Junk Record of the Last Hero Volume 4

en
+ posted by Gottheim as translation on Aug 31, 2009 11:23 | Go to Junk Record of the Last Hero

Author's foreword: This fourth volume, which ended up being released at the end of the year, was supposed to have been released much sooner. However I got ill and that caused it to be released two months past schedule. So I'd like to take this opportunity and apologize to my fans for the wait. I'm really sorry.

What I came to realize is that our body really is a necessity to get anything done. I thought I knew that without it I wouldn't be able to do anything, but when something really traumatic comes its way you find out how hard it is to deal with you not being able to do anything. This stands true for manga characters as well, in that all things exist solely because there are healthy people out there to do them.

Take great care of yourselves, dear readers. The previous year has been an unlucky one... (and I forgot to do an exorcism at that).

[tn: A big "Thank you" to njt for figuring out the 2nd sentence of the second paragraph. I kept the other sentences too, since your writing style is not too far off from my own.]

EXCLUSIVE!!
The abducted girl's family had already fallen apart!! The mother's affair with her daughter's classmate!!
The scene of the adulterous transgression!!

The kidnapping and sequestration case involving a schoolgirl in Suginami, (Tokyo) this month is still fresh in our memories. At some point in the afternoon, [...]ko-san (18) parted ways with her friends at a family restaurant located in the vicinity, only to be kidnapped by Fujimi Masakazu-yougisha (55) and sequestrated in his personal home for two weeks. A traumatizing event.

The mental shock was really great for the victim, [...]ko-san, who had to be hospitalized. Furthermore, Fujimi-yougisha was found grievously wounded upon arrest, and is now in the hands of an intensive care unit... Hum? ... The criminal, in a critical state? Why? A violent struggle during the arrest? Or possibly the implication of a third party? In any case, he was gravely injured, and with no word from [...]ko-san, the truth of the matter in still unknown.
::::::::::::::::::::::::
The Gordian knot is complicated even further (or maybe not, one can't tell) by the discovery of a scandal! Who would have guessed? The victim's mother (45) and one of her classmates, Boy A (18) had an adulterous affair!
Left picture: right after sending her daughter to school, she frequently heads for the young boy's place, cooking ingredients in hand. Once there, she starts to prepare breakfast, and... Would you believe it? So she was the main dish? And thus starts a jaw-dropping scene in the kitchen room (photo). Then the two of them disappear from view. Probably moving to the bedroom for a round... A bright-faced, perfectly "satisfied wife" leaves the room after that. Those housewives in the neighborhood who know her well comment: "Now that you mention it, she's been supiciously seductive, lately."

In addition, the case is entwined with the one that is currently causing the most unrest, that of the superman. This month, Boy A lost his parents to the Suginami fire incident caused by the superman, and was taken to his childhood friend, [...]ko-san's house for a short while. Then he bought a high-class designer apartment house with his parents' heritage and started to live on his own. His affair with the married woman most likely started sometime around this point. A former classmate of his explains, smiling: "The guy was bullied, and he'd stopped coming to classes..." He hasn't been going to school for the whole spring, and is currently a NEET [tn: Not in Employment, Education or Training], so to speak.
:::::::::::::::::::::
"I would have sworn he was her boyfriend", says another voice, putting her hand before her mouth. This is [...]ko-san's colleague, from the family restaurant where she worked during the summer vacations. Boy A would come to her working place quite often, and they would fondly speak to each other, she says. They were getting along well, then? In which case, the mother was laying hands on her own daughter's boyfriend...? We can do little more than speculate, at best.
::::::::::::::::
[...]ko-san is currently hospitalized. Mental repercussions from her kidnapping and sequestration, her mother's affair with her childhood friend... Thinking of how scarred emotionally the sensitive 18 year-old girl already is makes the situation that much more unbearable.

Left pic: The mother, on her way to boy A's apartment.
Right pic: On the premises, time for some action. Of the "hot" variety.

Tsujidou: Yo!
Hiro: Tsujidou-san?//Something going on? What's the suit for?
Tsujidou: A meeting, at the company. I came straight from there.
Hiro: It's the first time I see you like this.
Tsujidou: Gives a good impression.//Actually, I've been relieved from my duties towards you, and somebody else is gonna take you in charge. I'm just here to let you know.

104
Hiro: Eh? Really? But why?
Tsujidou: Oh, well. Stuff happens. Grown-ups' business and whatnot.
Hiro: That counselling thing. How does the contract work? Does it just end if I say "no"?
Tsujidou: The money's taken from what your dead parents have left for you, until you hit your twenties./Of course, you're free to cancel it.//You won't get the money back, though./Oh, well...//But aren't things fine just the way they are? You won't run out of people to talk to./Human relations. The kind I've told you about. This is what a guy like you needs.
Hiro: Err... Will you be in charge of somebody else, Tsujidou-san?

105
Tsujidou: No idea. That's for the top brass to decide./See ya. Take good care of yourself.//And get outside more, too.//It's not about getting out. It's about letting your heart get in contact with the outside world.

106
Tsujidou: Break out of your shell and get out.

107
Hiro: (Getting.../outside.../I don't know.)*slam*

108
Chikaishi: You look like crap.
Fujiwara: Mh?//Course I do. Do you know how many times I've had to explain what happened at Kameyama?
Chikaishi: What do you think?
Fujiwara: What do you mean, "what"?/I'm talking about how we deal with the superman.
Chikaishi: There's talk even among the higher-ups about whether the case should be taken out of the police's hands.
Fujiwara: Yeah, maybe./How about seeking out the Self-Defense Force [tn: Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, a.k.a the local (proto-)army], or the Us military for help...?

109
Fujiwara: We're policemen, right? Taking on monsters is way out of our league.*clank*
Fujiwara: I'm not interested in how we're going to capture the superman.//What I want is to find out who he is and go arrest them.
Chikaishi: ....
Fujiwara: Maybe I should put an anti-superman special squad together. Or use the SAT. [tn: Special Assault Teams, whatever that's supposed to mean. Not Japanese, since the raw itself contains a footnote in which SAT is likened to something that actually is.]/I'll corner this guy from somewhere else. Right?//And then, how about no longer calling him a superman?/He's a criminal. Calling him by a number will do.

Kaji: Fujiwara-san!!
Fujiwara: Did you find something?
Kaji: This PHOTO EYE'S, from Kameyama Publications dates from a little while ago!! I've checked it up!/Here!! Just have a look!

Kaji: This issue was released two weeks before the disturbance caused by the superman!

111
Fujiwara: And the boy is involved once again./The connection's so obvious it's almost painful.*slap*
Kaji: Ye... Yes sir!
Fujiwara: (I don't know if the boy and the superman are the same or if there's just that much of a strong connection between them.../But this time, there's no way I'm letting him get away!!//No way!

Baldie: Uuuh?/What are you talking about? ...
Suzuki: Listen up, okay? Walking with lit cigarettes is forbidden in this district.
Baldie: What's wrong with a smoke while I'm walking?!//Dang it.

Fujiwara: So whaddaya think about the boy? 'Sit okay if I drag him out a little?
Chikaishi: Hummmmm./There should be no problem. Not with such a conspicuous connection...
Fujiwara: Oh, well. This interrogation will more or less have to be voluntary. Actually, I thought I ought to search his house too.
Chikaishi: Easy. This is a minor, you're talking about.
Fujiwara: .......//And maybe a violent criminal.
Chikaishi: Yeah, maybe.

Kaji: Fujiwara-san. Are you serious?!!*step* *step*
Fujiwara: I am. We go now and we get him.//He's still in his room at the moment, right?*bam*
Kaji: Tani-san is currently tailing him..../But he hasn't left his room at all.
Fujiwara: Him and I have lots of talking to do. Let's take our time and hear him out.*wail*
Fujiwara: This might be a matter of one, maybe two full nights.
Kaji: Sigh.

TV: Newsflash. Today, on a road in the Nakano district, a man unexpectedly amputated a passer by of an arm.//The culprit, as we may call him, took offense that the victim was walking with a lit cigarette.*ding-dong* *ding-dong*
Hiro: !*bolt*
TV: He severed the arm with a sharp tool and disappeared.
Hiro: Who's there?*creak*

131
Fujiwara: Yo! It's been a while.
Hiro: !!//Detective... -san.
Fujiwara: I've got plenty of questions for you, so you're coming with us.
Hiro: Right away?
Fujiwara: Right away. Even though you're totally free to refuse./It has to do with the superman.
Hiro: (...../Wha... What now? The thought he might come at me directly never crossed my mind. No way...)

132
Hiro: (On the other hand if I just say no, I'll look suspicious... So.)//Understood. I'll go. *cree*
Hiro: Just give me a minute to prepare myself.

Suzuki: But you know what? Golfing on this riverbed is forbidden.
Sign: GOLFING FORBIDDEN!!
Golfing is forbidden on this riverbed, as it is a disturbance to those who reside in the vicinity. We humbly ask that you refrain from it. Thank you for your comprehension. The riverbed management (staff).

Golfer: Wha...
Suzuki: What happens if the ball flies towards a bunch of kids playing near the river or into a nearby house?
Golfer: Shu... Shut up!! I'm not the only one doing this./Stop bothering me.
Suzuki: Do you have any idea whether what you're doing is right or wrong?/If you're so eager to see a "ball" flying, I'll make it fly for you.
*BASH*
*SPLASH*
Suzuki: .......

136
Sign: Inquiry Room B
Fujiwara: You've spared me a lot of trouble by coming quietly./And I didn't want trouble, even of the minor variety.
Hiro: Don't worry... If I am suspected in any way, this is a good opportunity to clear my name. That's what I think.
Fujiwara: I see. So you're confident, aren't you?/You're changing, you know. Normally, an underage boy in your situation would have gone batshit insane, and there'd be no calming him down.//But you. Strangely enough, you are calm.//You look funny to me.
Hiro: ......

137
Chikaishi: So this is the boy?
Kaji: Yes sir.
Chikaishi: Ummmm.........
Fujiwara: First, let's proceed by chronological order, shall we?/The su... I mean the "Black" appeared for the first time somewhere near your school.//There, he assaulted a bunch of youngsters who were hanging around a convenience store.//After that, he attacked several kids in the same grade as you... Why?
Hiro: .....
Fujiwara: A little investigation later, we learned the group of kids he attacked were from your school./And that they'd been bullying you before.

138
Man: Uh?
Woman: ?
Man: What's that?

142
Hiro: I wasn't bullied.
Fujiwara: ......./Then, the "Black" rushed into your house, for God knows what reason.//Your house exploded because of this, and your parents died./But you were unharmed, save for a few minor bruises and burns... Why?
Hiro: No idea. It's a coincidence./I can't know. How would I?
Fujiwara: Afterwards, the "Black" and the "White" fight in Nakano./Where were you at the time?
Hiro: I was staying at my classmate Harumi-san's house, sleeping.
Fujiwara: .......

143
Fujiwara: Have you been in Niigata?
Hiro: !//I haven't./I don't know anybody there.
Fujiwara: The guy on the picture looks a lot like you, don't you think?*slip*
Fujiwara: The image is from the train station's home camera./The "Black" has appeared in Niigata for some reason.
Hiro: I don't know Niigita./What would I need to go there for?
Fujiwara: Later, he shows up in Saitama's Super Arena. At Hiiragi Manami's live.//You went to this live, didn't you?
Hiro: ...../Yeah.

146
Hiro: I'm a fan of Manami's. That's why I go to her concerts and the like./And I did see you and the superman facing each other...
Fujiwara: Speaking of which, I forgot something./The day Manami was in Kanda, signing autographs.//That time, the "Black" had showed up too./Did you go to there as well?
Hiro: !/Yes.
Fujiwara: Yeah. And lately, your girlfriend has been kidnapped and sequestrated./Your girlfriend.......

147
Fujiwara: By the time the police had taken care of her, the criminal had already sustained grievous injuries from somebody else.//Somebody else had gone in./Smashing through a thick concrete wall along the way./Who could it have been?//She didn't let even one word out about whether or not this person had something to do with her.*glare*
Hiro: ...../I don't know.
Fujiwara: The "Black" and you have way too many things in common, by the looks of things./No. Circumstances speak for themselves.
Hiro: !
Kaji: 'Scuse me... Fujiwara-san.*creak*

150
Fujiwara: What. You sure?!
Kaji: Yes!
Fujiwara: The superman has showed up?!
Hiro: ![

Justice 20: Junk Panic

151
Fujiwara: The superman has showed up? For real?!
Kaji: ...
Hiro: Superman...
Fujiwara: So. Is it the "Black"? Or the "White"?
Kaji: Well... You see...//The report says he's black...
Fujiwara: The "Black", then!
Kaji: Does that mean the boy is not the superman?
Fujiwara: No idea.
Hiro: (A superman? And it's not the white JUNK?/So...)

152-153
Hiro: (Just who is it?/Who's that guy?)*wooooo*

154
Kaji: What do we do with the boy?*slam*
Fujiwara: Let's keep him here some more.//Until we get confirmation that superman is the Black or whatever.
Kaji: Yes sir.
Fujiwara: I say we have him stay as long as the situation allows it.
Hiro: ......//What the heck...//am I doing.../here of all places.../Sigh...

155
Kaji: According to the eye-witnesses, a car and all of its contents have been crushed by a black superman.*wail*
Fujiwara: The car and its contents?//So what of whoever was inside?
Kaji: Dead, sir.//But there's more to it.
Fujiwara: More? What do you mean?
Kaji: On a road in Nakano, a man who was walking with a cigarette in hand has had his arm cut off./He's in a critical state.//On a riverbed in Tamagawa, he took the head of a man who was golfing there......./The man didn't survive. [tn: No shit, genius!]
Fujiwara: ....../Something doesn't feel right...
Kaji: Yes?
Fujiwara: I think... he might not be the “Black”.

156
Fujiwara: Killing someone in particular is something he's never done up to this point./Maybe it's just a natural turn of events, but...//There might be a third superman out there....../Even if I don't like the idea...//Hm?
Kaji: What is it?
Fujiwara: The ad-balloon. You don't see that every day. But its flying at a fairly low altitude... if you ask me./It's really huge... But I can't see anything that looks like an advertisement....
Kaji: Maybe the cables were cut off and it flew away?
Fujiwara: Sure, why not?

157
Cop: Sorry. We can't let you go home just yet.*creak*
Hiro: !
Cop: Do you want to eat something?*slam*
Hiro: Uh... Yeah.//Anything will do.
Cop: Uh-huh...
Hiro: Errr.... Can I ask you one question?
Cop: What is it?
Hiro: What time is it?
Cop: ......

158
Forensics: This is by no means something a human being could do.
On the curb: No trespassing.
Fujiwara: So it's gotta be a superman, right?//What of the car?
Forensics: It's already been brought to the police office.....
Fujiwara: What about Hotoke-san?
Forensics: Horrible. He didn't even look human. More like some shapeless mass.
Kaji: Put in chronological order, that's Nakano, here, and Tamagawa.
Fujiwara: No point in inspecting them, I take it...//All on the same day? Today?
Kaji: On the same day, today... Yes sir.
Fujiwara: We went at the boy's place at 11 a.m.../Guess that gives him an alibi...
Kaji: That's pretty much it...
Fujiwara: ......

159
Kaji: So what do we do with our young friend?
Fujiwara: ....//He gets to walk, for today.../But don't you lay your eyes off him! Everything hasn't been clarified just yet.
Kaji: Yes sir!*clank*
Fujiwara: (Sigh...)//I've really lost my touch./On this case, that is...*vvrrrrr*

160
Passers by: Uh./What's this?//A frikkin' huge panda./Maybe an ad for some zoo?
*zzzzzzzz*

161
Passers by: Wai... Hey there. It's gotten down quite a bit./This can't be good, can it?
*wawwwww* *zzzzzz*
Girl: Shouldn't we be running for it?
Blond guy: No, no. Let's take a picture of it.

Lisa: Yes!/Yes, I'm on the rooftop. Moving in right away. Yeah.
Shanlan?: Be careful.
Lisa: Even in a situation like this, the boy hasn't come.*woooo*
Lisa: Once again, he's using the costume's power only for his own benefit.//Well, let's get going, shall we?

172
*GWWOOOOO*
Lisa: (For all that power I have, I feel like I'm powerless.../Especially when it comes to saving people......//I wish I had enough power to save all those people faster.//I know just how strong this power makes me.../But.)

173
Lisa: I still wish I had the power to save people!/Maybe this is a way to preserve me.....
*woooooo* *tow* *tow* *tow*
Heli: Great fire spotted in the environs of Kabuki street in Shinjuku and the East entrance!!/There are also lots of people lying down on the streets, and smoke from cars that have crashed into one another.

174
Woman!Announcer: Early in the morning today, an ad-balloon exploded in Shinjuku's Kabuki street, Tokyo. The gas it liberated caused a great deal of damage in the area./We don't know what kind of gas it was just yet, but its effects have extended to trucks, buildings and gas stations, creating a large fire.//
Panel: Red Board. *clack* *clack* *clack* (typing)
Woman!Announcer: Balloons similar to the one that exploded in Shinjuku have been spotted in Roppongi, Ikebukuro and Shibuya./The police is currently evacuating the nearby areas. Warnings have been issued to those who live in the vicinity, that they should remain calm and not give in to panic.
Panel: Have you seen the catastrophe in Shinjuku?*clack* clack* *clack*
Woman!Announcer: It's very likely the balloon was rigged with explosive charges./Judging from the pictures, the ballons are currently staying put. In opposition with the wind's direction. As long as they are not controlled by someone...

175
Panel: This is only a bit of advice. We have disposed three more balloons like that one. Don't run away. Don't run away from us.
Announcer: The three balloons that have been spotted should be taken away as soon as possible./But whoever rigged them might cause another disastrous explosion.
Panel: This is full-fledged terrorism. Merely something our ideology is based upon. If we see spot anyone trying to be smart, we'll detonate the bombs. Anyone caught into the blast will be sent to Hell.
Announcer: Ahem... An information bulletin has just arrived. According to it, someone who's likely to be the culprit has left an Internet entry. Although we don't really know whether this entry really comes from the criminal.
Panel: There is only one way to salvation.

176
*zah*
Hiro: Talk about a change. I even get to go home in a taxi.//Uh?//What's that?/Looks like the Shinjuku area.//Maybe something happened.*gwwoooo*
Hiro: Something must have happened.//Well, I've had enough for today. I'm tired.*clank*
Hiro: Phewww.*slam*

177
Hiro: Dang it. A whole day with the cops.../Not exactly what I'd call an ordinary experience. Bah./Putting on a JUNK suit and doing all kinds of stuff ain't normal either./Aaaah.//Time to sleep. Off to bed.
Ayano: Welcome home. [tn: More Japanese etiquette. When you leave home, you say "Itte kimasu"="I'm off", or any variant thereof. When you're back, you're supposed to say "Tadaima"=I'm home". The polite answers to these are respectively "Itte rasshai"="Have a nice day" and "Okaeri"="Welcome home".]
Hiro: Eh?
Ayano: I went ahead and climbed upstairs.

178
Ayano: Yuuki Hiro-kun.

179
*sbam*
Gramps: Uh...
Lisa: Thank God he's still breathing.
*shift*
Lisa: I only have 15 minutes left. Maybe I can save a few more people within that time......
Suzuki: Ohhhhh. This is wonderful. Just as I thought, you're a super-human who fights for justice, White.*clap* *clap* *clap*
Lisa: !

180-181
Suzuki: Let me applaud you for using this power to do the right thing.*clap* *clap* *clap*
Lisa: !

182
Lisa: ...../You're a JUNK too?
Suzuki: That I am./Well, that's pretty much the logical conclusion.//Today, I've come to learn from my senpai [tn: senior student/co-worker].
Lisa: Here. I leave him to you./Now if you'll excuse me.//Well now... Shall we start the lesson? Freshman-san?*shift*
Suzuki: There are still people suffering out there. You're okay with that?
Lisa: ......

183
Lisa: Alright. Just sit there so you can watch and learn, then.
Suzuki: Watch and learn.//I have one question. Do you have some kind of conviction you put on this suit for?
Lisa: Conviction...?/If you're talking about personal opinions, I don't use this suit for evil purposes.
Suzuki: I see./For my part, I just crush wrongdoers to a pulp.

184
Hiro: Wh... Who are you?
Ayano: I'm the counselor who's picking up where Tsujidou left off. Hoshi Ayano. Nice to meet you.
Hiro: Hoshi... -san?
Ayano: Come on. You'd left the door open!//Nevermind. I'll tell you everything in detail./Come over here. There's too much noise outside.

185
Hiro: Ye... Yeah.*creak*
Ayano: You've been taken away by the police, so that explains it.
Hiro: How do you know? [tn: Put some thought into it, genius! What kind of people would give you a superpowered suit for free and just leave it at that?]
Ayano: I know everything about you.//But you've spent a lot more time with the cops than I expected.
Hiro: Yeaaaah.
Ayano: .......//What's going on? Weren't you going to bed?
Hiro: Ah... Well no. I'm just a bit tired...
Ayano: Humph...

186-187
Ayano: Let me sleep with you, then.
Hiro: Ee... Eeeh?

188
Hiro: Wahh.*thud*
Ayano: Huhuhuhu.//Nothing prevents us from talking while in bed./I'll even tell you about what Tsujidou held back from you.
Hiro: Eh?
Ayano: What and who we are exactly.
Hiro: Uh?[
