I hear it's just as easy to learn as Spanish or Pig-Latin.
Personally, I find Japanese relatively easy to pick up, but I think it varies a lot between people. I have a definite gift for languages, which helps, of course, but I'm sure anyone could learn it if they really wanted to... and had access to a good teacher, because I think that makes all the difference. Of course, a lot of my knowledge of the language is self-taught, because my actual language course hasn't progressed nearly far enough to cover a lot of the things I use in translating... but I've still benefited a hell of a lot from being taught the language for a year so far at university.
At any rate, I wouldn't call Japanese hard, per se... just very different from European languages. Personally, I find it much easier to form accurate sentences in Japanese than I do in German, despite having studied German for much longer; I find Japanese a much more elegant, very logical language. The stumbling point for most people learning it is just that that logic is so different from that of languages they know. And of course when you're dealing with the written language, there's the whole issue of learning kanji, which is a whole separate challenge in itself, but very satisfying, I find. But of course there's always kanji dictionaries and the like for when, like me, you really don't know enough of them yet ~_~
