: K... Kaoru's coach... ehm... uh... T... T...
Sanjou: The name's "Sanjou".
19
Sanjou: It's a little late for you to be here... did you sneak in?
Masaki: Y... Yes. What were you doing here, Coach Sanjou?
Sanjou: Oh, well... I have to leave early for Canada the day after tomorrow, and I just remembered I'd left this here. // There are places I have to go with Kaoru tomorrow, so I thought I ought to pick it up while I have the chance.
Masaki: (I see...... so Kaoru... won't be coming tomorrow...)
Sanjou: ...... // There's nothing to worry about, you know... Kaoru will be back in Autumn for the Japan Junior Championships.
Masaki: Huh?
20
Masaki: Autumn...? Like,
this Autumn?! / He'll be back this Autumn?!
Sanjou: Y... Yes, that's right...
Masaki: You're kidding me...... / I thought he might not be coming back again for years...! // Well, it's only May, so Autumn's still a long way off, but...
Sanjou: I see you like Kaoru as well.
Masaki: Huh...? N - No, I -
Sanjou: I rather like him myself.
Masaki: Eh?
Sanjou: I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I still have a long way to go as a coach...
21
Sanjou: I haven't been getting results; all of my other students left me long ago for other coaches, but Kaoru alone stayed firmly by my side. // I told him not to worry about me, but he's a very kind boy, of course...
Masaki: (That's so like him...)
Sanjou: I owe an awful lot to Kaoru. // I want to do whatever I can for him until the very end.
Masaki: (The very end......?)
Sanjou: Now then, I think I'll be leaving. I enjoyed your performance at the Ice Show very much. // I won't mention your being here to anyone, so keep up the good work!
22
Masaki: OSU!! // (That's Kaoru's coah for you... // What a charmer...)
[Box: The next day]
Masaki: I'm sorry about yesterday!!!
23
Masaki: I... I honestly regret those terrible things I said! // I'll never do it again! // I don't know what to say... // Katakura...
Saaya: ......... // How about "I apologise"?
Masaki: I apologise most sincerely, Katakura-sama!! // Ah... // Katakura!
24
Saaya: Oh, shut up. // Get down to some practice already. / You amateur!
Masaki: Ngh...
Saaya: [aside]hmph![/aside]
Saionji: Y... // You want to enter yourself for the Japan Junior Championships...?!
25
Masaki: Yeah!
Saionji: Wh... What nonsense is this?! You're nowhere near ready for the national Championships! // I have no intention of entering you in tournaments while you're still in middle school!
[Note: * Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships: A national tournament for skaters in middle- and high-school who have achieved 6-kyu; candidates must achieve victory in the regional preliminaries to qualify.]
Masaki: Huh~?! Why not?! You let me take part in the Ice Show right off the bat, didn't you?!
Saionji: The anything-goes nature of an Ice Show, and the elaborate, strictly-regulated programs of a contest are two entirely different matters! // You're just not there yet.
Masaki: We can't know that unless we try!
26
Saionji: In figure-skating, each contestant is assigned points for each element, each technique, by a panel of judges. // Saaya's straight line step could achieve a considerably high score, but yours would hardly earn any points whatsoever.
Masaki: But... back at the show, the audience loved me as well as her!
Saionji: As I said, shows and contests are two entirely different matters. // Counter... Bracket... Rocker... Loop... // You have yet to learn the kind of moves that could earn you the points you need in competitive skating. // And you don't have the right to take part, either.
Masaki: ! // You don't have to go that far~~!
Saionji: S - Sorry... I'm not trying to belittle you here. // But just like in karate you have a grading system of "kyu" and "dan", figure skating too has a system of "Badge Tests" from Shokyu to 8-kyu.
[Diagram: 8-kyu / 7-kyu / 6-kyu / 5-kyu / 4-kyu / 3-kyu / 2-kyu / Shokyu // Difficult // Easy]
[Note: * Badge Test: Beginning with Shokyu, then 1-kyu, continuing up to the top level of 8-kyu. A series of examinations in which the candidate must perform a variety of techniques before a panel of judges, who will then give a passing or failing grade.]
[TN: I originally translated this note wrong, because I was misled by the diagram, which
is wrong. The diagram implies that 2-kyu follows Shokyu, but as is made extremely clear next chapter, Shokyu is followed by 1-kyu, which is missing completely from the diagram. I wonder if they'll fix this in the volume release...]
27
Masaki: Badge... tests...
Saionji: The Japan Junior Championships require all contestants to have achieved the elite rank of 6-kyu. // And you'd have to achieve that rank by the first of September.
Masaki: (6-kyu! By the first of September...!) // I'll do it! I achieved my black belt in karate faster than anyone else! I'll just have to do the same -
Saionji: No, no. First of all, these tests are only held once or twice a month - there's simply not enough time. // There's more to learn about figure skating than you realise. // Spins, step and spiral sequences... Even when it comes to jumps, all you can do is the Axel...
28
Masaki: "Accel"?
[BubbleSFX: vroom vroom]
Saionji: That jump you've been doing where you leap straight ahead! // I can't believe you've been doing it without even knowing the name...
Masaki: You see? You see? I'm incredible, right? So I can enter the -
Saionji: BUT~~~! // What I'm saying is, that Axel is only one of six separate types of jumps that you are required to master!
Masaki: Six?! There's that many?
Saionji: [aside]huh?![/aside] // Y... Yes!
Masaki: Now you mention it, I
have seen Katakura doing some kind of backwards jump thing...
Saionji: At any rate, I was thinking of teaching you how to perform a spin today. // So forget about the Championships for the moment, and let's get down to practice!
29
Saionji: Now, listen up. // In its simplest form, a spin essentially requires you to use both of your legs to rotate your body like so. // Now let's see you give it a go!
Masaki: ......... // Here goes nothing. // Hah!
30
Masaki: Unhh! Hah! // Hahh!
Saionji: No, no, no. // First of all, you twist your body around. // Then you return your body to an upright position, and that provides the rotational energy.
Masaki: .........
Saionji: You're just trying to spin by swinging your arms about.
Masaki: ...Sounds more complicated than I thought... I've never really done anything quite like this before...
Saionji: No, I daresay you haven't. Furthermore, there's a concept called the "moment of inertia"... / ...which essentially dictates that if you pull your arms in like so, bringing your body in about its axis, your speed of rotation will naturally increase.
31
Masaki: Hm. // Hyahhh! // Ugh... // Huh~? I fell over...
Saionji: You must be sure to keep your blades parallel, or you won't achieve the correct motion. // One more time.
Masaki: R... Right.
Saionji: No... / Your toes should be supporting your body weight. // Pull your arms in nice and quickly... / And keep that head up straight.
32
Masaki: Ughhh... I just keep falling on my ass...
Saionji: Do you see now? // Figure skating is not a simple skill. Saaya may make it look easy, but she can only do that because she has been building up her skills since a very young age.
Masaki: Ugh... // [aside]how many times do I have to hear
that today...?[/aside]
Saionji: Let's just work on widening the range of techniques you can perform one by one for now. // All right?!
33
Masaki: Ungh... // Dammit! // [aside]ahhh, my eyes are spinning... // that's not nice...[/aside] // (Just how high do I have to climb... // ...before I'll be ready for those Japan Junior Championships...?)
34
Masaki: (Is it really no good unless you've trained up from a young age like Katakura? // I don't even know where it is I stand right now... // And Kaoru? // Kaoru... I want to see him... // Kaoru...)
35
Masaki: U... Unhh... // Huh? // Morning?! // Crap, I can't be found here... // Gotta get out quick! // Gahhhh, I forgot to let my old man know where I was... // He's gonna
murder me...! // Hm?
36
Girls: Kaoru-ku~~~n! // You're not going to forget me, are you~? // You can always come back if you get lonely~~!
37
Kaoru: (Masaki-chan... // Is she okay...? // That certainly wasn't the best of ways to part... // I don't like leaving Japan without setting things right...)
Sanjou: Well then, shall we, Kaoru?
Kaoru: Of course.
Masaki: KAORU~~~~~!!
38
Masaki: Wait up~~~~!
People: Agh - hey!
Sanjou: Why, that's...
Kaoru: Masaki-chan!
Masaki: [aside]*pant* // *pant* / *pant*[/aside] // Thank goodness... I made it... // *pant* // *pant*
39
Kaoru: I didn't think you were...
Masaki: Hahah... 'Course I was gonna come!
Kaoru: And Katakura...
Masaki: I'll see what I can do about getting on with her, yeah? // So don't you go worrying yourself - just do your best out there!
Kaoru: Okay! // Thank you!
40
Staff: Young sir... your flight will be departing shortly...
Kaoru: Ah - yes.
Staff: That's enough, all right?
Masaki: ...... // Kaoru... just one more thing.
Kaoru: Hm?
Masaki: I'll see you at the Junior Championships!
41
Kaoru: Yes... / The Junior Championships... // I'll be looking forward to it!
42-43
[no text just nice picture]
44
Masaki: (I don't care if it's "impossible"...)
45
Masaki: (I'll do it... // ...no matter what. // See you then, Kaoru.)
